Ship carrying 3,000 cars catches fire in Pacific (PHOTOS)
A cargo vessel carrying more than 3,000 electric and hybrid vehicles from China to Mexico has caught fire in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Alaska. All 22 crew members evacuated unharmed aboard a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby merchant vessel.
According to a statement by the Alaska Coast Guard on Wednesday, the Morning Midas – a Liberian-flagged and UK-managed ship – sent a distress call on Tuesday afternoon while passing approximately 300 miles (490km) southwest of Adak Island.

The US authorities have estimated that 70 fully electric and 681 hybrid vehicles were on board the Morning Midas at the time. The Coast Guard requested assistance from three nearby merchant vessels and dispatched several of its own ships and aircraft to the site of the incident.
Apart from its cargo, the ship is estimated to have approximately 1,900 metric tons of fuel onboard.
The Alaska Coast Guard's spokeswoman, Petty Officer First Class Shannon Kearney, was quoted by the New York Times as saying that officials had decided to allow the fire to burn out and not attempt to extinguish it due to the risks posed by the lithium-ion batteries in the vehicles on board. This type of battery can cause an explosion when heated and also produces toxic gases if it catches fire. The Coast Guard representative noted, however, that it was too early to conclude that it was the electric and hybrid vehicles that ignited first.
Zodiac Maritime, the company managing the cargo ship, said in a statement cited by the media that the blaze started at around 00:00 UTC on June 3. The crew initially attempted to put out the flames on their own but were unsuccessful.

Immigrant arrested after threatening to kill Trump
US immigration authorities have arrested a Mexican man who allegedly threatened to shoot President Donald Trump, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In a press release issued on Wednesday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem thanked US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, saying the 'illegal alien … is behind bars.' Earlier this month, ICE received a handwritten letter from 54-year-old Ramon Morales Reyes in which he vowed to 'shoot your precious president in (his) head' at one of Trump's rallies. The DHS published an image of the letter, in which Morales blamed ICE for deporting his family and, after threatening to kill Trump, promised to self-deport. 'We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans – we have done more for this country than you, white people,' the letter read. Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind threat comes not even a year after President Trump was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania and less than two weeks after former FBI Director Comey called for the… Morales, who, according to DHS, entered the US illegally at least nine times between 1998 and 2005 and has a criminal record that includes a felony hit-and-run, was arrested the next day and is now awaiting deportation. Trump survived an assassination attempt when a gunman took shots at him during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The would-be assassin grazed Trump's ear with a bullet, killed a spectator in the crowd behind him, and injured several others. 'This threat comes not even a year after Butler and less than two weeks after former FBI Director (James) Comey called for the President's assassination,' Noem said, urging politicians and the media to 'tone down their rhetoric.'Earlier this month, Trump accused Comey – a longtime critic – of calling for his assassination in a now-deleted Instagram post. The image showed seashells spelling out '86 47,' captioned 'cool shell formation on my beach walk.' White House officials and Republicans said the numbers were a coded threat to the 47th US president, with '86' interpreted as slang for 'get rid of' or 'kill.' An investigation is underway. Comey has denied endorsing violence.

Mexican Navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge (VIDEOS)
Two sailors were killed and many others injured when a Mexican Navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night. The vessel lost power and drifted into the bridge during its departure from New York, according to officials. Videos from the scene show the ARM Cuauhtemoc's three tall, illuminated masts crashing into the underside of the bridge's road deck and toppling onto the ship. Multiple crew members were stationed on the masts at the time of the impact, the New York Post reported, citing fire officials and unnamed sources. The outlet also said rescuers were seen pulling people from the water. The ARM Cuauhtemoc was carrying 277 crew members when the incident occurred. New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters that at least 19 people were injured, including four in critical condition. 'The status of the personnel and material is under review by naval and local authorities, who are providing support,' the Mexican Navy said in a statement on X. According to the Latin Times, the crew may have miscalculated the height of the ship's 171-foot masts in relation to the bridge's 127-foot clearance at high tide. Despite the dramatic crash, officials have found no major structural damage to the bridge. Fabien Levy, a spokesman for Mayor Adams, said there appeared to be 'no signs of structural damage.'In an absolutely stunning modern metaphor a ship blaring Mexican music and flying a massive Mexican flag just got destroyed by the Brooklyn bridge. Can't make it The Cuauhtemoc had been in New York on a goodwill visit ahead of an international parade of tall ships next year in New York Harbor to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.
