The film tells a story of survival, resistance and sorority in the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp – the only one of its kind – during the final days of World War II.
'Each of Us' is directed by an all-female team of four European filmmakers: Anne Zohra Berrached ('24 Weeks'), Neus Ballús ('The Plague,' 'The Odd-Job Men'), Stina Werenfels ('Dora Or the Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents') and Anna Jadowska ('Woman on the Roof,' 'Wild Roses').
The film, inspired by true stories, is written by screenwriters Eva Pauné and Mirjam Ziegler. It follows the intertwined stories of four women from different countries who struggle to preserve their humanity amidst the brutal conditions of the camp. Their lives become linked through a young girl who brings both hardship to them but also hope.
'Each of Us' is lensed by Agnieszka Holland's favorite director of photography Jolanta Dylewska ('In Darkness,' 'Spoor,' 'Ayka') and edited by Pedro Almodovar's collaborator Teresa Font ('The Room Next Door,' 'Parallel Mothers').
The producers state: 'To allow for an authentic representation of our four protagonists' backgrounds, experiences, and identities, 'Each of Us' is filmed in a truly unique way: each director focused on a different protagonist, offering her individual attention from screenwriting to mise-en-scène. From the rushes, we can tell the result is an awe-inspiring experience — marked by emotional depth and a strong connection to the protagonists and their individual journeys, in which solidarity, the characters' quiet strength, and a sense of hope rise far above the harsh realities depicted.'
The film is produced by Alhena Production (Spain), Bon Voyage Films (Germany), Turnus Film (Switzerland), and Blick Productions International (Poland), in co-production with Ramen Studio and EFD Group.
The project was developed with the support of Media Creative Europe, and is also supported in Spain by ICAA, ICEC, TVE and TVC, in Germany by ARTE, SR, SWR, RBB, BR, MDM, MOIN and MBB, in Switzerland by BAK, Zurich Filmfund and RGB Stiftung, and in Poland by PISF and WFDIF.
The film is in production and being shot in Poland, Germany and Spain.
'We are honored to represent 'Each of Us,' a film that brings together a remarkable team of female directors (two of whom we had the pleasure to work with before, Neus Ballús and Anne Zohra Berrached) and a compelling narrative that resonates universally,' said Thorsten Ritter, executive vice president of Beta Cinema. 'Its exploration of resilience and solidarity in the face of unimaginable adversity is both timely and timeless.'
Beta Cinema's Cannes slate also includes Fatih Akin's new film 'Amrum,' screening in official selection, several English-language upcoming titles like the Bill Nighy-led road-movie '500 Miles,' and the market premieres of the Italian hit comedy 'U.S. Palmese' by directors Antonio and Marco Manetti, and the Spanish debut 'The Remnants of You' by Gala Gracia.

‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' director Ian Bonhôte learned that ‘strength lies in you'

'When do you get to make a Superman film?,' asks Ian Bonhôte speaking about his work on Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. He adds, 'it was an opportunity we couldn't miss. Playing with the Superman idea, concept and visuals was an amazing opportunity.' Watch our full interview above with Bonhôte joining our Gold Derby "Meet the Experts" directors panel. Bonhôte co-wrote and co-directed the documentary with long-time collaborator Peter Ettedgui. The film explores both Christopher Reeve's rise to fame as Superman and the aftermath of a riding accident that left him with a high-level spinal cord injury. The film effectively uses footage of Reeve's Superman films to weave the story together. Bonhôte explains they used this as a 'metaphor of him as a superhero' and that 'after the accident, there's this tragically amazing metaphor of pure strength which you can't find on earth. He has to be an alien, and someone who lost all strength. We felt that trying to tell the story, always coming back to his life as Superman.' More from Gold Derby Neon sets Oscar path for latest Cannes winner 'The Secret Agent': Everything to know about the thriller TIFF reveals its compelling documentary slate featuring Paula Deen, champion whistlers and balloonists An example of Reeve finding his strength again was a scene in the film where he teaches his son Will to ride a bike even though he was paralyzed. Bonhôte says, 'He talked him through it. What Chris shows us through the film is that a voice, an intelligence, a conviction, a vision is more important than loads of movement.' Earlier this year, the HBO Max film won the BAFTA, PGA, and Gold Derby Film Award for Best Documentary Feature. More recently, Bonhôte and Ettedgui have been nominated for Emmys this summer in the documentary/nonfiction directing category and the nonfiction writing category. Bonhôte reflects on what made Reeve strong, 'For the first 40 or so years of his life, he represented virility and this very strong American masculinity. He embodied beauty, sport, strength, intelligence. What happened after the accident, counted more on his voice, still his intelligence and, as his children say, his piercing blue eyes. So I think strength lies in you, in what you believe in, your ethos, what you stand for and what you do with your life.' This article and video are presented by HBO Max. Margaret Qualley Took the Iconic Cosmo Quiz Between Making Movies

Hearst Owned You know when someone is so booked and busy it feels kind of spiritual? That's Margaret Qualley right now. Case in point: The very morning she sat down to chat with Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Willa Bennett for her 60th anniversary cover interview, her latest film Honey Don't!—the second entry in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke's Drive-Away Dolls lesbian road trip trilogy—was announced to premiere at Cannes. Not bad for a random Wednesday. And that's not all she has going on right now. She is also starring in Richard Linklater's Blue Moon and just wrapped Huntington, a darkly funny thriller with Glen Powell—and yes, you did spot her in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix last weekend. Somehow, she still managed to show up to the set of her cover shoot on time and with the vibe of a girl who borrowed her best friend's sweater on the way out the door—not the air you'd expect of someone redefining screen stardom before our very eyes. She understandably had no time to fill out her version of our iconic Cosmo Quiz between photo setups, but she promised she'd get it done—and she's a woman of her word! So she FedEx'd us her completed copy from yes, she was working on yet another movie. (We knew she'd come through!) Over more than a decade in the game, Margaret's made a name for herself inhabiting characters who sit right at the intersection of womanhood, contradiction, and full-blown emotional hurricane. And we wouldn't have it any other way. The answers to her quiz aren't indicative of any characters though. They're quintessentially Margaret. Married. Jack Antonoff. Adam Sandler. Asheville, NC. ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Trailer: Spike Lee's Latest Joint Is an Entertaining Homage to Akira Kurosawa

One of the best-reviewed films out of Cannes is ready for its August debut. From writer/director Spike Lee, 'Highest 2 Lowest' has released its official theatrical trailer. The movie is the fifth collaboration between Lee and Oscar-winning star Denzel Washington. It is, as IndieWire's own David Ehrlich described it, a 'jarringly upbeat' and 'deliriously entertaining' homage to Akira Kurosawa's bleak 1963 classic 'High and Low.' More from IndieWire Amazon CEO 'Cannot Wait' to Start Denis Villeneuve's James Bond Movie It's Time for Millennials to Make Lindsay Lohan a Movie Star Again A$AP Rocky — whose real name is Rakim Mayers — co-stars, thanks largely to Lee scrolling, as we all do, on Instagram. 'What's funny is that I was looking at Instagram four or five years ago and people were saying that A$AP looked like he's Denzel's son,' Lee told Carmelo Anthony in April. 'I seen those memes and then in the film we used that.' Lee went on to praise Rocky — who also laid down a track teased in the trailer for the film — saying 'A$AP, man, he fire… I mean, there's some scenes where him and D head to head – he ain't backing up. Like, 'I'm here too.' So very, very happy with the way the film turned out and looking forward to sharing it with the world.' Ehrlich agreed in his review, writing that Rocky was 'just as good here as he is in recent Sundance highlight 'If I Had Legs I'd Kick You.'' Ehrlich also detailed the plot, writing that the 'protagonist is forced into a compromising position on the eve of a critical business deal when a downtrodden kidnapper mistakes his driver's son for his own kid, Trey (Aubrey Joseph). And once again [as in 'High and Low'], all the money in the world can't save him from paying a price for his greed.' 'Highest 2 Lowest' already has big name fans, too, including director Martin Scorsese, who Lee related through an Instagram post heaped high praise on the film. Actually, he wrote that Scorsese 'gushed' about virtually every aspect of the movie, including Washington's performance, the editing, cinematography, and, of course, Lee's direction. 'Marty Was So Happy For Me,' Lee said. 'Highest 2 Lowest' is the first Lee joint since 2020's 'Da 5 Bloods,' which was distributed by Netflix during the pandemic. His previous film, 'BlackKkKlansman,' brought Lee a long-awaited Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. 'Highest 2 Lowest' hits theaters everywhere on August 22 before streaming on Apple TV+ September 5. Watch the trailer below.
