UP man poses as gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to extort Rs 1 crore from Bengaluru businessman, arrested with 3 others

Indian Express3 days ago
Four people, including three rowdy-sheeters from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested in Bengaluru over an extortion call in which a caller falsely claimed to be notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, the police said on Tuesday.
The arrested accused are Mohammad Rafiq from Mavalli in Bengaluru, and UP natives Shishupal Singh alias Monty, Vansh Sachdev, and Amit Chaudhary, Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh said.
Police investigations confirmed that none of the three had any connection to Lawrence Bishnoi, who is infamous for issuing death threats to actor Salman Khan and allegedly orchestrating the murders of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique.
On July 9, a Bengaluru-based businessman allegedly received a phone call where the impersonator demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to kidnap his son if the ransom wasn't paid. He immediately contacted the police and filed a complaint.
Special teams were formed and upon getting the technical details, the team initially arrested Rafiq. Through detailed call record analysis and technical investigations, officers tracked down the other three suspects to Delhi. They were brought to Bengaluru on transit warrants.
The police revealed that Rafiq had a previous business relationship with the complainant involving unresolved financial matters from several years ago. However, the immediate motive was Rafiq's debt of approximately Rs 2 crore, which prompted his desperate search for money, they added.
The conspiracy was hatched when Rafiq travelled to Delhi for court proceedings related to a previous case. There, he encountered Amit through advocates. After sharing his predicament, Amit offered a solution, claiming knowledge of individuals experienced in kidnapping and extortion operations, according to the police.
The group of four met regularly and during one evening while drinking at Amit's lodge, they conceived the plan to impersonate Lawrence Bishnoi, according to the police. This decision was influenced by social media videos and reels about the gangster that they had watched online.
Rafiq allegedly provided logistical support for his UP-based accomplices who made the extortion call. Investigations have uncovered that the suspects brought a countrymade pistol from Uttar Pradesh and the police are yet to recover it.

Chaitanya Baghel, son of CM Bhupesh Baghel son in liquor scam case, he is accused of...

Chaitanya Baghel, son of CM Bhupesh Baghel son in liquor scam case, he is accused of... The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday arrested Chaitanya Baghel, son of Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in an alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case, official sources said. He was taken into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following fresh raids conducted at his residence in Bhilai town of Durg district. The father-son duo reside at the same place. A heavy posse of police personnel was seen outside the house, even as some party supporters gathered. The senior Baghel said it is Chaitanya's birthday on Friday. A special PMLA court sent Chaitanya to ED custody for five days, the sources said. The sources said Chaitnaya was arrested under Section 19 of the anti-money laundering law as he was allegedly not cooperating during the searches that came about following receipt of fresh evidence in the case. The sources said companies allegedly linked to Chaitanya were the 'recipient' of about Rs 17 crore 'proceeds of crime' that were generated from the alleged liquor scam. Funds worth about Rs 1,070 crore are under the scanner of the agency vis-a-vis the role of junior Baghel, according to the sources. The ED has claimed that the 'scam' resulted in a 'massive loss' to the state exchequer and filled the pockets of the beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate with over Rs 2,100 crore. Bhupesh Baghel, 63, posted a message on X saying the ED had come to his home on the last day of the Assembly session when the issue of trees being felled for a coal mine project of the Adani group in Tamnar tehsil of Raigarh district was to be raised. 'Today is the last day of the state legislative (monsoon) session. The issue of trees being felled for Adani in Tamnar was scheduled to be raised (in the House). Saheb has sent ED to Bhilai Niwas,' the message posted by his office said. The senior Baghel, earlier this month, visited the tehsil and extended support to local villagers who have been protesting against tree-felling for a coal mine project in the area. The mine is allotted to Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MAHAGENCO), which has contracted the MDO (mine developer cum operator) to the Adani group. The former chief minister also said central agencies were being misused to target opposition leaders, but he trusted the judiciary and would cooperate with them. Congress MLAs also boycotted the proceedings of the Chhattisgarh Assembly for the day as a mark of protest against the arrest and accused the agency of trying to harass the opposition. The federal probe agency had conducted similar raids against Chaitanya on March 10. In this case, the ED in January arrested former minister and Congress leader Kawasi Lakhma besides Anwar Dhebar, the elder brother of Raipur Mayor and Congress leader Aijaz Dhebar, former IAS officer Anil Tuteja, Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer Arunpati Tripathi and some others as part of this investigation. The alleged liquor scam in the central Indian state, according to the ED, was orchestrated between 2019 and 2022 when Chhattisgarh was governed by the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government. Assets worth about Rs 205 crore of various accused have been attached by the agency as part of this investigation so far. In 2024, the Supreme Court quashed the ED's first ECIR (FIR) in this case, which was based on a complaint from the Income Tax Department. The federal agency later filed a fresh case after it asked the Chhattisgarh Economic Offences Wing/ Anti-Corruption Bureau (EOW/ACB) to file a fresh FIR against the accused based on material shared by the anti-money laundering agency. The EOW/ACB registered the FIR on January 17 last year, about a month after the BJP defeated the incumbent Congress government in the 2023 assembly polls, and named 70 individuals and companies, including former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma, former chief secretary Vivek Dhand and others. According to the ED, the alleged commission generated through the illegal sale of liquor was shared 'as per the directions from the highest political executives of the state'.

80,000 Nudes And Rs 100 Crore Blackmail: All About Thai Woman Wilawan Emsawat

A major sex and extortion scandal has shaken Thailand after police arrested a woman on Tuesday for luring Buddhist monks into sexual relationships and then blackmailing them for money. The case has drawn huge public attention, as it involves monks breaking their vow of celibacy. At least nine abbots and senior monks involved in the scandal have been disrobed and cast out of the monkhood, the Royal Thai Police Central Investigation Bureau said. Who is Wilawan Emsawat? Wilawan Emsawat, a woman in her mid-30s, was arrested at her luxury home in Nonthaburi, just north of Bangkok. She's facing charges of extortion, money laundering, and receiving stolen goods. Police, who refer to her as "Ms Golf," said she had sexual relations with at least nine monks. After seizing her phones, investigators found messages and intimate videos involving other Buddhist leaders. They also discovered that she had used the blackmail money to spend heavily on illegal online gambling. According to The Times, some monks admitted to having relationships with Wilawan, who reportedly reached out to them on social media. One monk claimed he was in a long-term relationship with her and even received a car from her. But things fell apart when he found out she was seeing another monk-and then she started demanding money. 80,000 Nude Files And $11.9 Million Extortion Scandal (Rs 102 Crore) According to the BBC, investigators believe Wilawan Emsawat made about 385 million baht (Rs 102 crore) over the past three years. Police said they found over 80,000 photos and videos of her engaged in sexual acts with numerous Buddhist monks in her home, which were used to blackmail monks. Wilawan Emsawat claims she's given birth to a child. According to the Daily Star, Wilawan Emsawat claimed she had a child with one of the monks. Police said the case came to light in mid-June when an abbot in Bangkok suddenly left the monkhood after being blackmailed by a woman. The scandal broke when the abbot of Wat Tri Thotsathep monastery went missing. Police say he left to escape Emsawat's blackmail, and now she claims he is the father of her child. Disciplinary Action and Public Outrage Shake Buddhist Community According to The Times, nine monks, including several abbots of well-known temples, have been defrocked, and at least two have gone to ground. A committee in the senate has proposed amending the law to allow for the criminal prosecution of women who engage in sexual relations with monks. The idea has angered those who say that men should be held responsible for their own actions. "The scandal exposes a system of lies and hypocrisy among top monks. The sheer number suggests this isn't an isolated case. It's business as usual behind temple walls," Sanitsuda Ekachai, a columnist for the Bangkok Post, wrote. "Women have long been depicted in mainstream teachings as "enemies" of monks' spiritual purity. Some temple murals even show them as snakes. That's why the clergy still bans women from Bhikkhuni ordination. And now, when the clergy's moral decay is in full view, it's the woman who takes the fall while the monks are cast as victims," Sanitsuda Ekachai writes. More than 90 per cent of Thais are Buddhists, and at any one time there are about 200,000 monks and 85,000 novices. Scandals involving the Sangha, or Buddhist monastic community, are not uncommon in Thailand and often involve sex, money or both. But the seniority of the monks involved with Wilawan has made the incident unusual.
