Internationally, Japanese shares surged on Friday after positive earnings reports and expectations that the US would remove overlapping tariffs on the country's goods, while shares were down in other Asian markets after a late retreat on Wall Street during the previous session. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 0.4% with Hong Kong's market leading declines, after US stocks ended the previous session with mild losses after nearing a one-week high. Meanwhile, Japanese stocks soared, with the Nikkei 225 up 2% and the Topix index hitting a fresh record, trading above 3,000 for the first time. US stock futures, the S&P 500 e-minis, were up 0.3%, while Nasdaq futures rose 0.4%, on track to extend gains into a third day. The rally for stocks comes 'against the backdrop of an emerging titanic dovish pivot at the Federal Reserve,' said Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG in Sydney. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would nominate Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran for the vacant seat at the Federal Reserve while the White House seeks a permanent addition to the central bank's governing board and continues its search for a new Fed chair. The market is also digesting a Bloomberg News report that Fed Governor Christopher Waller is the top candidate to replace Chair Jerome Powell, whose term ends on May 15, 2026. What to see when investing? There are various kinds of investments through which people make profits. The fundamental tip for ending up in profit is be patient and don't get carried away by sentiments, as explained by IGI Securities Assistant Manager Equity & Commodity Sales Inam Shakir. 'People end up in loss when they panic sell their shares,' said Inam, speaking to Business Recorder. Sharing an anecdote, he said two brothers, MBBS doctors by profession, invested millions of rupees and one made substantial gains while the other tanked badly. 'They invested in the stock market the same day in 2018 — one Rs4.6 million and the other Rs1.8 million. The one who invested Rs4.6 million suffered huge loss and was left with Rs0.15 million only, whereas the one who invested Rs1.8 million has accumulated gains more than Rs11 million over his principal investment amount,' he said. The difference between them, he said, was that one was doing day trading, like he tried to fish profits on a daily basis and suffered back to back losses and the other reaped benefit through dividends and long term investment. Explaining margin trading/ margin financing, Inam said it involves borrowing money from brokerage house, which mostly charges just the transaction fee for each share and sometimes charges interest too over the aggregate amount, for making investment on a confidence that the investor will get profit over it. This money is lent for one month and if the investor fails to make transaction within this time for whatever reason, he has to pay 25% over the borrowed money, he said.

GPT-5 launch promises PhD-level AI expertise
Listen to article OpenAI unveiled on Thursday its GPT-5 artificial intelligence model, the latest iteration of the technology behind ChatGPT, promising broader access and enhanced enterprise capabilities. GPT-5 will be made available to all 700 million ChatGPT users, OpenAI said, as it seeks to demonstrate significant leaps in performance that justify continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure. The release comes amid a surge in capital spending by the world's leading technology firms Alphabet, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, OpenAI's principal backer which together plan to invest nearly US$400 billion in AI data centres this fiscal year. 'We've built GPT-5 to feel like you can ask a legitimate expert, a PhD-level expert, anything,' OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman told reporters at a San Francisco briefing. He highlighted the model's prowess in software development 'software on demand' as well as its strong performance in writing, health-related queries and financial analysis. In demonstrations, GPT-5 generated complete, working programmes from plain-text prompts, a capability dubbed 'vibe coding'. Early reviewers praised its coding skills and proficiency in science and mathematics but noted that the upgrade from GPT-4 to GPT-5 seemed more incremental than previous generational jumps. Despite these improvements, Altman conceded that GPT-5 cannot yet learn autonomously, a milestone needed to match human adaptability. He noted that OpenAI's 'test-time compute' technology where the model applies extra processing power to tackle difficult questions will be accessible to the public for the first time, helping to address tasks that demand advanced reasoning. Industry economists warn that enterprise spending on AI remains tepid compared with strong consumer uptake of applications like ChatGPT. 'Consumer spending on AI just isn't going to be nearly enough to justify all the money being spent on data centres,' said Noah Smith, an economics writer. OpenAI is in preliminary talks to allow employees to liquidate holdings at a US$500 billion valuation, up from its current US$300 billion. Meanwhile, leading AI researchers command signing bonuses of up to US$100 million. Nearly three years after ChatGPT's debut ignited the generative AI boom, OpenAI's challenge remains sustaining transformative leaps in capability as it confronts a data-scarcity barrier and the technical complexity of training ever-larger models. 'Building more infrastructure globally is essential,' Altman said, underscoring the need for widespread, localised AI availability to fulfil the company's mission of benefiting all humanity.
