in the next 24 to 48 hours and take over as the new coach of the national football team.
The executive committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) cleared the path for Jamil to succeed Manolo Marquez as the national team coach on August 1, but it took almost 10 days of negotiations for both parties to reach an agreement.
According to sources, Jamil has now signed a two-year contract with a provision to extend the agreement by another year, depending on performances, largely linked to India's qualification for the AFC Asian Cup 2027. The coach remains contracted to Jamshedpur until June 2026, but the club has agreed to release him, despite the Indian Super League (ISL) semifinalists being involved in the knockout stages of the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament.
Jamshedpur won all three games and made it to the quarterfinals.
'Khalid wanted to take up the India job, it's a dream assignment for any domestic coach, but it's not an easy time for Jamshedpur since the decision comes just a month after they started pre-season,' a senior official told TOI. 'The club will release Khalid and appoint an interim coach.'
Jamil's first assignment with the national team will be the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup 2025, where India have games against hosts Tajikistan (Aug 29), Iran (Sept 1), and Afghanistan (Sept 4).

'The preparatory camp will start in Kolkata from Aug 15. Jamil has already been handed a list of players who were involved in the last three international games and he will prepare a shortlist. Since six ISL clubs are yet to start pre-season training, it remains to be seen if he only picks players involved in competitive games like the Durand Cup and ACL qualifier,' said another official.
Jamil's first competitive match in charge will be an Asian Cup qualifier away in Singapore on Oct 9, followed by the return leg in Bengaluru five days later.
Jamil was handpicked by the AIFF executive committee after a recommendation from its technical committee, led by former India captain IM Vijayan. Dronacharya Award winners, Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, advisors to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, also supported the domestic coach, ahead of Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic.
An AFC pro coaching licence holder since 2015, the 48-year-old has managed over 200 games in the I-League with stints at clubs like Mumbai FC, Aizawl FC – with whom he scripted a fairytale I-League triumph – East Bengal, and Mohun Bagan. In the Indian Super League (ISL), now the top-tier league, he has guided NorthEast United and Jamshedpur to the semifinals, despite being teams with much lower budgets.

AIFF counsel likely to mention ISL impasse to Supreme Court on Monday

New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is likely to mention the raging issue concerning the Indian Super League before the Supreme Court on Monday. The apex court has reserved its judgement on draft AIFF constitution and a hearing is scheduled for Monday. Hundreds of Indian and foreign footballers are living in uncertainty as the Masters Rights Agreement (MRA) between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF with regards to Indian Super League is yet to be signed. The clubs have decided not to pay salaries to the players and support staff till the impasse continues. 'Yes we will be attempting to mention but since judgement is reserved we have to see how the judges takes it. If they feel there is merit in appeal, they may ask for an application to be filed. The plight of the players, clubs and football need to be brought to their notice, " a club source told PTI. The AIFF on Wednesday asked the legal counsels of the game's apex body and the ISL clubs to 'hold discussions" on the teams' concerns about the uncertainty over the upcoming season of the top-tier league. Last week, 11 Indian Super League clubs had urged the AIFF to urgently bring the 'current situation" of Indian football, arising out of the uncertainty over ISL's future, to the attention of the Supreme Court before which a case relating to the constitution of the national federation is pending. The ISL clubs, in a letter, said that they will have no option but to seek judicial recourse independently if the AIFF does not act on their request. 'On August 13, the AIFF responded and requested that the legal counsels of the clubs and the federation meet to hold discussions on the matter and decide on further action," the AIFF tweeted. The clubs requested the AIFF to approach the top court a day after the national federation proposed the Super Cup in September to ensure sufficient competitive matches for the clubs after ISL organisers FSDL put a 'pause" on the league due to uncertainty over the renewal of Master Rights Agreement (MRA) it signed with them in 2010. The crisis deepened after ISL organisers FSDL put the 2025-26 season 'on hold" on July 11 due to uncertainty over the renewal of the MRA, prompting at least three clubs to either pause first-team operations or suspend player and staff salaries. Kalyan Chaubey adds twist to ISL return plans: ‘Leave no stone unturned', but timeline still under cloud

The future of Indian football has been placed in great jeopardy in recent weeks, with the domestic season suspended as the All India Football Federation races to try and renew the investment and marketing contracts signed during the Indian Super League's inception in 2010. Kalyan Chaubey during a press conference for the AIFF.(HT_PRINT) However, with plenty of fears surrounding the state of Indian football, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey finally had some good news to share. In a conversation with Revssportz, Chaubey revealed that positive progress has been made, and provided a rough timeline for when some concrete movement might be seen. 'Detailed discussions took place about every aspect, which comprised of five major points,' explained Chaubey. 'I would like to infer that ISL should happen and I am hopeful about that.' 'Major issues are that the marketing [deals] that got signed in 2010 have to be renewed in 2025 and another constitutional case from 2017 is about to get its judgement in 2025 – these two coinciding has given rise to the uncertainty of the league,' explained Chaubey regarding the roadblocks. '2.5 to 3 months to resolve…' 'In spite of these hurdles, India being a country where football is so popular, I would say AIFF would leave no stone unturned to take measures for making this league possible,' he said. Further, he went on to state that there is a window in mind for the ISL, with an attempt being made to bring football to the country while that process takes place. 'As an alternative, we are thinking if we can bring the Super Cup ahead of ISL, which usually takes place after the (ISL) season,' he explained. 'So, in case these matters take time to resolve, which is approximately two and a half to three months, then we can still have the league till 31st of May which is usually the end of the season.' The ISL is currently suspended, which in conjunction with the national men's team's poor run of form has caused a crisis of confidence in the workings of the AIFF and domestic football. However, when quizzed about how to rectify these issues, Chaubey remained staunch that investment and a long-term roadmap are integral. 'The league's marketing rights are getting over this year, and for overall growth, investors are required, a long-term development plan and a clarity for the next 15-20 years is required,' concluded the AIFF president.
