Tonys 2025 Live Updates: ‘Buena Vista Social Club' Wins 3 Early Awards

New York Times08-06-2025
Harvey Fierstein has won four Tony Awards in his career, including honors for both writing and acting. On Sunday he will add a fifth to the list, with an award for lifetime achievement.
Here's what to know about Fierstein's notable performances and writing — and that voice — as he accepts the award.
It all started with 'Torch Song Trilogy.'
'Torch Song Trilogy,' a four-hour portrait of a drag performer written by and starring Fierstein, opened on Broadway in 1982. It was a landmark production for a generation of gay men: 'A play in which the gay character was smart, funny and fully alive? A revelation,' Stuart Emmrich would write in The Times decades later.
Fierstein won two Tonys with the show, one for best play and one for his performance. 'Torch Song' was revived on Broadway in 2018, this time with Michael Urie in the lead role of Arnold. (A character sometimes known as, naturally, Virginia Ham.)
'Originally, the gay men came in disguise,' Fierstein said about the play's audience earlier this year, in an interview with New York magazine. 'When we did it again, they came to the theater owning the show.'
He's made a career confronting gender norms onstage.
After 'Torch Song' came 'La Cage aux Folles' in 1983, with a Tony-winning book by Fierstein and music by Jerry Herman. It was the first Broadway musical, The Times noted then, to put a gay relationship at the forefront — here, between a drag nightclub's impresario and its star. Fierstein has also written the books for 'Newsies' (2012) and 'Kinky Boots' (2013), and revised the book of 'Funny Girl' for its 2022 revival.
Fierstein's breakthrough as a musical performer came in 2002, with 'Hairspray.' He played the larger-than-life Edna Turnblad, a 1960s housewife whose peppy daughter helps her come fabulously into her own. Fierstein won a Tony for the role, and in 2016 reprised his performance in a live, televised rendition of the show.
'Edna is not just a cross-dressing sight gag,' Ben Brantley wrote in his 2002 review. 'She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.'
And about that voice.
Here are just a few of the ways The Times has characterized Fierstein's distinctive timbre over the years: 'throaty,' compared to a 'frog' or 'foghorn,' 'all the old 'gravel' clichés don't come close,' and 'sounding as he does, he should be driving a cab.'
In an interview around his 2022 memoir, 'I Was Better Last Night,' Fierstein had a simple explanation.
'My father had the same voice,' Fierstein said. 'It's enlarged secondary vocal cords. It's the most boring answer.'

Ted Cruz Is Weirdly Invested In The Backlash To Sydney Sweeney's Jeans Ad

Add Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) to the chorus of conservatives who are defending Sydney Sweeney amid heated backlash to her American Eagle campaign. On Tuesday, the Texas Republican offered a snide, politically charged take on the controversy on X, formerly Twitter. 'Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women,' Cruz wrote alongside a New York Post article about the campaign. 'I'm sure that will poll well...' He doubled down on his remarks while appearing on Fox News in a segment that aired later on Tuesday, using the Sweeney furor as an example of 'how extreme' he feels the Democratic Party has become. 'This week the Democrats have decided, with the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad, that they hate beautiful women,' he said. 'That's just a little nuts for them to say, 'I'm sorry, we're the Democrats. Beautiful women are no longer acceptable in our society.'' Sweeney, best known for her portrayal of Cassandra 'Cassie' Howard on HBO's 'Euphoria,' has faced a barrage of criticism this week following the release of her American Eagle ads, which play off the words 'genes' and 'jeans.' 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,' the actor explains in one of the ads. 'My jeans are blue.' A narrator then reads the tagline: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Though the ad seems to be an intended as an homage to Brooke Shields' 1980 Calvin Klein campaign ― also controversial for its time ― some fans on social media felt it contained white supremacist undertones. Watch one of Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ads below. 'Having Sydney Sweeney talk about her genes/jeans is already a bad look for American Eagle, but calling her genes/jeans 'blue' takes it even further, hinting at 'blue blood,' a term historically tied to whiteness and aristocratic lineage,' the Instagram account Style Analytics wrote. 'It's a nod to eugenics, aligning the brand with the growing conservative/right-wing/white supremacy movement ... This is just one way brands have recently been attempting to plaicate to conservatives.' Many echoed those sentiments, including one TikTok user who called the ad 'what happens when you have a bunch of white folk who all look and think the same.' Added another on X: 'This is so Hitler like what.' Neither Sweeney nor American Eagle have yet to respond to the criticism over the campaign. Cruz, however, is among a growing number of conservatives, including White House Communications Director Steven Cheung and former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, in defending the ads. Related... Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are reportedly dating. Why everyone seems to be rooting for romance between 'The Naked Gun' costars.

The internet is gushing over the actors' reported relationship. Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are making headlines for a very wholesome reason: They're reportedly dating. While promoting their upcoming comedy, The Naked Gun, out Friday, Anderson and Neeson have been seen cozying up to one another on the red carpet and singing each other's praises in interviews with the press. "I had never met Pamela before," Neeson said on Today on Tuesday. "We met on set, and we discovered we had a lovely, budding chemistry — as two actors. And it was like, 'Oh, this is nice. Let's not mold this, let's just let it breathe.' And that's what we did." Anderson was equally effusive in an interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. "I think I have a friend forever in Liam,' she said. 'We definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving. He's a good guy." Then on Tuesday, People exclusively reported that the costars are dating, citing a source close to the movie who said, "It's a budding romance in the early stages. It's clear they're smitten with each other." The news seemed to generate a nearly unanimous reaction from the internet: Anderson and Neeson are absolutely a couple worth rooting for. 'Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson are officially dating & I love them,' one fan wrote on X. Writer Caitlin Flanagan added, 'Pamela Anderson can keep going until she's 103 and she'll always have men who want to be with her. For every gormless male who has made clear his disdain for her make-up free face — you just don't get it.' Anderson and Neeson have each dealt with their share of personal hardships. That both seem to have found love again has many fans celebrating their reported relationship. For Anderson in particular, the budding romance is a bonus for fans who are happy to see the 58-year-old finally being taken seriously as an actress after many years of being the subject of sexualization and scandal. Early reviews of The Naked Gun have praised Anderson's comedic performance, with the San Francisco Chronicle calling her 'a skilled and self-aware comedienne' and the Hollywood Reporter commending her 'display of impeccable comedic timing.' Wrote one X user, 'Anyone else feel elated that Pamela Anderson, who for decades was never taken seriously for her acting, bravery, intelligence, generosity, kind nature, love of animals, and the tabloids relentless harassment. She is getting this second career and proving everyone wrong.' Anderson's career has been rife with intense objectification by the media. The actress, who got her start in Hollywood gracing Playboy centerfolds and patrolling Los Angeles beaches on Baywatch, often fielded questions that pertained exclusively to her body rather than her talent. 'Because I'd done Playboy, because I was on Baywatch, I wasn't really reaching my full potential as an artist or an actress,' Anderson told Bustle in 2023. 'People were asking me specific things about my breasts, about sex, sexual stories. People would just come up to me in a restaurant and say, 'Tell me a sex story, Pamela.'' Anderson became one half of a wildly infamous tabloid couple when she married rocker Tommy Lee, with whom she shares two sons, in 1995. It was during their whirlwind romance that Anderson became an unwilling star of a stolen sex tape, which led to even more prurient media coverage. Their relationship ended in 1998, amid reports of abuse. Neeson, meanwhile, was married to actress Natasha Richardson, with whom he shares sons Micheàl and Daniel, from 1994 until her death in 2009. Richardson suffered a traumatic brain injury during a skiing accident in Montreal. The actor, now 73, immediately returned to work following Richardson's death, because he didn't want his sons to see him 'wallow in sadness or depression.' The Taken star, during a 2024 interview with People, said he no longer had an interest in dating. 'I'm past all that,' he told the outlet. Anderson wasn't actively seeking a relationship either. When asked by Bustle in 2023 whether she'd consider getting married again, The Last Showgirl star said 'maybe,' while outlining the ideal way she'd like to meet someone. 'I want to be the one who catches someone's glance across the way on the subway, or my dog's leashes get tangled up with someone in Central Park, and we fall in love,' she said. 'That's the kind of love I like. I like this really romantic, meant-to-be stuff. That's what will happen — or not. If it doesn't, it's okay, too.' Where Neeson and Anderson's relationship goes from here remains to be seen, though fans are hopeful that theirs will be a forever kind of love. 'Y'all really don't understand, like I love this for the both of them,' one TikTok user said in a recent video. 'To see that these two were brought together on the set of their new movie, The Naked Gun, is just … there's life after love, after heartbreak, after hardship. … It's just something so refreshing about seeing people their age still finding love, still being so deeply in love, still being all giddy and blushing when talking about one another.' My Current Fashion Inspiration? A Haunted Doll

I've never really understood the urge some adults have to dress like their childhood dolls. Frilly Peter Pan collars and lace trim just don't do it for me; and even when I was well within the age bracket to dress like I was heading to my First Communion, I didn't want to. Recently, though, I've noticed a shift. Over the past couple of months, I've been itching to incorporate into my wardrobe the exact details that once repelled me. But instead of dressing like a pristinely kept Madame Alexander, I'm taking inspiration from haunted-looking thrift store dolls. You know the ones: eyes glassy and vaguely menacing, their dresses yellowed and tattered, worn down by time. The imperfect, weathered fashions sit in opposition to their purpose as collectibles, meant to be preserved. Chloé spring 2025 Photo: Carlo Scarpato / I'm not the only one bewitched by their freaky charm: haunted doll fashions have been ever-present in recent seasons. (Lest we forget the bloomer shorts craze that began a couple of years ago.) Chemena Kamali's Chloé sent tiers of lace and billowing pantaloons down the runway for spring 2025, and Seàn McGirr's McQueen offered operatic collars and shredded hems that same season. Here in New York, Zoe Gustavia Anna Whelan's deconstructed styles remind me of a discarded doll left to the elements, while Colleen Allen's Victorian silhouettes mimic old underpinnings. The look has even hit the mass market: Free People sells a pair of lace-trimmed bloomer pants that serve as a budget-friendly alternative to luxury offerings. Jilted at the altar, Charles Dickens imagines her spending the rest of her life wearing her wedding dress to shreds, her banquet left untouched on the table, covered in cobwebs. Yet, I can't help but find that kind of fabulous. Helena Bonham Carter's interpretation of the role for the 2012 film saw Miss Havisham swallowed up by a voluminous wedding gown, its skirt of swirling organza, and its bell sleeves bedraggled. Clothes hold so much emotional power and reflect how we want to be seen in the world. Dressing in clothes that are feminine, yet weathered, feels like wearing your heart on your sleeve. It's a nice reminder that not everything needs to be polished and perfect all of the time to still be beautiful and worth wearing. So, while I was never one to don matching outfits with my American Girl Doll, now as an adult, I'll be looking to hanted dolls for style inspiration.
