Jeff Bezos's wedding would be better in Beverly Hills, says abbot

Jeff Bezos's wedding would be better in Beverly Hills, says abbot

Times15 hours ago

The abbot of one of Venice's most famous churches has joined the protest against Jeff Bezos's star-studded wedding in the city next week, telling the Amazon tycoon he would be better off marrying in a Beverly Hills mansion.
Stefano Visintin is the latest local resident to complain about the planned three-day party for 200 guests, said to include Kim Kardashian, Donald Trump Jr and Ivanka Trump.
One venue said to be hired out by Bezos is San Giorgio Maggiore, the tiny island facing St Mark's Square where the world's third richest man and his bride, Lauren Sánchez, are expected to hold a concert at an open-air amphitheatre with lagoon views.
However, the island is also home to a 16th-century church designed by Andrea Palladio and presided over by Visintin, who told The Times he was concerned noisy protesters on boats would try to halt guests arriving.
'Bezos has plenty of enemies in Venice and they may all converge on San Giorgio Maggiore,' he said. 'People are free to hold parties, but this one is going to attract huge attention, a police presence and a protest that could get dangerous. Maybe Bezos could have picked a more isolated and controllable venue. Why not a mansion in Beverly Hills?'
Visintin said he got an early taste of the tension to come when protesters scaled the church's bell tower last week and hung a banner with a red line drawn through the name Bezos. 'We will be forced to close the tower during the wedding. We do not want to close the church otherwise people will think Bezos is getting married in it, which is not the case,' the abbot said.
The protesters who hung the banner and who have plastered Venice with posters criticising the wedding are a collection of unionists, students, activists against over-tourism and housing rights campaigners going by the name 'No Space for Bezos'.
'Bezos arrogantly believes he can take over the city and turn it into his own private party venue,' said Tommaso Cacciari, a leading member.
Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice, strikes a more welcoming tone. He has dismissed the protesters as a small minority and said he is 'proud' the tycoon picked the city. His officials point out that celebrity weddings are commonplace in Venice, including George and Amal Clooney's in 2014, and celebrities flock in annually for the Venice film festival.
Cacciari argued that Bezos was a special case. 'We are protesting because of his support for President Trump and his exploitation of Amazon workers,' he said. 'This is political.'
The reported dates for the bash have slipped from June 24-26 to June 26-28, and Cacciari claimed the schedule featured a party at the Pagoda beach club at the Venice Lido on the 26th, the event on San Giorgio Maggiore the following day and an event at a 16th-century hall, the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia, on the 28th.
Cacciari, who is the nephew of a former mayor of Venice, accused Brugnaro of having a 'conflict of interest' over the use of the city-owned hall since it is rented out by a firm he set up before he was elected. 'We will be filling the canals that access the building with inflatable animals, like crocodiles, to peacefully block access, or at least show the billionaires that this is not Las Vegas,' Cacciari said.
The protest has made headlines around the world and turned into a lesson for Bezos on how not to conduct public relations. As the tycoon's representatives tried to keep details of event secret, unfounded stories about the city's water taxis being block-booked and canals being shut by Bezos went viral.
Recent claims by the Bezos camp that the wedding will use local bakeries and glass makers, thus investing in the local economy look like a late attempt to change the narrative. 'The mistake they made was believing they didn't need to explain and believing that Venice would be proud to host the wedding,' said Gianluca Comin, founder of Comin & Partners, an Italian PR company. 'Whereas Venetians actually believe the city bestows prestige on those who visit.'

Kanye West slammed for dressing his wife Bianca Censori like an exact clone of his ex Kim Kardashian after she gets extensions like the reality star: 'She'll never be good enough for him'

Kanye West has been slammed for dressing his Australian wife Bianca Censori exactly like his ex Kim Kardashian. On Monday, the 30-year-old Australian architect, known for her highly provocative fashion choices, put on a very daring display as she stepped out in a plunging nude leotard. Looking very much like Kim Kardashian's doppelganger, Censori also wore voluminous black hair extensions, further prompting comparisons to the reality star Queen. It was not lost on fans, with many pointing out the similarities between the pair. Many also took aim at West, claiming he was behind the decision for Censori to channel his ex wife. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'I see Kanye had her dress just like Kim all the way down to the Kim wig,' one fan commented on Daily Mail's article on the risqué exhibition. Another suggested that Censori's frequent racy displays were the result of 'low self esteem'. 'Bianca either has really low self esteem and she doesn't think she deserves better than being bossed around by her husband or she likes being told what to do and the attention she gets, she is unstable like her husband,' they suggested. A third chimed in with a similar: 'He probably makes her wear cardboard mask with Kim's face on it, looks like she's gone and got hair extensions to match too.' The criticism didn't end there, either with another suggesting West was controlling how Censori looked in public. 'How can a woman be happy with a man who really wants her to be his ex-wife?' they asked. 'How can she be happy with herself, does she look in the mirror and say "Life's great, I'm looking more like Kim today".' Yet another offered: 'Dressed up to look like his ex wife, she'll never be good enough for him but I guess all she cares about is the dollars.' 'I see Kanye had her dress just like Kim all the way down to the Kim wig,' one fan commented on Daily Mail's article on the risqué exhibition It wasn't all negative however, with many pointing out Bianca was cutting a much more demure figure than some of her previous outings. 'I really don't see the outrage?, one offered, coming to Bianca's defence. ' It's a full 1 piece swimsuit and leggings? everything is covered and shown to perfection.' That's a lot more than she usually wears,' another suggested. Since walking down the aisle with Censori, the rapper has encouraged his wife to wear a number of very racy looks, which have caused a stir online. Last month, Censori angered locals after baring her breasts in a sheer bra during a shopping trip with West in Spain. Locals were 'left horrified' as the couple walked through the market in the revealing ensemble. One witness told People were horrified. They could be heard asking "is that her real nipple?" as they walked by.' Despite the backlash, women have been allowed to go topless in certain areas of Spain since 2020 under Catalan equality law. Spanish officials have enforced rules that allow women to sunbathe topless in public without fear of arrest, according to the Daily Record. Authorities can be fined up to £430,000 if they prevent women from going topless. However, her revealing look was still deemed ''inappropriate' and many have slammed her look. 'Why hasn't this woman been arrested for indecency yet!!!?' one person asked. No strangers to scandal, West and Censori have continuously raised eyebrows over their choices in clothing, with Bianca's barely-there looks sparking fury from locals. During a previous Italian trip in 2023, Censori wore a slew of eccentric outfits during the couple's getaway. In February 2025, the couple shocked the world after she exposed herself on the red carpet in a see-through dress. At the time, a source close to her husband told the New York Post claimed that Censori was 'talked into' wearing the nude dress. 'She would have much rather worn a pretty dress,' the insider said. 'She would have enjoyed the evening a lot more.' West is said to have lost a $20 million deal to play in Japan as a result of his controversial stunt.
