HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP)- The President and CEO of Gary Rome Hyundai gave back to the community by recognizing a high school student in Holyoke with a brand-new car.
Since 2010, Gary Rome has awarded a Holyoke high schooler an Academic Achievement Award for their good grades, attendance, and behavior.
'I'm literally shaking, I'm so excited,' said Chelsea Salas, a senior at Dean Technical High School.
Out of 150 finalists, 20 were chosen for the Gary Rome Academic Achievement Award. It's the only program in the region to offer a brand-new car to a deserving Holyoke high schooler.
Each of the finalists was a good student with a 3.0 or higher GPA and fewer than 6 absences throughout the school year.
In front of family, friends, school faculty, and staff, each student got in a line for a chance to pick a key that would start this red Hyundai Venue. A senior at Dean Technical became the lucky winner.
'We had to send an essay and write about what we felt like we deserved it and I wrote about being the youngest of four and growing up in a low-income household and didn't have anything. My parents work so hard, and I wanted to make them proud,' said Salas.
Salas didn't know she won until she opened her eyes. 'I was the first one to pick out of the bowl, and I picked lucky number 3,' said Salas.
4 years of good grades, consistent attendance, and strong characteristics paid off. The school's guidance counselor is happy to see that Salas won her very first car.
'This is probably one of the most exciting days of our entire year. Seeing all their hard work kind of come to this has just been beyond exciting,' said Teresa Beaulieu, Guidance Counselor at Dean Technical High School.
Right after she won the car, she graduated. This was an early present from Gary Rome Hyundai. Gary Rome said it's an award that is always remembered.
'This has made a difference in their lives, you know it's allowed them to get back and forth to college, allow them to take their parents to doctors' appointments, it's allowed them to make a difference,' said Gary Rome, President and CEO of Gary Rome Hyundai.
Rome is thinking of bringing alumni back to future events.

Semi overturns on Fresno highway carrying 40,000 pounds of food, CHP says

A semi trailer carrying food products overturned on a Fresno highway Wednesday afternoon. The single-vehicle collision happened at 2 p.m. at northbound Highway 99 and Clinton Avenue. The driver of the semi was pinned-in, but fire crews removed him from the truck. His injuries were listed to be minor, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP said the truck was carrying 40,000 pounds of food. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said it appears the driver attempted to take the Clinton exit with insufficient room. He attempted to steer back onto the highway, however, was unable to because of his speed. The semi entered the gore point between the offramp and the highway and drove onto a dirt berm by a 4-foot concrete wall. The semi drove onto the concrete wall for 500 feet until it caused it overturn. Traffic going north was backed up to Tuolumne in the downtown Fresno area, CHP said. The highway at Clinton will be shut down for at least two hours. Solve the daily Crossword

2026 Hyundai Venue Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Hyundai Venue is at least a half-foot shorter than any other subcompact SUV on the market. It also costs several thousand dollars less than most of its competitors, yet it doesn't feel cramped or cut-rate. The cabin design is simple and smart, with several places to store small items and an easy-to-use infotainment system that supports smartphone mirroring. The Venue's tidy dimensions and responsive steering are boons for those who regularly weave through city traffic but less than ideal for highway commuters, who will have to make constant corrections when the wind buffets this featherweight off course. They're also liable to curse the modestly powered four-cylinder during merging and passing attempts, as the Venue takes its sweet time getting up to speed. But that's often the price you pay for a good price. Expert Tip: For about the same money, a base Kia Soul gets you more space, power, and style than the Hyundai. What's New for 2026? The Limited trim is gone, leaving just the SE and SEL. The latter (now the lineup topper) gains some equipment: wireless device charging, heating for the front seats and side mirrors, and two-tone paint options. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Hyundai Venue is expected to start around $22,000 and go up to $24,000 depending on the trim and options. SE $22,000 (est) SEL $24,000 (est) 0 $10k $20k $30k $40k The SEL is worth the splurge. It improves on the base model with automatic climate control, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry, and blind-spot monitoring. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Engine: 121-hp four-cylinder 121-hp four-cylinder Transmission: continuously variable automatic (CVT) continuously variable automatic (CVT) Drivetrain: front-wheel drive Powered by a 121-hp four-cylinder engine, the Venue feels sufficiently motivated around town but has a complete lack of passing power on the highway. A CVT sends torque exclusively to the front wheels; all-wheel drive isn't an option. We find the Venue is best suited for short commutes across town rather than long highway trips. It feels agile in traffic, largely thanks to its tidy dimensions and reactive steering. On the highway, though, this subcompact SUV needs regular attention to stay in its lane. 0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 8.5 seconds In Comparison: With our test gear attached, a Venue took a leisurely 8.5 seconds to reach 60 mph. Still, it's quicker than the Nissan Kicks. View Photos Hyundai Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test : 31 mpg 31 mpg EPA City Rating : 29 mpg 29 mpg EPA Highway Rating: 32 mpg The EPA hasn't yet released fuel-economy information for the 2026 Hyundai Venue, but the ratings shouldn't change. The 2025 model earns estimates of 29 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are slightly worse than those of the Nissan Kicks, which has estimates of 31 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, the Venue saw 31 mpg—1 mpg short of its EPA highway rating. For more information about the Venue's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Venue has a roomy cabin. The design isn't flashy, but the interior is well assembled and fitted with sturdy switchgear and an attractive gauge cluster and infotainment system. Heated seats and single-zone automatic climate control are available in the SEL, but you won't find things like a heated steering wheel or head-up display in any Venue. Second Row: The back seat is spacious for a subcompact SUV but not necessarily for a person over six feet tall. Cargo Capacity: With the 60/40 split-folding rear seats in use, the Venue has 19 cubic feet of cargo room. That volume increases to 32 cubes when the back seat is folded flat. The interface has attractive menus that quickly responds to inputs, and there are useful volume and tuning knobs below the screen. A six-speaker audio system is standard on all trim levels. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Hyundai outfits every Venue with a few driver-assistance technologies, including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Adaptive cruise control is unavailable, though. Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights Optional Safety Features: blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert For information about the Venue's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Casa Italiana social club returns to Springfield, bringing Italian Feast back to city

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Reviving the Italian-American heritage in Springfield, dozens of people came together on Friday for the grand opening of the Italian social club Casa Italiana. Celebrating Italian-American heritage and spreading cheer and tradition, a ribbon-cutting took place for Casa Italiana. This social club was originally founded in 1897, the historic home known to many is recognized as the heart and soul of the local Italian community. Springfield Juneteenth Jubilee Committee hosts annual flag raising ceremony 'This is about family, faith, and food,' said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. 'And now to have this Casa Italiana back to the future, and there's a lot of tradition down here. I remember sweeping the streets at 3:00 a.m. after the feast and the fireworks.' 'They've got a nice group of positive people,' said Rico Daniele, member of the Sons & Daughters of Italy. 'We have 20 members now, we're trying to bring it back like the old days and bring people together.' The club also announced that in a month, the one and only Italian Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will return to the city of Springfield. This will mark the first time in 20 years that the feast will take place, bringing back the 40-foot grease pole competition and traditional food that locals won't want to miss. 'People might remember way back in the day when people went up the pole to get the prosciutto and salami to get that,' said Salvato Circosta, President of Casa Italiana. 'And we're excited to bring that back.' WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts.
