A political row has erupted after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin alleged biased allocation of central funds favouring Sanskrit over other Indian classical languages, including Tamil.
Citing a media report and voicing strong criticism on social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, "Sanskrit gets the crores; Tamil and other South Indian languages get nothing but crocodile tears."
The criticism follows a media report that quoted the reply to an RTI query, which said that the Union Government allocated Rs 2,532.59 crore between 2014-15 and 2024-25 for the promotion of Sanskrit.
In contrast, a total of only Rs 147.56 crore was spent on all five other classical Indian languages combined--Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia--over the same period, claimed the report.
MH Jawahirullah, the president of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), alleged that the funding disparity revealed a discriminatory and biased approach by the BJP-led Union Government and called for urgent corrective measures.
He said, "This amount is 17 times higher than the total funding of ₹147.56 crore allocated for all five other classical languages combined, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia, according to data obtained through an RTI query, as reported by an English daily. On average, Sanskrit has received ₹230.24 crore per year, whereas the other five classical languages have received only ₹13.41 crore per year on average, revealing the Union BJP government's discriminatory and biased approach."
He urged the Centre to provide equitable funding and fair recognition for Tamil and other classical languages.
"Recently, Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah stated in Madurai that Tamil is the "best language in India". But these statistics expose that such remarks are mere lip service without substance. I urge the Union Government to immediately provide due recognition, equitable funding, and developmental programs for Tamil and all other classical languages," he said.

French tourist raped in Udaipur after being lured from party; accused absconding
JAIPUR A 30-year-old French tourist was allegedly raped in Rajasthan's Udaipur after being lured from a party by an employee of an event management company. The woman, who had arrived in Udaipur from Delhi on June 22, was staying at a hotel in the Ambamata area. On Monday night, she attended a party at a restaurant near Tiger Hills, where she met the accused, identified as Pushp Raj. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused engaged her in conversation and offered to show her around the city. 'He later took her to his rented apartment in Sukher locality, where he raped her,' it said. The victim said she repeatedly asked him to drop her back, but the accusedrefused. Her mobile phone had run out of battery, leaving her unable to call for help. The woman later admitted herself to a private hospital in Udaipur, where hospital staff alerted the police. She filed a formal complaint from the hospital, and a case was registered under Section 64(1) (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Badgaon police station. Police officials stated that the French national is in stable condition and continues to receive medical treatment. The French Embassy in New Delhi has been informed of the incident. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest the accused, who is currently absconding. The Opposition Congress has warned of possible 'international ramifications', especially as the United States has already issued a travel advisory, urging caution to women travellers in six Indian States due to rising rape cases. The Congress stated that Rajasthan may soon be added to such advisories. 'Women feel unsafe' Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the incident had exposed the deteriorating law and order situation in Rajasthan. 'Women across the State feel unsafe, but the Bharatiya Janata Party government remains indifferent,' he said.

TCS office campus bldg plan sanctioned, posts Mamata

In this phase, 9 lakh sq ft of world-class infrastructure, including an 11-storey office tower, will be developed, creating employment for 5,000 individuals, the CM said. The second phase will add another 15 lakh sq ft, generating 20,000 more jobs. Upon completion, the campus will comprise 24 lakh sqft of built-up space and create 25,000 direct employment opportunities.
