Focus on farmers prosperity, UP minister urges agri scientists

Varanasi: Union minister of state for agriculture and farmers' welfare Ramnath Thakur concluded his two-day visit to Varanasi on Thursday as part of the ongoing Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign to promote sustainable agricultural practices and advanced technologies.
During the concluding function held at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kallipur, the minister urged agricultural scientists and officials to focus on farmer prosperity by reducing farming costs and working towards the goal of doubling farmers' income. He emphasized the need for communicating the latest agricultural innovations to farmers in a language they understand — directly in their fields.
Addressing a gathering of farmers, the minister highlighted that sowing rice during the Rohini Nakshatra is considered auspicious and leads to better crop yields due to favorable climatic conditions.
The campaign witnessed active participation from farmers across the region. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi, directed officials to act firmly against the use of adulterated seeds and chemicals. He also stressed promoting diversified farming, including fruits, vegetables, pulses, oilseeds, animal husbandry, and fisheries.
Colonel Bijendra Singh, Vice Chancellor of Acharya Narendra Dev University of Agriculture and Technology, Ayodhya, highlighted that Uttar Pradesh's agricultural productivity lags behind states like Punjab.

He advised farmers to adopt practices such as timely sowing, field leveling, correct seed rates, and incorporating green manure crops like dhaincha and sunhemp to restore organic matter in soil. Water-saving techniques like sprinkler and drip irrigation and mulching were also recommended.
Additionally, beekeeping was encouraged to boost crop yields by 15–20%.
As part of the visit, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute – South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC), organized field visits to demonstrate Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technology and other climate-smart agricultural innovations.
The minister visited the ISARC exhibition stalls, where he was briefed on climate-resilient rice varieties, rice-based nutritional products, and farmer-friendly technologies tailored for small landholders.He appreciated ISARC's efforts in offering scalable and eco-friendly farming solutions suitable for regional conditions.

The Patel family, who own the Krishna Riverside Resort in Vasad, were known for their warmth, hospitality, and being a tightly knit household. Living together on High School Road, their home was always bustling with relatives, guests and laughter. Now it stands eerily quiet. For Parth, the tragedy is a cruel blow upon another. "Just last year, I lost my father, Arun Patel, to a heart attack. Now I've lost my mother, uncle and aunt. In one year, I've been left almost alone," he said. Now, only he, his wife, his daughter and cousin sister remain from what was once a vibrant family unit. The pain has been compounded by the wait to identify the deceased. "We're waiting for my 'foi' (paternal aunt) to arrive from the US — only her DNA sample can confirm my uncle's identity. She's on her way," said Parth. The loss is not limited to the family. The Patels were well-respected in Vasad — a town known for its toor dal and defined by its sense of community. "Rajnikant wasn't just a neighbour, he was a dear friend. His death is a deeply personal loss," said Anand MP Mitesh Patel, who, along with Kheda MP Devusinh Chauhan, visited the grieving family on Friday. Effluent leak fear as tank tilts at Shristhal
Canacona: A 32-year-old tank storing molasses effluent of a company has become a health hazard to the residents of Shristhal. The company stopped production more than a decade ago. Filth has started oozing out of the tank now, making the locals fear that the tank is on the verge of breaking up and spreading the effluent all over the village. On Thursday, the tank was inspected by the deputy collector of Canacona, and pollution control board and PWD officials. Local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar was at hand as well. The conclusion after the inspection was that the tank, which is tilting slightly to one side, should be dismantled. The PWD was asked to give a stability report of the tank. The Canacona fire and emergency services were included in a discussion on whether the effluent could be some explosive. However, that possibility was ruled out by the new lease owners of the IDC plot, NTS Pvt Ltd. Tawadkar has asked the PWD to ascertain the stability of the tank and remove its contents in a safe manner. Reunion After 15 Years, Then Disaster: Couple, 2 Children Killed In Crash
The brother remembers it as a perfect celebration. All four siblings had gathered in Ahmedabad with their families to celebrate Eid al-Adha with their mother and it was a reunion that had been awaited for 15 years. That was last Friday. Less than a week later, the family's world came crashing around them. 37-year-old Javed, his wife Maryam, their five-year-old son and four-year-old daughter were among the 242 people aboard Air India flight AI 171, which crashed into a building in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Javed's mother, who is a heart patient and was slated to undergo a surgery soon, has still not been told that she has lost not just her son, but her daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren. Speaking to NDTV on Friday at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where samples are being collected to carry out DNA tests to identify the victims, Javed's brother, Imtiaz, said the family is devastated. "He was my brother. He had come to Ahmedabad to celebrate a happy moment. Now we have lost four family members. Who is responsible for this? Over 240 people have died. Will we keep losing people from our families... The plane had just taken off and crashed in a few seconds, how can this happen?" he asked. Javed, Imtiaz said, had gone to the UK to study 11 years ago, met Maryam there and eventually became a British citizen. "Javed had come here to celebrate Eid with our mother. She has stents in her heart and another was supposed to be inserted in two weeks. We are four brothers and sisters and have not gathered together for 15 years. Sometimes two of us would meet, sometimes three. This time, all of us got together and met our mother. Everything was perfect, just perfect," he said in Hindi. Asked whether their mother had been informed about the deaths, Imtiaz's brother said, "She hasn't been told yet. She has heart issues. We have told her that an investigation is on, she has probably been told they have been admitted to a hospital." "There's a pall of gloom over the family. They had two small children with them. I am sure you can understand..." he trailed off. Wait For Body Imtiaz said he had given his blood sample to identify Javed's body on Thursday night. "I have been searching every hospital, hoping some mistake had been made with the names and they are there. We are being told the bodies have been charred beyond recognition, which I am not being able to accept. Only once the DNA report comes will we know... We are being told we will be given the report by Sunday, I wonder how they will do that for so many people by then," he said. Of the 242 passengers on the plane, 241 were killed. At least 10 people also died at the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar, where the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed.
