First shipment of Changan models arrives in South Africa - here's what to expect

South Africans will soon have yet another car brand to consider when shopping for a new SUV, sedan, or bakkie, following the return of the Changan brand later this year.
The first batch of vehicles has arrived in South Africa, with the new Hunter bakkie, Alsvin sedan, and Deepal S07 electric crossover recently spotted on a carrier.
Examples of the new CS75 compact SUV are also on the water, Changan representatives have confirmed, with the first units set to arrive in time for the brand's official launch, planned for the fourth quarter of 2025.
Changan, which previously sold the Chana Star compact bakkie and Benni hatchback, will have a more upmarket focus upon re-entry into our market. The brand will now be distributed by Jameel Motors, which has 70 years of experience as an independent international automotive distributor.

This is the bakkie that forms the basis of the Peugeot Landtrek, which is already on sale in South Africa.
The two share a close resemblance, but the Changan Hunter has distinct frontal styling and will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, according to a local spokesperson.
Changan CS75 Pro: Also set for local introduction is the CS75 Pro midsize SUV, which is powered by a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine that delivers 135kW. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, according to the local website.

The 4.7-metre-long SUV is similar in size to the Nissan X-Trail, and in overseas markets it is offered in five-seat and seven-seat guises.
South African prices and specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.
Changan Alsvin: The importer will tackle the lower-end sedan market too, with its Alsvin. The four-door contender will be powered by a normally aspirated 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that delivers 78kW and 145Nm.

The sleek-looking crossover offers a claimed range of 560km between charges, and its electric motor produces 160kW and 320Nm, suggesting it could be priced at the lower end of the SUV scale.
Its cabin features 'premium' soft-touch materials, according to the brand, while the wrap-around centre console was inspired by the yachts of the Mediterranean. The vehicle also comes standard with a panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade.

'Seeing our first Changan Alsvin, Hunter 4x4 and Deepal S07 units arrive on South African soil is a proud moment - the beginning of a new chapter,' said Jameel Motors SA country manager Marinus Venter.

EXCLUSIVE: Changan to launch more SUVs and range extender EVs in 2026

Image: Supplied Changan Automobile is returning to South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2025 with local distributor Jameel Motors set to offer five distinct models that cover the bakkie, medium SUV, compact sedan and EV sectors - click here to learn more about the initial line-up. That range is set to expand during the course of 2026 with additional Changan SUV models and another Deepal-branded electric vehicle (EV), Jameel Motors SA country manager Marinus Venter told IOL. On the SUV front, the midsize CS75 Pro that launches in late 2025, will be joined by a smaller SUV called the CS655. This model is about 30cm shorter than its sibling and it is set to compete with the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. Later in 2026, another new model called the CS35 will enter the hotly contested compact SUV space. Both will be available in 'range extender' (RE-EV) format, featuring petrol engines that act as generators to extend the driving range. Venter believes this is the perfect solution for South African motorists, given the lack of EV-friendly infrastructure in the country. Venter also revealed that an RE-EV version of the Hunter one-tonne bakkie will form part of the initial range that launches in late 2025. The REEV looks bolder than the regular Hunter models. Image: Supplied The RE-EV boasts unique styling that sets it apart from the regular Hunter bakkies. Overseas, it's available in single motor (128kW) and dual-motor (196kW) variations. While the e-motors solely power the wheels, a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine powers the 31 kWh battery once its plug-in charge has been depleted. The vehicle can cover up to 180km on electric power alone, Changan claims. Changan not chasing volume In a recent interview, CEO Marinus Venter told IOL that the local importer, Jameel Motors, is not chasing huge sales volumes, at least not initially. 'One thing we specifically want to do is build the brand, so we've not given ourselves any specific volume targets in the first three years,' Venter told IOL. Although the brand aims to sell around 500 units per month within two years, the main objective is to get the right products into the right segments, build the brand and get all the important elements set up correctly. Changan is a major player on the Chinese market, ranking third in terms of domestic sales in early 2025, behind BYD and Geely. The importer will follow a similar strategy with its dealer footprint, which is set to kick off with no more than 25 dealers at launch. This will be expanded as volume grows. Jameel Motors will use established organisations to handle its vehicle and parts logistics, Venter revealed. 'We're not going to try and reinvent the wheel or start everything from scratch and have those teething problems. We are locking into something that's already working to ensure that whatever we supply our dealers and our customers is something that they are used to from legacy brands.' The brand's fully stocked parts warehouses will be located in Gauteng, but nationwide deliveries will take place on a daily basis, Venter said. Interestingly, the Peugeot Landtrek is based on the Changan Hunter bakkie, which Stellantis plans to build in South Africa. However, Venter said it was unlikely that they would source bakkies from the local Stellantis operation as future versions of the Hunter and Landtrek would see a design divergence. Venter believes Changan's new styling direction will be particularly suited to South African tastes, as it's contemporary but not too futuristic. 'I think it will be an easy progression from a legacy brand into one of our vehicles, as opposed to jumping completely to something that is too futuristic.' Changan and Deepal's first trio of models arrive in South Africa
Latest Chinese brand will debut an extensive product line-up in early 2026. The first of Changan and Deepal's model destined for South Africa have arrived. Image: Supplied Its return to South Africa announced back in March, along with sister brand Deepal, the first trio of Changan products have arrived in readiness for both brands' formal market launch in the fourth quarter of the year. Depicted on a car carrier reportedly in Kempton Park, the batch involved the Alsvin sedan, the K50 Hunter bakkie and the all-electric Deepal S07, with the only missing variant being the CS75 Pro that will complete the foray before a mass product roll-out across both marques in early 2026. What's coming While price and specification details remain unconfirmed, a company representative told The Citizen that the models comprised the Alsvin being fitted with the five-speed dual-clutch gearbox and the normally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol that produces 77kW/145Nm in other export markets. More interestingly, the K50 Hunter makes do with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, but unlike its diesel-powered sibling, the Peugeot Landtrek, with the inclusion of two electric motors and what is believed to be a 31.1-kWh battery pack. Erroneously previously reported as being a diesel engine, the combustion unit produces 135kW/390Nm, but is only used to charge battery as the main propulsion methods are the two electric modules, the one at the front developing 70kW/150Nm and the one at the rear 130kW/320Nm. ALSO READ: Changan's 'firsts for South Africa' pair of bakkies could be these A setup that makes the K50 Hunter the first range-extending electric vehicle or REEV to be sold in South Africa, the entire system develops 200kW/470Nm, which Changan and Deepal's Saudi Arabian importer, Jameel Motors, says results in an all-electric range of 131 km and a combined of 900 km. Finally, the Deepsal S07 makes uses of an 80-kWh battery pack that drives a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Likely to be similar to Australia where sales started earlier this year, the S07 outputs 160kW/320Nm, enough for a range of 475 km and 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Supporting DC charging up to 92 kW means the S07 will require a waiting time of 35 minutes from 30-80%.
