Afghan intelligence nabs 'TTP recruiters'
The General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) conducted operations in the Paktika and Khost provinces, arresting Mullah Sangin Group's commander, Hayatullah, alias Ghalchaki Tangiwal, along with two of his close associates, sources told The Express Tribune. GDA officials also dismantled the group's local office during the raids.
Sources said the suspects have been shifted to Kabul's Pul-e-Charkhi prison. Hayatullah is accused of being one of the main commanders responsible for recruiting Afghan nationals for the TTP and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Gandapur (TTG) faction.
The suspects were allegedly involved in plotting a terror attack aimed at disrupting the trilateral meeting between Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan in Kabul. They are also reported to have opposed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan's August 15 "independence day" commemorations marking the US and allied forces' exit from Afghanistan.
The arrests come amid renewed counterterrorism coordination between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with Islamabad repeatedly urging Kabul to act against TTP sanctuaries and facilitators operating on Afghan soil.
Islamabad has also claimed that the TTP has formed a nexus with other terrorist groups, particularly those operating in Balochistan, including the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its notorious Majeed Brigade. Pakistan's claim has been endorsed by the UN Security Council which confirmed the TTP-BLA/Majeed Brigade nexus in its latest report.

Pakistan calls for fighting terrorism ‘without double standards'
A senior Pakistani diplomat has called for addressing terrorism without 'double standards and political agenda' as he drew attention to the brutal oppression in Indian occupied Kashmir and Palestine, stressing: 'Occupation cannot be dressed up as counter-terrorism.' 'We must clearly distinguish between terrorism and the legitimate struggle of peoples against foreign occupation and for exercising their right to self-determination,' Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad told the UN Security Council on Wednesday. Speaking in a debate on 'Threats to international peace & security caused by terrorist acts', he also highlighted that Pakistan, which has been in the forefront of the fight against terrorism, was standing firm against ISIL/Daesh and its affiliates — the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade. These terrorist groups, the Pakistani envoy added, were actively collaborating in Afghanistan and the region, sharing resources, information and physical space to carry out attacks against Pakistan. Indeed, at the outset of the debate, Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism and Head of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov said, that ISIL-Da'esh in Afghanistan 'represents one of the most serious threats to Central Asia and beyond'. The group remains a 'volatile and complex' threat, with its affiliates showing resilience despite the deaths of key leaders, he said. In his remarks, the Pakistani envoy also underscored the need to address 'state terrorism.' 'The situations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the Occupied Palestinian Territories are the starkest examples where collective punishments against civilian populations, widespread grave violations of human rights, forced demographic changes and fabricated counter-terrorism narratives and unlawful actions are being deployed by the occupation forces to prolong and sustain the illegal occupations and undermine and deny the legitimate right to self-determination of the populations of these territories,' he added. Noting that the UN Secretary-General report describes the situation in Afghanistan as 'precarious', Ambassador Asim said, 'Indeed terrorism within and from Afghanistan is the single most potent threat to that country, to the region, and the world.' Pakistan named vice chair of UN Counter-Terrorism Committee For Pakistan, he said, the threat was grave and immediate from the TTP, which has nearly 6,000 fighters who operate from Afghan soil bordering the country. 'There is credible evidence of collaboration between the TTP and BLA and the Majeed Brigade, including sharing of terrorist training camps, that has targeted our strategic infrastructure, economic projects in Pakistan, and most tragically our people,' he pointed out. 'And our principal adversary in the region is active in sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan. It bankrolls and supports terrorist proxies, and carries out extra territorial assassinations that have in fact gone global,' Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said, without actually naming India. Asim also highlighted that India's blatant aggression against Pakistan on the night of May 6-7 this year, in violation of our sovereignty and international law, under the false pretext of counter-terrorism, deliberately and indiscriminately targeted civilian population and infrastructure, resulting in the martyrdom of 54 innocent Pakistani nationals, including 15 children, some of them infants, and 13 women. 'When state terrorism masquerades as counter-terrorism, international peace is often the first casualty,' the Pakistani envoy commented. 'This Council should not look away.' Terrorism today is not just on the battlefield; it is online, it is algorithm-driven, it is financed through digital shadows, he said, emphasizing, 'we must respond, with clarity and conviction and through a holistic approach.' Among the steps he listed was to prioritise addressing the root causes of terrorism; deal with state terrorism; bring in changes to the sanctions regimes to incorporate new and emerging threats and end the dangerous stigmatization of Islam and Muslims as terrorism is a global phenomenon and cannot and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group, and regulate new tools of terror, and strengthen cooperation – from INTERPOL to national law enforcement – to choke off the digital arteries of terrorist networks. He also wondered that there was no non-Muslim in the UNSC's terrorism list, saying: 'It is not understandable, and is indeed unacceptable, that every name on the Security Council's terrorism lists is Muslim, while terrorists and violent extremists elsewhere escape scrutiny. There is no non-Muslim in the lists. This must change.' 'We can defeat terrorism by fighting it together and fighting it justly,' Ambassador Asim maintained.

PM Shehbaz reaches out to political leaders; assures support to handle flood situation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reached out to the leaders of different political parties and assured them of the cooperation and support of the federal government and its institutions to handle the situation caused by the heavy monsoon rains and consequent floods. The prime minister telephoned Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by the torrential rains and urban flooding in southern Sindh, particularly Karachi. He offered full support from the federal government to assist the Sindh government in addressing the emergency situation. According to Aaj News, At least 19 people have died in rain-related incidents in the port city since Tuesday afternoon as torrential rains wreaked havoc in the highly densely populated megalopolis, causing deaths, plunging many parts of the city into darkness for over 24 hours, damaging road infrastructure and creating traffic congestion. Relentless torrential rains have paralysed Karachi, halting economic activity and causing an estimated Rs15 billion in losses for traders in just two days, Business Recorder reported. The deluge exposed the city's crumbling infrastructure, with flooded streets, overflowing sewers, and thick sludge deterring customers and preventing shops from reopening. The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts continued cloudy skies, intermittent rain, and thunderstorms for the next three days, signaling prolonged challenges for residents and businesses. The persistent adverse weather threatens to exacerbate the crisis, deepening the plight of the city's commercial sector. Prime Minister Shehbaz directed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik to stay in close coordination with the Sindh government, provide all possible assistance to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and ensure the early warnings to the people about potential risks. PM's relief fund for calamity-hit people set up The prime minister also spoke with Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman and Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Discussing with the Jamaat-e-Islami chief the damages caused by recent rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ongoing relief activities, PM Shehbaz appreciated Al-Khidmat Foundation's proactive role in rescue and relief operations. He also discussed with Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui the recent rains and flood situation in Sindh, as well as potential risks from expected rainfall, assuring full cooperation from NDMA and other federal institutions to address any emergency situation. Meanwhile, in response to the widespread devastation caused by recent monsoon floods across Pakistan, the federal government has established the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for floods, earthquakes and other calamities. In a partial revision to its earlier directive, the Finance Division has withdrawn the clause mandating Cabinet members to contribute one month's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for Flood, Earthquake and Other Calamities. PM Shehbaz reviews relief efforts for flood-affectees in Pakistan's northern areas The Finance Division has issued an official memorandum outlining mandatory salary contributions from senior government officials to bolster the fund. The catastrophic floods have led to significant loss of life, displacement of communities, and extensive damage to both public and private infrastructure. In light of the humanitarian crisis, the prime minister has directed immediate financial mobilisation from within the federal structure. According to the memorandum: Cabinet members will contribute one month's gross salary to the Relief Fund. However, later it was withdrawn. Federal Bureaucracy (BPS 19–22) will donate one day's gross salary. The deductions will be made from gross pay and allowances, prior to any other deductions. Importantly, these contributions will not be considered part of the employees' emoluments for income tax or house rent recovery calculations.

Seventy-six people died in the accident in Herat province's Guzara district on Tuesday night when the passenger bus hit a motorcycle and a truck transporting fuel, causing an explosive fire, officials and eyewitnesses said. Two of the three survivors later died of their injuries, officials said on Wednesday. "Two injured individuals from last night's incident succumbed to severe injuries, increasing the number of victims to 78," a statement by the provincial information department said, citing representatives of the military hospital that received victims. Seventeen children were among those killed, according to army spokesman Mujeebullah Ansar, though a provincial police source put the number at 19. Many of the bodies were "unidentifiable", said Mohammad Janan Moqadas, chief physician at the military hospital. "There was a lot of fire... There was a lot of screaming, but we couldn't even get within 50 metres (160 feet) to rescue anyone," 34-year-old eyewitness Akbar Tawakoli told AFP. "Only three people were saved from the bus. They were also on fire and their clothes were burnt." Clean-up teams worked to remove the torched shell of the bus and twisted wreckage of another vehicle on the roadside early on Wednesday, an AFP journalist saw. "I was very saddened that most of the passengers on the bus were children and women," another eyewitness, 25-year-old Abdullah, who like many Afghans only uses one last name, told AFP. The bus was carrying Afghans recently returned from Iran to the capital Kabul, Herat provincial government spokesman Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi told AFP.
