Egypt showcases progress toward health equity at Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week
Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, took part in a high-level session titled 'Health Equity: New Priorities for Impact' during Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week 2025, held in the UAE from 15 to 17 April.
In his remarks, Abdel Ghaffar presented Egypt's vision for achieving universal and equitable healthcare, affirming that health is a fundamental human right. He underscored the state's commitment to ensuring that all citizens have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare services, regardless of geography or socioeconomic status.
The minister noted that Egypt's approach to developing its health sector is grounded in three core values: equity, sustainability, and human dignity. These principles align with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. He explained that health equity means enabling all individuals to attain the highest possible standard of health by removing barriers and creating equal opportunities.
Abdel Ghaffar outlined Egypt's comprehensive strategy to promote health equity, which includes ensuring fairness in service provision, addressing the social determinants of health, integrating health considerations into all public policies, leveraging digital data for better decision-making, and engaging in global health initiatives.
He also reviewed Egypt's decades-long journey toward building a comprehensive health insurance system, from the early introduction of public sector employee coverage in the 1960s to the launch of the Universal Health Insurance System in 2018. This system, now being rolled out in phases, aims to achieve nationwide coverage by 2030.
Emphasizing the importance of primary healthcare as the frontline of the health system, Abdel Ghaffar highlighted national initiatives such as 'Decent Life,' which focuses on upgrading local health units and expanding access to essential services. He also noted Egypt's advancements in digital transformation, including the creation of more than 2.8 million electronic family health records as part of the universal insurance scheme.
On the public health front, the minister pointed to several major achievements. Egypt has been officially declared free from malaria and Hepatitis C, and remains polio-free due to its robust immunization programs. He reported that basic vaccination coverage has surpassed 95%, supported by the introduction of new vaccines and strengthened disease surveillance systems.
Abdel Ghaffar went on to highlight several of Egypt's key national health initiatives, such as the '100 Million Healthy Lives' campaign, programs targeting maternal and child health, early screening for genetic diseases in newborns, care services for senior citizens, mental health support systems, premarital screening programs, and chronic disease prevention efforts, particularly for diabetes and obesity.
In closing, the minister reaffirmed Egypt's position as an active regional and global health partner. He spotlighted initiatives like 'Africa's Cancer Care' and 'Healthy Heart for Africa,' which have reached millions across the continent and trained thousands of healthcare professionals. He also emphasized Egypt's focus on environmentally sustainable healthcare, including the development of green hospitals and the deployment of mobile medical units to reach underserved areas.

Egypt to declare elimination of leprosy, targets ‘zero cases' by 2030
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Tuesday chaired a meeting to review the government's preparations to declare the elimination of leprosy, directing that efforts be intensified to reach a goal of 'zero leprosy cases' and provide care for those who have recovered. During the meeting, Madbouly said the government would be able to eliminate leprosy and declare Egypt free of the disease, following previous public health successes. 'Just as the Egyptian state succeeded, and even became a global leader, in eliminating the Hepatitis C virus, as well as Virus B, malaria, and polio, among others, we will be able to eliminate leprosy and declare Egypt free of it,' Madbouly said. He explained that focusing on health services is a fundamental aspect of achieving sustainable development, stressing the need to strengthen policies that ensure a healthy life for individuals and help recovered patients reintegrate into society. Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar outlined the ministry's efforts, explaining that its vision is to 'reach zero leprosy cases by 2030.' He added that the ministry is adopting a methodology consistent with the global approach, based on early detection and treatment of cases through the Leprosy Control Department's 27 specialised clinics, in addition to providing psychological and social support to those affected. Abdel Ghaffar noted that the policy of isolating leprosy patients will be abolished, as the disease becomes non-contagious after the first dose of treatment. 'Leprosy is a skin disease like any other skin disease,' he said. He explained that leprosy colonies have been closed worldwide and that patients currently in the Abu Zaabal and Amreya colonies in Egypt have recovered, with no active cases requiring isolation. They can receive services at any general hospital. He confirmed that the name 'leprosy clinics' will be replaced by 'specialised dermatology clinics.' The Governor of Alexandria, Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed, confirmed that the roughly 26 patients at the Amreya colony 'have been fully cured and treated for the complications of the disease and also rehabilitated.' The Governor of Qalyubia, Ayman Attia, explained that patient numbers at the Abu Zaabal hospital are 'dwindling because the hospital is not admitting new cases for hospitalisation due to the change in treatment methods.' Regarding social support, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsi reported that a social survey of patients was conducted, with the majority receiving cash support from the 'Takaful and Karama' programme. She affirmed the ministry's commitment to rehabilitating capable individuals and providing them with suitable employment opportunities. At the conclusion of the meeting, the prime minister directed officials to 'intensify efforts to reach the goal of zero leprosy cases,' and to 'provide full care for the recovered, and the required social cash support.' The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny, the governors of Alexandria and Qalyubia, and other relevant officials.

Health ministry outlines summer medical plan for Egypt's North Coast
Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population has detailed a comprehensive medical security plan for the North Coast to ensure readiness during the current holidays and the 2025 summer season, as large numbers of citizens visit the popular coastal area. In a statement on Monday, the ministry outlined the measures being taken after Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received a detailed report on the plan from the Matrouh Health Directorate. Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the plan covers public health measures, inspections of facilities, the establishment of a central operations room, and resource management to handle the seasonal influx of visitors. The plan includes preventive inspections of tourist facilities, food production and service establishments, health clubs, water stations and sewage networks. It also involves monitoring infection control measures and occupational health and safety standards at both public and private health facilities in the coastal cities and tourist villages. To enhance hospital and staff readiness, a refresher training programme has been organised for hospital managers, while emergency staff have been trained to handle infectious diseases and cases of poisoning. All medical teams, including supporting staff, have been vaccinated against Hepatitis B, the spokesperson added. Resources have been bolstered with the creation of a backup storage facility for vaccines, medicines and medical supplies at Marina Central Hospital, where medical isolation rooms have also been designated. A number of mobile clinics are also stationed in the area, and the Presidential Initiative for Women's Health vehicle will be present throughout the summer. A central operations room has been established to run 24/7, linked to the directorate's emergency room and the ministry's central crisis room to monitor the plan's implementation. According to Islam Assaf, the Health Undersecretary in Matrouh, all hospitals are mandated to accept and provide immediate emergency care to all patients. Protocols are in place for coordinating transfers for specialised cases, and hospitals are also operating evening clinics as per regulations.
