"Fell unconscious...," says woman run over by car in Delhi
'The car ran over us... Me, my husband and children got injured. I got unconscious after being run over and sustained injuries on the chest and neck... We have been sleeping here (on the footpath) for many years...' she told ANI.
Another victim, Ramchander (45), detailed that all five of them were sleeping on a footpath in the Vasant Vihar area when the car, allegedly driven by a drunk driver, ran over them on June 9.
'We were sleeping when the car hit us at around 1 AM... Two people were injured, but then my wife's ear was also injured, and her rib was broken... The police took us to the hospital... There should be action against the driver...' he said.
Delhi Police have released a photo of the accused driver, Utsav Shekhar, who was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the accident. The man has been arrested, Police said.
The incident took place on Wednesday, at around 01:45 am when an Audi car on its way from Noida crushed people sleeping on the footpath near the Indian Oil Petrol Pump, in front of Shiva Camp, Vasant Vihar.
Delhi Police said, 'On dated 09.07.2025 at 01:45 AM, a PCR call vide DD No.3A regarding accident near Indian Petrol Pump, infront of Shiva Camp, Vasant Vihar was received at PS Vasant Vihar. On reaching the spot, it came to notice that injured persons have been shifted to hospitals. All were sleeping on footpath.'
The victims have been identified as Ladhi (age 40 years), Bimla (age 8 years), Sabami (age 45 years), Narayani (age 35 years), and Ramchander (age 45 years), all of whom are from Rajasthan. Police said that the driver of the Audi vehicle, named Utsav Shekhar, age 40, is a resident of Dwarka and deals in property-related work. He was returning home from Noida when the accident happened near the Indian Oil Petrol Pump, Vasant Vihar.
Police said, 'Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white colour Audi Car ran over the above-mentioned persons while they were sleeping on the footpath. The driver of the offending vehicle, namely Utsav Shekhar resident of Dwarka, age 40 yrs, was apprehended and legal action taken.'
The driver was allegedly drunk and had also hit a truck after the accident when the police caught him. Legal action against him has been taken, said Delhi police. (ANI)

BJD MLA Goutam Buddha Das told ANI, "It is very unfortunate news that a girl from our constituency died due to self-immolation. The student was being harassed by her teacher. She complained to the college principal, went to the MPs, and tweeted the same to the CM and the education minister. No one listened to her. The government is responsible for this." "We have decided to close Balasore tomorrow. We will organise a protest rally. We demand that the family of the victim should get the compensation of Rs 1 crore, and a judicial inquiry should happen," he added. The 20-year-old student had allegedly faced prolonged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite filing a formal complaint and seeking help from the college principal, her grievances reportedly went unheard, leading her to take the extreme step on campus last Saturday. She was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on Monday, hospital authorities said. In connection with the case, Fakir Mohan College's HoD, Samira Kumar Sahu, and Principal, Dilip Ghose, have been arrested.

UP man poses as gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to extort Rs 1 crore from Bengaluru businessman, arrested with 3 others
Four people, including three rowdy-sheeters from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested in Bengaluru over an extortion call in which a caller falsely claimed to be notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, the police said on Tuesday. The arrested accused are Mohammad Rafiq from Mavalli in Bengaluru, and UP natives Shishupal Singh alias Monty, Vansh Sachdev, and Amit Chaudhary, Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh said. Police investigations confirmed that none of the three had any connection to Lawrence Bishnoi, who is infamous for issuing death threats to actor Salman Khan and allegedly orchestrating the murders of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique. On July 9, a Bengaluru-based businessman allegedly received a phone call where the impersonator demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to kidnap his son if the ransom wasn't paid. He immediately contacted the police and filed a complaint. Special teams were formed and upon getting the technical details, the team initially arrested Rafiq. Through detailed call record analysis and technical investigations, officers tracked down the other three suspects to Delhi. They were brought to Bengaluru on transit warrants. The police revealed that Rafiq had a previous business relationship with the complainant involving unresolved financial matters from several years ago. However, the immediate motive was Rafiq's debt of approximately Rs 2 crore, which prompted his desperate search for money, they added. The conspiracy was hatched when Rafiq travelled to Delhi for court proceedings related to a previous case. There, he encountered Amit through advocates. After sharing his predicament, Amit offered a solution, claiming knowledge of individuals experienced in kidnapping and extortion operations, according to the police. The group of four met regularly and during one evening while drinking at Amit's lodge, they conceived the plan to impersonate Lawrence Bishnoi, according to the police. This decision was influenced by social media videos and reels about the gangster that they had watched online. Rafiq allegedly provided logistical support for his UP-based accomplices who made the extortion call. Investigations have uncovered that the suspects brought a countrymade pistol from Uttar Pradesh and the police are yet to recover it.

The 94-year-old Musliyar, who is officially known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, holds the title of Grand Mufti of India. He held talks with religious authorities in Yemen, who are in contact with Mahdi's family. Musliyar told news agency ANI that there is a law in Islam, which allows the victim's family to pardon the murderer. He said while he does not know the victim's family, he contacted Yemeni scholars and urged them to talk to the family. 'Islam has another law. If the murderer is sentenced to death, the family of the victim has the right to pardon. I don't know who this family is, but from a long distance, I contacted the responsible scholars in Yemen. I made them understand the issues. Islam is a religion that places a lot of importance on humanity," Musliyar was quoted. Under shariah law, as applied in Yemen, blood money is a legally recognised financial compensation paid to the family of a person who has been killed. It is a legally sanctioned alternative to capital punishment in Islamic jurisprudence. Nimisha Priya, hailing from Palakkad district, was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Yemeni capital Sanaa.
