Maha working with 5 more foreign universities to set up campuses in MMR: CM
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that the state government is working with five more foreign universities to set up their campuses in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR), after it granted letters of intent (LoI) to five foreign varsities to set up campuses in Navi Mumbai, a part of MMR.
'We are working with them. But we cannot disclose their names,' Fadnavis said on Saturday after the government granted LOIs to Aberdeen University, the University of York, the University of Western Australia, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), aiming to create an international education city at Navi Mumbai.
He said EduCity is being developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) of Maharashtra, and the campuses are planned within a 5-kilometre radius of the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Fadnavis clarified that the government will only facilitate the universities' plans to set up campuses in MMR and that the state will not bear any financial responsibility.
Professor Guy Littlefair, deputy vice-chancellor (education and student experience), University of Western Australia, said, 'We've worked with the University Grants Commission, and we've looked at the expertise we have at our university, and we've looked at the demand locally here within the region. And we have decided to progress in the first instance with business courses and also STEM courses, in particular computer science.'
Littlefair confirmed that the UGC has given universities an 18-month window to start their operations after receiving the LoIs.
Speaking about the student enrollment plans, Littlefair said, 'We're going to start off in the hundreds and head towards the thousands in the next five to ten years.'
Besides, Fadnavis stated that, apart from an educity, the government is also creating a medicity, a sports city and an innovation city. 'This innovation city will be one of its kind, will host all the innovation ecosystems in the arena, and it will be such an ecosystem that will foster all the next-generation technologies and innovations.'

Foreign universities' campuses will help our children get global education at 25 per cent expenditure,' he said. 'A growing economy like India needs a global workforce. The decision to set up foreign campuses here will help achieve the goal and also save foreign exchange. Mumbai and its metropolitan region will emerge as a global education hub,' the CM added. Speaking at the press conference, Pradhan said nine foreign universities are setting up campuses in the country, while six more are in the pipeline. 'We are focusing on quality foreign education,' the Union minister added. Fadnavis also informed that Gondwana University in Gadchiroli has tied up with University of Western Australia, which is considered the best in mining. Our mining destination is Gadchiroli, he said. Hailing NEP 2020, Fadnavis said it was helping universities of the country tie up with global institutions and also open campuses abroad. IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, Symbiosis etc have set up campuses in Africa, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, he added.

Days after a surprise meeting between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and MNS chief Raj Thackeray triggered speculations about the possibility of a BJP-MNS alliance, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday described the current political atmosphere in Maharashtra as a 'madari ka khel' (puppet show), alleging that the CM was attempting to manipulate all parties to suit the BJP's interests. 'Fadnavis tries to play with everyone at the same time. He thinks every party in Maharashtra dances to his tune. What is happening in the state is not politics—this is a circus,' Raut wrote in his weekly column Rokhthok published in Saamana, the Sena UBT's mouthpiece. Accusing Fadnavis of ignoring the concerns of Mumbai's Marathi population, Raut alleged that Fadnavis was working in favour of corporate interests—particularly those of industrialist Gautam Adani. 'Fadnavis is openly supporting those who want to push the Marathi population out of Mumbai. Under his tenure, prime land parcels in the city are being handed over to Adani. Is this an attempt to drain Mumbai and send everything to Gujarat?' Raut wrote. 'One hopes Raj Thackeray asked him these questions during their meeting.' Raut further alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi treated Mumbai as a commercial hub, not a city rooted in Marathi identity. 'Fadnavis does whatever Delhi tells him to. And in their eyes, Mumbai is a trading post—not a cultural capital,' he wrote.
