Mavericks' Cooper Flagg ranked among the top small forwards for 2025-26 season

USA Todaya day ago
After debuting last month in the NBA Summer League, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg is projected to be among the top small forwards for the 2025-26 season.
Flagg logged two appearances with the Mavericks, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points and four rebounds in his final appearance on July 12 against the San Antonio Spurs.
The No. 1 pick logged 62 minutes in the desert, showcasing each element of his game that made him so highly touted out of Duke. He has everything needed to help the Mavericks now, a key reason why HoopsHype ranked him 20th on its list of top small forwards for next season.
Flagg has fantastic size and length (he measured in at 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot wingspan at the NBA Draft Combine), the skill to handle the ball and knock down tough shots from all three levels, great athleticism and, maybe most importantly, elite competitiveness, which should help him make a huge impact on the defensive end, possibly as early as in his rookie season.
Flagg is viewed as a generational prospect on the court and enters next season with tremendous hype as the front-runner to win Rookie of the Year. He is projected to play a key role as a first-year player, and the Mavericks are eager to see him take the court.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said the team is going to ask a lot of him during the upcoming season to maximize his development. They will experiment with him playing on and off the ball to ensure he can impact games in various ways.
Kidd believes Flagg landed in a good situation with the Mavericks, given their mixture of veterans and young players. The organization is hopeful that Flagg can have a smooth transition to the NBA and help the team make another deep playoff run.

Dereck Lively's leap: Rising into top-10 center conversation

Dereck Lively's leap: Rising into top-10 center conversation originally appeared on The Sporting News The Dallas Mavericks didn't just draft a young center two years ago—they invested in their future. Despite an injury-riddled sophomore season in 2024–25, 21-year-old Dereck Lively II showed flashes of being a franchise cornerstone. Now, following offseason surgery to clean up bone spurs in his right foot, Lively is back on track and expected to be fully healthy for training camp. For a young big man, the ceiling is sky-high. At 7'1' with a 7'7' wingspan, Lively has already proven to be a defensive difference-maker. He alters shots at the rim, runs the floor with energy, and provides Dallas with a true anchor in the paint. While his sophomore year was disrupted by injuries, his presence when healthy was undeniable. The Mavericks' defense consistently looked sharper with him on the court, and teammates praised his communication and willingness to do the dirty work. With his talent, size, and now full health, Lively has the potential to be in the top-10 center conversation by the end of the upcoming NBA season. His ability to impact both ends—protecting the rim defensively while finishing lobs and cleaning the glass offensively—gives him a path to reach that elite level. The key addition to his development? Playing next to Anthony Davis. Dallas' blockbuster trade for the veteran star now pairs Lively with one of the greatest defensive players of this generation. Davis, who will begin the year at his natural power forward position, forms what could be the league's best defensive frontcourt alongside Lively. The combination of Davis's versatility and Lively's length provides Dallas with a terrifying duo capable of erasing mistakes and locking down the paint against any opponent. For Lively, the opportunity is priceless. Learning daily from Davis will sharpen his instincts, improve his timing, and push him to elevate his game. For Dallas, it could mean the foundation of a defensive identity strong enough to fuel a postseason run. Lively may be coming off foot surgery, but by season's end, he won't just be seen as a promising young center. He'll be recognized as one of the league's best, anchoring the Mavericks' defense and establishing himself as a cornerstone piece for the franchise's future.

Two Lakers preseason games will be on national television

A little over six weeks from now, the Los Angeles Lakers will open their preseason schedule for the 2025-26 NBA season. That schedule will become a bit hectic, as it features a set of back-to-back games and a stretch of four games in six days, but it will give fans an opportunity to see the intriguing roster the team has put together before wins and losses start to officially count. Two of those preseason contests will be shown nationwide on ESPN, which will allow Lakers fans outside of the greater Los Angeles area to tune in live. The team's Oct. 5 matchup against the Golden State Warriors and its Oct. 15 game against the Dallas Mavericks will be televised on the network. These are obviously two marquee matchups. The first will feature Stephen Curry, and the second will give Luka Doncic the opportunity to take on his former teammates, as well as allow LeBron James to take the court against former teammates Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell and Max Christie. The Lakers' regular season begins on Oct. 21 at Arena versus the Warriors. That game will be shown on NBC. Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever guard reportedly tweaked ankle during workout

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is working her way back from a right groin injury that has sidelined her for 13 consecutive games, but it was revealed Wednesday she suffered another injury during her recovery. Clark, who last suited up for the Fever on July 15, suffered a mild bone bruise in her left ankle during an individual workout session in Phoenix on Aug. 7, according to The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network. Clark tweaked her ankle the same day the team lost guards Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) to season-ending injuries in the Fever's 95-60 loss to the Mercury. Ten days later, the Fever also lost guard Sophie Cunningham (MCL tear) for the season on Aug. 17, further depleting the team's backcourt. There's no timeline for Clark's return. Fieldhouse Files was the first to report the news of Clark's ankle injury. On Wednesday, head coach Stephanie White confirmed Clark has not returned to practice, which would mark a crucial step in her ramp-up process. "Until (Clark) can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, we're really status quo," White said. "You never wanna see injuries happen, first and foremost," White added, referring to Cunningham. "You hate it when it's anyone, let alone the third season-ending injury that we've seen this year. But like I told our team ... yes, we've been dealt a crappy hand, but we have to play it." Clark, who previously missed time with a left quad and a left groin injury, has been sidelined 22 of the Fever's 35 games this season. Indiana is 8-5 with Clark in the lineup and 11-11 without her on the floor. The 2024 Rookie of the Year is averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and a career-high 8.8 assists in 13 games this season. Her assists average is the second-highest in the league, behind Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas (9.0). Caitlin Clark injury timeline The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
