JOJO, Chull among new OTT platforms serving culturally rooted content to niche, regional audiences

Mint27-05-2025

Despite the abundance of streaming and short-video platforms in India – both foreign and domestic – media and entertainment companies continue with new launches focused on regional and user-generated content.
Along with new OTT players JOJO, a Gujarati platform, and Chull, which will focus on Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Bangla content, Dish TV has unveiled FLIQS, a digital content segment within its WATCHO app for professional creators.
While critics point to the challenges of monetisation for such targeted offerings, others said the appetite for regional languages and niches remains underserved by bigger companies.
'It (a new launch) only makes sense if the platform is solving something real. This is not about launching another OTT. The content space is cluttered, but it's also underserved, especially when it comes to language-first, culturally rooted ecosystems. That's the gap JOJO was built to fill," said Dhruvin Shah, founder and CEO of JOJO.

Shah added that the platform isn't trying to outspend or out-scale—it entered to serve a very specific audience that wasn't being heard properly.
'You can't win by doing what the global platforms are doing. You stand out by doing what they can't. In a landscape where scale often comes at the cost of specificity, we committed to going deeper, not broader," Shah said.
He acknowledged that discovery for such niche platforms is still a challenge, but rather than rely on algorithms to do the heavy lifting, the company has built its own momentum via word-of-mouth, diaspora engagement, and cultural moments.
Experts pointed out that the Indian content economy may appear saturated on the surface, but it's only now beginning to unlock its true potential—particularly beyond the metros. Sukhpreet Singh, chief revenue officer of Dish TV, said the next phase of growth in digital entertainment will be driven by deep regionalisation, hyper-niche storytelling, and a decentralised creator economy.
Cultural relevance
'New platforms make business sense precisely because they cater to these unmet and underserved demands. As an industry, we've moved from mass content to micro-communities. Audiences today don't just want choice—they want cultural relevance, linguistic intimacy, and content that reflects their own lives," Singh said.
While global OTT companies focus on scale, the new entrants have the advantage of agility, local insight, and community-led programming, he added.

There is a huge population in small towns and regional pockets that still does not feel truly seen or heard in mainstream content, agreed Deepak Joshi, CEO of Flickfusion Media Inc, USA, which owns Chull OTT.
'The economics make sense too — content production costs are lower in smaller cities, and mobile-first users are hungry for entertainment they can relate to. So rather than trying to compete with the giants, we are building something different—something deeply rooted in local culture," Joshi added.
Challenges ahead
Without doubt, there are challenges for new launches. Munish Vaid, vice-president of Primus Partners, a management consultancy firm, said in the initial days, monetisation was tough. Subscription revenue takes time to build because users want to first see consistent value.
Advertising, too, is tricky at the start because brands want scale and data. So, platforms often have to run on low margins or even without revenue for the first few quarters.
'Discovery of the content is the biggest challenge. With so much content available, users don't even get to know that a new platform exists," Vaid added.

Further, continuous inflow of content is critical as a key challenge is retaining consumers and keeping them entertained on a regular basis.
'Hence, a model of low-cost content creation and exclusive, rooted stories that are relatable to the target audience is very important," said Nitin Burman, group chief revenue officer of Balaji Telefilms Ltd. The company has just launched Kutingg, a new vertical video content segment created exclusively for on-the-go viewers.

'Sitaare Zameen Par': Aamir Khan defends theatres over OTT releases; says, 'I believe in my audience'

Bollywood actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan is standing firm on his belief in the power of cinema halls. His upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will be released in theatres in a few days, with no plans to drop it on any OTT platform anytime soon. In a chat with News18 Showsha, the actor opened up about why the film is strictly for cinemas and how he feels the OTT trend is hurting the theatre business. 'I don't know any business where you offer your product, and if someone doesn't buy it, you tell them—don't worry, I'll drop it at your house for free in eight weeks,' he said, speaking about how quickly films are being made available online. 'It doesn't make sense to me. That's the reason many films aren't doing well in theatres.' Theatres vs OTT: Aamir takes a strong stand Aamir believes that good films should be watched on the big screen and not on a phone or laptop at home. He said the trend of quick OTT releases is damaging theatre culture. According to him, this has created a 'famine and feast' situation — either a film becomes a big hit or it fails completely. 'I believe in theatres. For Aamir, the experience of watching a film in a cinema hall is special, and he wants to keep that feeling alive with 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. OTT can't fix a bad film, says Aamir When asked about his last film 'Laal Singh Chaddha', which received better reviews on OTT after a slow run in theatres, Aamir didn't agree with the idea that streaming can change people's minds, 'If someone doesn't enjoy a film in theatres, they won't suddenly like it at home. Your opinion of the film doesn't change just because of where you watch it.' He also mentioned that high ticket prices and expensive food in multiplexes can push audiences to wait for films to come online. Still, he's not letting that affect his creative decisions. What is 'Sitaare Zameen Par' all about? 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is a sports comedy drama directed by R. S. Prasanna. It is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. The film stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh and is described as a spiritual follow-up to Aamir's 2007 film 'Taare Zameen Par'. The film also marks the Hindi film debut of Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar — fresh faces Aamir is excited to introduce to the audience. Spirit of unity among Telugus paramount: CM

Hyderabad: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while affirming that the Telugu community held a unique position in the country, urged leaders from the Telugu states to jointly work with a spirit of unity and togetherness to take Telugu to number one position in the country's growth. He was addressing a gathering at the release of the Telugu version of Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography 'Prajala Kathe Naa Atmakatha' (The story of the people of Telangana is my autobiography) here on Sunday. Naidu recalled that Telangana was previously part of the Nizam State, while Andhra Pradesh was under the Madras Presidency. Initially, both regions were united as Andhra Pradesh. Eventually, they became two separate states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. However, he emphasized the importance of unity, stating that "Telugu jathi okkate" (Telugus are one) should always be our guiding principle. He noted that while political parties may have differing opinions and some leaders may have delivered effectively during their tenure, the spirit of unity among Telugus remained paramount. The country's future looks promising under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Just as the Jewish diaspora earned a name for itself in the world, "there is a need to take forward the Telugu people into a brighter future." For this, "we need to emulate the spirit of Bandaru Dattatreya," he observed. Striking a note of nostalgia at the event's venue, he recalled how efforts had been made to invite former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to inaugurate the HI-TEC City, adding Cyberabad district to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. However, while IT companies were housed in Cyberabad, "Silparamama and Silpakala Vedika were established to showcase the Telugu culture and traditions," he added. Naidu stated that Bandaru Dattatreya had endeared himself to everyone and exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman. The Chief Minister remarked that it took courage for a politician to declare that his story was the story of the people. This statement reflects a deep connection and bond with the community forged over decades of his life's journey. The Chief Minister stated that while Dattatreya might be associated with Hindutva, his true essence embodied the spirit of Bharatiya culture. He exemplified the unity in diversity that characterized our country. This quality had elevated him from an ordinary activist to a national-level leader. Reflecting on Dattatreya's contributions during the Emergency period and his dedicated service as an RSS pracharak during the Diviseema Cyclone, the Chief Minister acknowledged the numerous challenges he had faced throughout his journey. He brought the spirit of unity and diversity, launching the Alai Balai programme to bring leaders of all parties together and made him a friend of all without an enemy in the two Telugu states. His political life will be remembered as an ideal life, he noted. Naidu, recalling the foreward of PM Modi wrote to the book, said he held several positions in the party, MLA, MP, Union Minister, and governor of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. However, he remained an ordinary worker, he said. Naidu recalled that he had lost count of the letters Dattatreya had written to him when he was the chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh. He earned the rare opportunity to work with great personalities in the Sangh and Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani, M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh, and Narendra Modi. However, he remained leading an ordinary life. Further, he noted how Dattatreya worked for the development of Hyderabad. Besides Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K Laxman, Tripura Governor, and former BJP state chief Indrasena Reddy contributed to the development of Hyderabad He said that the autobiography of Dattatreya, detailing life experiences of working in the southern and northern India would be an inspiration, setting an example to the people and future generations.
