Family TSA lines launch around the U.S., including at this popular SoCal airport
The Families on the Fly program began its roll-out at select airports this summer, including at John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
Parents need not have TSA PreCheck to take advantage of the dedicated lanes, which often have shorter lines and allow families to move through security without feeling rushed or like they are inconveniencing their fellow passengers.
'When families arrive at John Wayne Airport, they will find a specially designated lane for them at the centrally located Checkpoint B,' said Jason Pantages, Transportation Security Administration federal security director for John Wayne Airport, at a news conference Monday. 'With Southern California being one of the top tourist destinations in the U.S. for vacationing families, I am excited that we can now expedite their screening process and enhance their overall airport experience.'
John Wayne Airport is a popular travel hub for families on vacation, thanks in part to its proximity to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. In addition to the new family TSA lane, airport officials also unveiled a new lactation pod in the Terminal C baggage claim area to provide mothers with a place to nurse in private.
'As a mom who nursed two babies, I know the stress of traveling when babies get hungry,' Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said in a statement. 'I'm excited that we now offer a private, clean, comfortable space for moms to nurse before flights at JWA to reduce the chaos of traveling with kids.'
Although California officials predicted that the state would experience a 'Trump slump' in tourism this year due to the president's tariff policies, a slowdown in visitors has not materialized at John Wayne.
The Orange County airport reported a 3.1% year-over-year increase in passengers in May, while California airports overall reported a very slight 0.6% year-over-year dip in passengers in May, the latest month for which data are available.
The decrease in tourism to the Golden State is forecast to be driven by a 9.2% year-over-year drop in international visitors, according to the state's nonprofit tourism marketing agency, Visit California. The agency predicts this change will be driven by the 'impact of higher tariffs on the global economy and negative sentiment toward the U.S. due to the administration's trade policies.'
Only 3% of passengers at John Wayne are international, largely insulating the airport from the potential effect of such a slump. At Los Angeles International Airport, where almost a third of passengers are international, there was a 4.3% decrease in travelers in May.
The TSA began launching its new family-friendly lanes in July, the middle of the busy summer travel season. As part of the Families on the Fly program, TSA is also offering a discount on TSA PreCheck enrollments for families: Buy one enrollment and you get $15 off the second one.

Orlando International Launches Dedicated TSA Family Lanes to Ease Travel With Kids
If you take a look around, you will find strollers, little luggage and stuffed animals. Orlando International Airport is full of families. 'Kids want to go on trips, kids want to see Disney World,' said visitor Tatiana Terry. That is how the story usually goes for many: fun at the parks, frustration at the airport. 'We come every year, and so we're excited to go through the family lane this year, because we've never had an easy travel out of MCO before,' Terry said. But today was different for her group. They went through TSA's new dedicated family lanes. 'It's really an option for those traveling with children, 12 and under,' said Michael Silata, Assistant Federal Security Director for MCO. Silata says the new lanes benefit everyone. 'For the other travelers, it actually helps out the other lanes, because it helps to decongest those lanes. So, for example, like the larger items of the strollers and so on in those lanes,' he explained. Over the busy summer months, Orlando International's average wait time has been hovering around 10 minutes. With these new lanes, the hope is that it moves even faster, family or not. 'I feel like, not saying that they do, I'm slowing them down, because I'm like ok come on gotta get your backpacks off and put them in the bucket,' said visitor Connie Fulton. You will find the family lanes at all security checkpoints across Orlando International. Launching the lanes here was a natural choice given the number of families. Airport staff believe MCO processes more car seats and baby strollers than any other airport in the world. 'With two kids it is hard, it is very hard,' Fulton added. Right now, the lanes are also available at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. Under this new program, families will also be eligible for discounted TSA PreCheck. This new program is part of TSA's push to modernize travel. Customs issues strong warning: Travelers in Florida could lose these ‘privileges'
A new warning from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was issued this week after an incident involving a traveler at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The federal agency reminded the public that it can revoke the 'privilege' of expedited entry for certain 'trusted' international travelers if they violate the rules of a popular program that was expanded and promoted during the Trump administration. This program, which benefits travelers from about 20 countries, recently added El Salvador, as a recognition by the U.S. government of president Nayib Bukele's support for large-scale deportation operations. The CBP alert was prompted by a recent case at Fort Lauderdale airport, where a traveler enrolled in the Global Entry program attempted to bring in five grams of MDMA, a synthetic drug also known as ecstasy. 'A (former) Global Entry traveler at FLL International thought 5 grams of MDMA could slip past CBP. Our K9 squad had other plans,' wrote Carlos C. Martel, CBP's Director of Field Operations in Miami and Tampa, on social media. The agency shared the message with a clear warning: 'Take note. Your Trusted Traveler privileges can and will be revoked if you fail to follow the law.' The Global Entry program is part of the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) offered by the U.S. government to facilitate the entry of low-risk travelers. Applicants for Global Entry undergo rigorous and recurring screening by U.S. authorities, including an in-person interview with a CBP officer before initial enrollment. Membership costs $120, is applied for online, and is valid for five years. Benefits include access to TSA PreCheck, which allows faster security screenings at U.S. airports. However, CBP warns: 'To maintain low-risk traveler status, Global Entry members must not violate any of the program's terms and conditions. Violations will result in appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler's membership privileges.' It's important to note that Global Entry membership does not exempt travelers from visa requirements to enter the United States.
