Dog owner 'shocked' by 7st mountain breed

BBC News24-07-2025
After her previous dog died during Covid, Laura McFarlane wanted to get another rescue dog, finding one online with a "really sad story".Bobby had had a tough start to life following a hernia operation, part of his ear was missing and his tail was broken. He also looked to be a cockapoo, a typically small dog, which can grow to 11kg (1.7 stone). But when Laura arrived at the rescue centre, she was surprised to see how big the puppy was."We were like, 'that's not our puppy. It's too big'," said Laura, 43, from Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf. A DNA test later revealed that Bobby was not a cockapoo, but instead part Bernese Mountain Dog.He has since grown to weigh seven stone (45kg).
It means Bobby now weighs four times more than she previously expected – and as much as a teenage boy.Laura said that, after collecting Bobby, everywhere they went, he was by far the biggest puppy."We've taken him to a cockapoo café and people have said, 'are you sure he's a cockapoo?'"Others joked that the owners "needed a saddle" for him.Laura said, because they wanted to be prepared for potential health issues, they did a test to find out what breed he was."It turned out he was a Bernedoodle, a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a poodle – we had a bit of a shock when we found that out," she said.Bernese Mountain Dogs are a Swiss breed, and their large size means they were developed for farm work, including pulling carts and as guard dogs.
Bobby weighs about seven stone (45kg), which is roughly the weight of a 13-year-old boy – in contrast, a cockapoo, the breed Laura thought she was originally getting, typically weighs less than a quarter of that."He thinks he's a small dog, so he likes to sit on my lap," she said of some of the challenges of having such a big dog."He's also too heavy to pick up - but we love him to bits. We don't regret it at all," Laura added. She added that Bobby had also had some viral success on social media in recent days."I'm usually posting pictures of him on Facebook, and I think my family was getting pretty bored, so I posted him on TikTok and he went viral – people loved him," Laura said.

Wales ambulance makes 100th journey for end of life patients

An initiative run by the Welsh Ambulance Service which helps patients at the end of their life has made its 100th journey. The "Wish Ambulance" enables terminally ill patients across Wales to have a memory-making last journey to their favourite than 500 off-duty ambulance workers give up their time to transport patients using non-emergency vehicles not in service that week, volunteers transported Annette 'Nettie' Burtenshaw to City Hospice's Forever Flowers Celebration of Life event at Cardiff Castle, where the 64-year-old gave a rousing performance with her beloved Rock Choir. Since its creation in 2019, it has transported patients and their loved ones to concerts, sporting events, birthday parties, cafés, museums and even to the terminally ill man accompanied his daughter down the aisle just six days before he died, while one woman watched her teenage son play football for the final from Penarth, was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2021, and later bone cancer. She said it was "amazeballs" to be the 100th Wish patient."I can't put into words how much it meant to perform again with the choir, and the look on their faces when I turned up and surprised them in my uniform, and with my flag," she said. Ed O'Brian, Clinical Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said reaching the 100th Wish Ambulance journey was a "special moment" for the team."It's a powerful reminder of what kindness, teamwork and compassion can achieve," he added.

Gogglebox favourites Dave and Shirley reveal their future on show ten years on from Channel 4 debut after shock axing that left fans gutted

Gogglebox favourites Dave and Shirley have revealed their future on the show ten years on from their TV debut after a recent shock axing that left fans gutted. The couple have been part of the C4 programme since the sixth series, when they joined the cast in 2015. Since then, Dave and Shirley have become huge fan favourites with their top banter and hilarious comments about the telly shows that they are watching. The 25th series of Gogglebox wrapped up in May earlier this year and viewers are desperate for it to make a return to their screens on a Friday night. The pair, who are from Caerphilly in Wales, are currently living their best lives on holiday and shared a snap from their travels on Instagram. While many rushed to the comments section to share the love, one fan asked: 'When you starting filming for Gogglebox again?' And many will be happy to know that they will be back on our screens very soon. 'End of August mate won't be long,' they replied. Another wrote: 'Love photo of you both, can't wait to see you back on tv. Luvya lot's.' 'Lovely photo of you both love you two on Gogglebox you make me smile.' 'My favourites looking fabulous.' Just last month a popular Gogglebox duo announced that they were axed from the Channel 4 show in an emotional statement to fans. Scots Roisin and Joe, who joined the programme in February 2022, shared the news on TikTok, which left viewers absolutely heartbroken. Roisin said in a statement posted on her page: 'After three and a half years of sitting on the sofa Channel 4 have decided it's time for Joe and I to stretch out legs and have not asked us back for season 26. 'Therefore we are leaving the Gogglebox family. The couple have revealed that they will be filming for the next series later this month - meaning that they are still part of the C4 show Others rushed to the comments section to share how much they loved their holiday snap 'We couldn't be more grateful to Studio Lambert for the opportunity, the experience has actually been so mad and we will miss watching TV with you all on Friday nights! 'It's been an honor to represent Scotland as some of the first Scottish people on the show and prove we don't actually need subtitles.' She added: 'A special shout out to our crew of past and present, Jason, Ayse, Rich, Eilish, Ewan, Evie, Seve, David, Stef, AJ and Odin. 'Also to Harriet for always answering the phone, anytime of the day or night. 'We have made friends for life and after filming every week for years, you have become like our family! 'We could not have asked for better people to work with and we will miss you immensely. 'A huge thank you to everyone who has watched us, met us, and supported us during this experience, it for sure has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. 'Time to watch TV in silence for a bit and put down the popcorn. 'Miss you already, Roisin and Joe.' Gogglebox hit our screens in 2013 and since then, there has been 25 series and seven celebrity seasons. There has not been a confirmation date for the next season, but it could likely air in September or October, as that is when they usually air.

Rescued kittens in Wolverhampton named Ozzy and Sharon

Two rescued new-born kittens found covered in maggots next to two dead siblings have been named Ozzy and feline pair, thought to be about a week old, were found by "a kind-hearted lady" in her garden in the Whitmore Reans area of Wolverhampton, with no mother around, and were "in a very bad way".Both are being helped by Wings and Paws Rescue in Wolverhampton, with a spokesperson saying: "They're only a week or so old - how could we say no to helping them?"They are now being hand-reared with our very experienced fosterer and are already doing much better." "Keep fighting little ones, we've got you now," the spokesperson said. The pair's fosterer said she had struggled to find names for them that she hadn't used before."We have about eight Hollys," she said."I thought it would be nice to honour Ozzy by naming the kittens after him and Sharon. "The last lot were after Peppa Pig's friends and new baby sister." Follow BBC Wolverhampton & Black Country on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
