India Gaming Law Passed In LS: Promotion/Endorsement May Land You In Jail
The Lok Sabha has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, to effect a blanket and hard-hitting crackdown on online real money-based games in India. The government said it aims to curb addiction, money laundering, and financial fraud through such games in the country.
The bill still needs to be passed by the Rajya Sabha, but if it goes as smoothly as in the lower house — via a voice note as the opposition protested on another subject — there could be wide-ranging impacts on individuals and organisations involved in the gaming ecosystem.
Before we discuss the punishments mentioned in the draft, it needs to be noted that amid this whip on the online gaming platforms, the centre said it's trying to promote and develop e-sports in the country, which should protect non-gambling games. An authority is being set up to oversee e-sports, educational games, social games, and real money gaming, and all organisations will fall under its regulations.
The bill outlaws all online betting and gambling activities — from online fantasy sports like Dream11 and My11Circle to online gambling like Poker, Rummy and other Card games and online lotteries, irrespective of whether they are considered 'skill' or luck-based.

The bill also hits hard on influencers and celebrities, banning them from promoting such games. In the past few years, several national cricketers, coaches, and even board members have been seen featuring in television ads. If this bill is passed, doing so after that will bring punishments of:
Moreover, financial institutions like banks are also prohibited from offering services as simple as processing transactions on such platforms. Under the bill, authorised officials have been given the power to search and arrest without a warrant if someone is 'reasonably' suspected of committing offences under this Act.
This applies to any place, including:
physical premises/buildings,
vehicles,
computer resources,
virtual digital spaces,
electronic records/devices (with authority to override security codes).

MPL announces suspension of all money-based games after Parliament passes Online Gaming Bill 2025
Gaming company Mobile Premier League (MPL) announced on Thursday that it has suspended all money-based online games on its platform, shortly after Parliament passed the Online Gaming Bill 2025. 'Effective immediately, we are suspending all gaming offerings involving money on the MPL platform in India,' MPL said in a statement, according to a report by Reuters. The move comes as part of a jolt to the online gaming industry after the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill was passed amid sloganeering and chaos by the Opposition. Dream Sports, the parent company of fantasy gaming major Dream11, is also shutting down its money games for users, according to Entrackr. Speaking to the media outlet, company sources said Dream 11's decision to suspend its online money game business was announced to the staff in an internal town hall on August 20. The company will shift focus to other investments such as Willow TV and Cricbuzz and expansion into overseas markets. Zupee, another online gaming platform, also made a similar announcement. 'Zupee remains fully operational and our players can continue to enjoy their favourite games on the platform. In line with the new Online Gaming Bill 2025, we are discontinuing paid games, but our hugely popular free titles like Ludo Supreme, Ludo Turbo, Snakes & Ladders, and Trump Card Mania will continue to be available for all users for free. We remain committed to delivering fun, engaging, and responsible gaming and entertainment experiences to our 150 million users across India for free,' a company spokesperson said. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 has three aspects, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. These include e-sports, online social gaming and online money gaming, out of which 2/3rd segment (e-sports and online social gaming) will be promoted and encouraged. He described online money gaming as becoming a 'public health risk'. '…There is one such segment, 3rd - online money games, due to which a big problem has arisen in the society, especially in the middle-class youth. It gets addicted and the family's savings are spent. It is estimated that 45 crore people are affected by it and more than ₹ 20,000 crore has been destroyed in it. WHO has declared it a gaming disorder. Online money gaming has become a public health risk,' Vaishnaw said, adding that it is giving rise to psychological disorders, compulsive behaviour and violent behaviour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Bill and said it will promote e-sports while saving people from money games. 'This Bill, passed by both Houses of Parliament, highlights our commitment towards making India a hub for gaming, innovation and creativity,' PM Modi said in a post on X.

Parliament Session Over, Amit Shah Crafts BJP's Poll Push in South
New Delhi: The monsoon session of Parliament wrapped up, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has shifted focus to the southern battlegrounds of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, signalling the BJP's intent to expand its footprint in states where it has long remained a marginal force. On Thursday evening, Mr Shah landed in Kerala's Kochi to chair a key meeting of the BJP state leaders at the Renai Hotel, Palarivattom. The gathering, due on Friday morning, brings together senior leaders including Prakash Javadekar and state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar to chalk out strategies for the local body polls in November and the 2026 Assembly elections. This marks the first of Mr Shah's monthly reviews in Kerala, where the BJP has set itself the ambitious goal of winning around 20 per cent of local body wards, with a particular push in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and several municipalities. By projecting itself as a clean, development-driven alternative, the party is looking to erode both LDF and UDF vote shares, banking on the recent Lok Sabha momentum and narrow misses in the 2020 civic polls. "India Doesn't Take Any Position On Matters Of Faith, Religion": Minister On Dalai Lama's Succession
New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said it has seen a statement issued by the 14th Dalai Lama in July about the institution of the Dalai Lama, and underlined that it "does not take any position" on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said this in a written response to queries in the Rajya Sabha. The MEA was asked whether it is a fact that the government has "openly backed Dalai Lama's right to decide on his own succession". "Government has seen a statement regarding the institution of Dalai Lama issued by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on 02 July 2025. Government of India does not take any position on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion," the MoS said. "Government has always upheld freedom of religion for all in India and will continue to do so. Government's position has also been conveyed to the Chinese side," he said. In July, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) head Penpa Tsering countered the Chinese government's claim to the next Dalai Lama and said they should first look for the reincarnations of its own leadership. "The Chinese government also says they will look for the Dalai Lama's reincarnation within the borders of China. His Holiness is going to be reborn; he will decide where he wants to be reborn. How can the Chinese government dictate a lama, a spiritual being, where he or she should be reborn," Tsering had told PTI ahead of the 90th birthday celebration of the 14th Dalai Lama.
