New Balance recruits Rosalía as new global ambassador
Marking the partnership, the Grammy-award-winning artist stars in a five-part cinematic campaign that opens with the musician at the New Balance headquarters in Boston, leading to the unveiling of a custom painting of the debut New Balance x Rosalía logo.
The campaign will also feature the latest lifestyle shoe from New Balance, the 204L, which offers the low-profile look of retro runners in all-over suede with 2000's tech, according to a press release.
The new New Balancce 204L will release globally in July through New Balance retail channels.
'My love for fashion and design has only grown over the years. I've always been a fan of New Balance, and that's why working with the brand is especially exciting for me. I love how New Balance has brought sport and culture closer together in recent years and I couldn't be more excited and grateful to be an ambassador,' said Rosalía.
Born in Sant Cugat del Vallès in 1992, Rosalía is a two-time Grammy and 12-time Latin Grammy Award-winning artist and producer, known for her atypical pop songs. The singer shot to fame in 2018 with her sophomore album "El Mal Querer". The record earned her a Grammy and eight Latin Grammys, including Album of the Year, and marking her as the first Spanish-language artist nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys.
Four years later, she released her "Motomami album, which the multi-hyphenate wrote, performed, recorded, and produced, before taking the record on a sold-out world tour.
'Rosalia reflects the celebration of independence that the New Balance brand has represented since 1906. We are honored to welcome her into our family with the goal of personifying her creativity, unique individuality, and courage to defy convention. Rosalia is much more than a globally renowned cultural icon. She doesn't follow trends, she creates them. Together, we will rewrite the rules through a coauthored strategy focusing on product and storytelling – being atypical is what unites us,' said Chris Davis, brand president and chief marketing officer at New Balance, whose other celebrity ambassadors include Jaden Smith, Storm Reid, Selena Samuela, Kawhi Leonard, Sydney McLaughlin and Coco Gauff.

Elon Musk, Robert A. Heinlein and the urgent call to colonize space
On April 28, Elon Musk asked his artificial intelligence Grok to define itself. As usual, the Tesla CEO's messaging was cryptic. His posts on X (formerly Twitter), and even the names of his children, often feel like riddles, decipherable only to those in the know. But for newcomers, this moment of self-definition offered a rare clue: The name Grok was an homage to science fiction novelist Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988). Heinlein, along with Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) and Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), is regarded as one of the "Big Three" of the Golden Age of American science fiction, which spanned from the late 1930s to the 1960s. In his 1961 bestseller Stranger in a Strange Land, a Martian uses the word "grok" to describe his way of understanding Earth. Musk echoed the spirit of the novel in a February 2025 post on X, writing: "The word 'grok' means to fully and profoundly understand something." Heinlein was trained as both an engineer and a military officer. A key figure in hard science fiction – a genre rooted in scientific and technological rigor – he also had a strong interest in psychology. In a 1947 lecture, he regretted that "too many so-called science fiction stories forget about human beings and their problems." Stranger in a Strange Land follows a human born on Mars and raised in Martian culture as he struggles to adapt to life on Earth. Gérard Klein, a leading French science fiction editor, described the novel as a philosophical tale in the tradition of Montesquieu's Lettres persanes (Persian Letters, 1721). Confronted with political intrigue and human greed, the protagonist, Valentine Michael Smith, is baffled by the Earthlings' obsession with power and property.

Francis Ford Coppola gives update amid reports of hospitalisation
ADVERTISEMENT Following reports that Francis Ford Coppola had been admitted on Tuesday to the Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in Rome, the acclaimed American director has released an update on his health. The director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now and his representative have released a statement revealing that Coppola underwent a non-emergency cardiac procedure in the Italian capital. 'Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure' - performed by renowned Italian-born cardiologist Dr. Andrea Natale - and is 'resting nicely.' 'There was not an emergency. He went to the hospital in a car. He had a scheduled appointment.' Coppola, 86, has been a patient of Natale for more than 30 years, the representative added. 'All is well.' Coppola also posted a photograph of himself on Instagram, saying: 'Da Dada (what my kids call me) is fine, taking an opportunity while in Rome to do the update of my 30-year-old afib procedure with its inventor, a great Italian doctor — Dr. Andrea Natale,' it said. The term 'a-fib' is short for atrial fibrillation, a type of abnormal heart rhythm. Coppola was in Italy to promote his latest (and extremely polarising) movie Megalopolis , a $120 million self-funded production which premiered in Cannes last year. It had a special screening at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro. In our (less than glowing) review of Megalopolis , we said: 'It's all a mad jumble of heteroclitic strands that defy basic storytelling and dramatic coherence. Think Cloud Atlas by way of Southland Tales . And even that sounds better than Megalopolis actually is. (...) While this futurist fantasy sounds so insane it could border on genius, don't delude yourselves into thinking that Megalopolis is one of those ahead-of-its-time / bless-this-mess future classics made by a filmmaker with nothing left to lose. Just because the veteran director behind such classics as The Godfather , Apocalypse Now and The Conversation decides to deliver his go-for-broke magnum opus, doesn't make it any less of an indulgent folly that borders on nonsensical.' Still, we're glad he's well.

Dolly Parton becomes Guinness World Records icon
As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, Guinness World Records has honoured US country star Dolly Parton as one of their icons. The company – which lists world record achievements – has given Parton, 79, an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee, celebrating the fact that the 'Jolene' singer holds 11 record-breaking titles. These include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. Parton was also the first country singer to be nominated for the EGOT – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – aka the 'Grand Slam of showbusiness'. Craig Glenday, editor in chief at Guinness World Records, said: 'Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extends far beyond the musical world.' He added: 'There are so many projects close to her heart – poverty relief, education, medical research and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign – and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propels Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her.' Parton's charitable and philanthropic work includes the Dollywood Foundation, founded in 1988. The institution champions the education of children in her home state of Tennessee. As for her literacy initiative, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, it has distributed more than 285 million books globally since 1995. Besides her music career, Parton has starred in films like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and earned two original song Oscar nominations for '9 to 5', and 'Travelin' Thru from Transamerica' from the film Transamerica. In June, it was announced that she would be honoured in November with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award – an Oscar statuette presented to Hollywood figures renowned for 'promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities'. Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John.
