MIAMI — About the best thing that can be said about Luis Gil's first start of the season is that there will be a second one.
'I felt really, really good, and that's what's important,' Gil said through an interpreter Sunday after giving up five runs in 3 ¹/₃ innings of a 7-3 loss to the Marlins that chased the Yankees away from south Florida as sweep victims. 'If you've got to take something positive from an outing, today health was big, coming back being healthy. But also the movement of the pitches was there.'
Gil was pitching for the Yankees for the first time since he started Game 4 of the World Series against the Dodgers on Oct. 29 at Yankee Stadium.
The 2024 American League Rookie of the Year had a spring bullpen session cut short with tightness in his right side on Feb. 28. The next day, an MRI exam revealed a high-grade lat strain.

After four minor league rehab appearances, Gil was ready to take the ball and try to help the Yankees salvage a game in this weekend series.
He worked around a single and a walk in the first inning, but walked two more to start the second.

Troy Johnston's double scored the tying run, Xavier Edwards drove in another run with a single and Kyle Stowers drove in Johnston with a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth inning, with the Yankees still trailing 3-1, Gil helped let the game get away. He issued his fourth walk of the afternoon to Graham Pauley and was then removed after giving up a single to Edwards. Brent Headrick came on and served up a three-run homer to Stowers.
'Obviously, a struggle,' Aaron Boone said of Gil's outing. 'Just no real command today. I thought he started to maybe get a little bit of rhythm there in the third [which he ended with two strikeouts], but then that kind of went away.
'He flashed some of his stuff. I thought he did some good things down in the zone, especially with some of their lefties. But just, you know, [he was] too inconsistent with the strike throwing.'

Gil threw 77 pitches, just short of what pitching coach Matt Blake had said was the target. Of those, 44 were strikes and 33 were balls. Gil threw a first-pitch strike to only eight of the 19 batters he faced. His 10 outs broke down to two grounders, five fly balls and three strikeouts.
'Yeah, definitely the command there didn't help out. That wasn't commanding the way I wanted it,' Gil said.
The 27-year-old righty understands the Yankees' situation — in third place in the AL East and second in the AL wild-card race. They sit just 2 ¹/₂ games ahead of the Rangers, who are the first team below the cutoff, heading into the teams' three-game set in Arlington, Texas, beginning Monday. Gil knows there isn't time for him to ramp up slowly as he tries to find last season's form.
'Our team is in a fight and we're going to keep fighting to be where we want to be,' he said. 'I need to make quick adjustments and start helping out this ballclub.'

MN Twins Owner Stepped In, Closed Carlos Correa Trade Himself

Well, it's been two days since the Minnesota Twins hit the full reset button on their future as a Major League Baseball organization by trading away 10 of the 26 players on their active roster, the most notable being $37 million per year shortstop, Carlos Correa. In the midst of the worst season in his 11-year MLB career, Minnesota offloaded about two-thirds of Correa's remaining contract by trading him back to the Houston Astros, where he became one of the best players in all of baseball from 2015-2021. The move was a straight salary dump. Minnesota got a pitcher back in the deal, but he's 26 years old and yet to make it beyond single-A. More details of Correa's departure have come through, since the trade was completed. Related Headlines Vikings Name Starting QB for First Preseason Game One Minnesota Twins Pitcher Devastated by Trade Minnesota Vikings Add More Pass-Catching Help Of course, nobody was surprised to find out that the Pohlad family quickly jumped on their first opportunity to trade the 30-year-old World Series champion, after the Astros first called and showed interest. The trade also moves Correa to 3rd base, something he had been requesting with the Twins for years. What most do not know yet, however, is that it was actually the Pohlads who were called out of the negotiating bullpen to close out the Correa blockbuster, in place of team president, Derek Falvey. Minnesota Twins owner Jim Pohlad closed Carlos Correa deal himself In fact, according to longtime local columnist, Patrick Reusse (Star Tribune) on a recent episode of 'Reusse Unchained' (SKOR North), Mr. Jim Pohlad himself got on the phone with Astros owner Jim Crane, who he convinced to take on a larger chunk of Correa's remaining money. It was that final owner-to-owner phone conversation that got the trade done. Meanwhile, Falvey and the newer face of Pohlad ownership, nephew Joe Pohlad, watched from their chairs in the corner of big Jim's office (okay i made that very last part up). Reusse: '[Astros owner] Jim Crane called and made it happen, apparently.' Judd: 'So he called Jim Pohlad?' Reusse: 'Jim Pohlad, he called Jim Pohlad. He did not call Joe [Pohlad]…he called Jim Pohlad and they negotiated the money.' Judd: 'So, literally the adults above Falvey decided to work this deal out and told young Derek, 'You're gonna [sit this one out]'?' Reusse: 'Yes. Jim [Crane] called [Jim Pohlad] up and they wanted [the Twins to pay] half [of Correa's remaining money] and [Jim Pohlad] got them down to a third, basically.' Patrick Reusse – 'Reusse Unchained' – SKOR North Only time will tell how this trade will work out, in the end. If the nearly 31-year-old Correa can't recover from his horrid 95-game start to 2025 (.264/.315/.381) and continues to decline, as he ages, then the future will look fondly back on the fact that Minnesota was able to offload most of his remaining salary back on Houston. Should he recover, however, and start looking more like the Carlos Correa of old — who was on pace to be the greatest postseason performer in MLB history when he first left the Astros — then the Twins will look like jackasses. But what's new? Why would Pohlad need to close out the Correa deal? I'd imagine that this started when reports were coming out that the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros were still far apart on the money involved in getting a Carlos Correa trade deadline blockbuster done. Both front offices had their terms in which they were allowed to pull the trigger. When those directives did not align, it was time for the adults to take over, as Judd Zulgad so eloquently put it. Related: In a normal scenario, this wouldn't surprise me. Most MLB organizations these days have a 'president of baseball operations' running their front offices, a few still employ general managers as their head baseball honcho. Depending on the team, an owner might want to step in and massage things, when necessary. But Derek Falvey is supposed to be above that. Not only is he president of Minnesota Twins baseball operations, but he's president of business operations too, the only MLB executive right now to hold both titles. MN Twins Interested in Former (Familiar) Top Reliever

The Minnesota Twins traded nearly 40% of their roster prior to the MLB trade deadline. Of those moved, five-of-eight bullpen spots were turned over. Rocco Baldelli once had baseball's best bullpen, and now has next to nothing. After Travis Adams made his first career start, and looked good doing so, Noah Davis came on and blew the game against Detroit on Monday night. There is going to be much more of that if Baldelli can't get a level of competency from his bullpen. The Twins don't have much to play for, but they could put a better foot forward in terms of pride. That may have them grabbing a quality arm off the open market, and Ryan Pressly now happens to be there. It gave the former Twins setup man an opportunity to rack up saves again. Unfortunately he has struggled this year and was DFA'd when the club acquired former Twins closer Taylor Rogers at the deadline. Now he's on the Twins radar. With an inexperienced back end of the bullpen, multiple league sources said the Twins have reached out to veteran free agent Ryan Pressly about a possible reunion. Pressly converted five of seven save attempts and notched seven holds with a 4.35 ERA in 44 games this season before he was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Thursday and released on Friday. Dan Hayes – The Athletic As The Athletic's Dan Hayes points out, the Minnesota Twins would represent a reunion for Pressly. Minnesota grabbed him as a Rule 5 pick from Boston prior to the 2013 season and he spent the first six seasons of his career with the Twins. Pressly went on to win a World Series with the Houston Astros, and continued his development from Minnesota to become an elite high-leverage arm. Pressly made two separate All-Star appearances while pitching in his home state, and has turned in a very nice career. Related: Now 36 years old, Pressly owns a 4.35 ERA (5.02 FIP) for Chicago. The strikeouts have dipped, the walks have risen, and his 1.3 HR/9 is the second highest of his career. With Minnesota though, the pressure would be non-existent and he could look to rebuild value going into next season. Suitors aplenty for Ryan Pressly Although Pressly has had a tough go of it this season, he still represents a level of upside. Checking with a direct source, Pressly has multiple options to consider and the Twins are just one of them. He is making $14 million this year in the final season of his three-year contract signed with the Houston Astros. After clearing waivers though, he can be signed for the major league minimum. A team may need to do a bit better to secure his services, but he won't cost much of anything. Related: Although the Twins don't represent a level of competitiveness, they do have a potential advantage. Pressly and his family are familiar with the organization and city. Beyond that, he'd immediately assume whatever role he wants in the bullpen. It gives him a level of control he may not have elsehwere. It would be a fun full circle moment if things can fall into place. Slater dealing with a blister

Follow along live for exclusive access and insight from The Athletic's writers as NFL training camps continue this week Imagn Images Imagn Images Rashawn Slater said he's been dealing with a blister on his foot. Said before camp he needed the blister 'carved out,' and there was a hole in his foot. Tried to practice the first two days of camp but decided to sit out after that. Standouts included Mac Jones (he was 12-16), Nick Bosa (he was a persistent pest in team drills) and rookie DT C.J. West, who looked powerful in 1-on-1 pass-blocking drills. Imagn Images Ravens practice just ended. Mark Andrews made some big plays. Penalties erased a number of big plays offensively, including a circus catch in the end zone by DeAndre Hopkins. The Madden 99 Club is a group of players who earn the exclusive '99' rating in the video game. Since 2002, 99 is the highest rating a player can achieve (there were a few 100s awarded by the game in its earlier days). Mike Macdonald will speak post-practice today to confirm the specifics, but regardless, McIntosh is set to miss the 2025 season. Elgton Jenkins on his contract and being available for Packers. The Seahawks are signing rookie DK Kaufman, a former NC State defensive back, I'm told. He'll play running back for the Seahawks — and likely factor into the kick return battle. Kaufman had 469 kick return yards last year and averaged 31.3 yards per kick return. Seattle has a void at kick returner and running back due to Kenny McIntosh's knee injury. Said there were no 'ifs, ands or buts about it' when it came to Denver's commitment.
