The California Public Employees' Retirement System, known as CalPERS, has made some big changes to where it puts its money. CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the US, managing over $540 billion to support retirement benefits for more than 2 million California public workers.CalPERS quietly shifted some of its biggest investments in early 2025 as it sold more than 5 million shares of Apple , a company whose stock dropped 11 percent in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, it bought more shares in Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and McDonald's.Apple has been struggling in the market lately. On top of that, President Donald Trump recently criticized Apple for building iPhones in India instead of the US, even threatening a 25 percent tariff on iPhones made in foreign factories. That could make Apple devices more expensive for American buyers. CalPERS still owns plenty of Apple shares at 34.7 million, but decided it was time to trim back.CalPERS increased its stake in:CalPERS said it doesn't make decisions based on short-term news. 'Our public assets investments are index-oriented and optimized using systematic and quantitative investment strategies, not driven by any single period's events,' the fund said in a statement. In other words, CalPERS takes the long view, using data and strategy to guide its moves. There's more going on behind the scenes. Dan Bienvenue, who helped lead CalPERS' investment decisions for over 20 years, left in April. Now, CalPERS is looking for a new Deputy Chief Investment Officer to manage its public stock and bond investments. The new leader will play a big role in shaping where CalPERS puts its money next.'The DCIO will provide thought leadership, identify emerging trends, develop forward-thinking investment approaches, ensure a strong governance and organizational culture exists for investment decision making, ensure alignment with CalPERS long-term strategic objectives, and coordinate inclusion of public market asset class research, analysis, and information into Total Fund investment decision making and drive our CalPERS mission,' the job posting states. For everyday people, especially public employees in California, these decisions matter. CalPERS' job is to keep retirement funds growing safely. These investment moves show how the fund is navigating a changing economy, political pressure, and global tech trends, all while staying focused on the long term.

...You'll have to take the Tequila Express

Tourism used to be a simple equation. You went somewhere, checked out views, temples, eateries, and soaked in whatever else the place had to offer. But, now, sights and shopping aren't enough. You need a side of spectacle. Think vibes, curated playlists, mood lighting, the right Instagram filter. And if you've got extra dosh, throw in a themed train ride - with a tequila bar - that could make a mariachi weep. Hop on to the Tequila Express. This isn't some novelty name - it's a real train chugging across Mexico's agave-covered terrain. First launched in 1997 to kickstart 'tequila tourism', it took a break and is now back - refurbished, refuelled, and ready to serve 1.2 mn tipsy tourists a year. And this isn't just transport. It's a full-blown rolling fiesta connecting Guadalajara with Tequila, Mexico, complete with enlarged windows, soft lighting, piped-in mariachi music, and flat-screens flashing tacos and distilleries - basically, Agave Netflix while you sip your third shot before noon. Meanwhile, rival trains like the Jose Cuervo Express charge even more to wobble through the same cactus-studded scenery. The best bit? Tequila is now a Unesco World Heritage site. So, yes, getting sloshed on a train officially counts as cultural enrichment. Moral of the story: It's not where you go, but how you sell the ride. Just add lime and call it heritage. Elevate your knowledge and leadership skills at a cost cheaper than your daily tea. Everything 'e' won't make you a millionaire. Repo rate cut offers hope for housing recovery, but bank transmission holds the key

Anuj Puri, Chairman of ANAROCK Group, noted, 'Lower repo rates make home loans cheaper, improving affordability for buyers. Affordable housing has seen its sales share fall sharply from 38% in 2019 to just 18% in 2024. A 19% decline in unsold stock, however, signals pent-up end-user demand that could now be unlocked—if banks pass on the benefits swiftly.' The decision is also expected to bring down developers' borrowing costs, offering a boost to project viability and completion. However, Puri cautioned that global trade tensions and input cost inflation may offset some of the positive effects, especially in the luxury and commercial segments. Ashok Kapur, Chairman of Krishna Group and Krisumi Corporation, welcomed the rate cut, saying it would enhance buyer confidence and spur demand across housing categories. 'Combined with earlier rate cuts, today's move means borrowing costs have dropped by 100 basis points since last year. This will encourage more homebuyers to act,' he said. Avneesh Sood, Director, Eros Group, said the move is timely but stressed the importance of efficient rate transmission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo 'Affordable and mid-income housing, hit by a 28% fall in sales, will respond to this rate cut—but only if the benefits reach borrowers. The cut also improves project feasibility by lowering working capital costs, especially in Tier 2 and 3 cities. We risk losing momentum unless this opportunity is capitalized on quickly,' he added. Jaypee Infratech Executive Director Jash Panchamia highlighted that banks already offering home loans below 8% may further reduce rates, making real estate investment more attractive. While the repo rate cut is widely welcomed, its success now hinges on how effectively banks lower lending rates and how developers manage rising input costs amid global uncertainties.
