Scuffle reportedly breaks out at Royal Opera House after Palestine flag unfurled
The incident took place during a performance of Il Trovatore on Saturday, with video footage circulating online showing people backstage attempting to take the flag off the unidentified performer as he shook it.
A spokesperson for the Royal Ballet and Opera said: 'The display of the flag was an unauthorised action by the artist.
'It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and is a wholly inappropriate act.'
In one of the videos, the audience could be heard applauding and cheering while the man was shaking the flag, before one audience member says 'oh my god' as a person attempts to take the flag off him.
The incident came on the closing night of an 11-night run of the production, which was a four-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi.
One poster on X, who claimed to have been a member of the audience, said: 'Extraordinary scenes at the Royal Opera House tonight.
'During the curtain call for Il Trovatore one of the background artists came on stage waving a Palestine flag. Just stood there, no bowing or shouting. Someone off stage kept trying to take it off him. Incredible.'
It comes as a large number of performers show their support for the people of Palestine amid the war in Gaza.
Numerous musical artists at this year's Glastonbury Festival offered messages of support during their sets, including Kneecap, Bob Vylan, Wolf Alice, and Amyl And The Sniffers.
During her band's set Wolf Alice singer Ellie Rowsell told the crowd at the Other Stage: 'Whilst we have the stage for just a little bit longer, we want to express our solidarity with the people of Palestine.
'No-one should ever be afraid to do that.'
Following their performances, Kneecap and Bob Vylan faced an investigation into their sets by Avon and Somerset Police.
During Bob Vylan's performance, rapper Bobby Vylan, whose real name is thought to be Pascal Foster-Robinson, 34, chanted 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)', while a member of Belfast rap group Kneecap joked fans should 'start a riot' outside his bandmate's upcoming court appearance.
The investigation into Kneecap's performance at the Somerset festival has since been dropped by police who said they would take 'no further action' as there was 'insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction for any offence'.

Gary Lineker reveals he WAS sacked by BBC in talks after antisemitism row
Gary Lineker left the BBC earlier this year after sharing an antisemetic post on his social media account and has now revealed that his early departure was enforced upon him Gary Lineker has confirmed that it was the BBC 's decision, rather than his own, for him to leave the corporation early after the Match of the Day presenter shared an antisemitic post on his social media. Lineker, 64, shared a pro-Palestine video which was accompanied by a rat emoji earlier this year. That led to an outpouring of anger and calls for the BBC to sack Lineker instead of allowing the former England striker to see out the remainder of his contract. It was announced in May that Lineker would leave the BBC at the end of the 2024-25 season, with the popular presenter stating that "stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action." But in a new interview with The New World, Lineker has revealed what really happened prior to his exit. When he was asked if leaving was his choice or a case of 'quit or be quitted', he replied: 'The latter.' Reflecting on the incident, he said: 'I missed it [the rat emoji]. To be honest, I wouldn't have understood the connotations anyway until it was pointed out to me. I genuinely didn't see it. I'm not an idiot. I may not have known it was an antisemitic trope, but I would have wondered why someone had put a rat there. Why would you ever conflate a rodent with a human? 'I wouldn't do that on purpose – it would be the biggest act of self-harm ever. But, yeah, it was a tough couple of days.' Lineker, who was due to front the BBC's coverage of the FA Cup in the new season and the 2026 World Cup, swiftly removed the post and issued a public apology. That wasn't enough, though, and the decision was made for Lineker to leave the corporation early rather than continue appearing in the 2025-26 season. In a statement released at the time, Lineker apologised again, saying: ' Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio. 'I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything antisemitic – it goes against everything I stand for. 'However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.' Ozzy Osbourne's funeral procession to pass through Birmingham city centre
Ozzy Osbourne's funeral cortege is to pass through his home city of Birmingham on Wednesday. The hearse will travel along Broad Street to Black Sabbath Bridge and the Black Sabbath bench – the sites of thousands of messages, floral tributes and vigils following the metal star's death last week at the age of 76 – at 1pm BST. Lord Mayor Zafar Iqbal said: 'It was important to the city that we support a fitting, dignified tribute ahead of a private family funeral. We know how much this moment will mean to his fans.' The Osbourne family has paid for the event and all associated costs, and Osbourne's wife Sharon and children Kelly and Jack – possibly among his other children – will follow the procession before the private funeral later in the day, the details of which have not been made public. The local brass band Bostin Brass will soundtrack the procession, with members of Black Sabbath and the musician Yungblud thought to be taking roles. Fans at home will be able to watch the procession via an ongoing live stream of the Sabbath bench. Fans from across the world – including the Canadian R&B megastar Drake, who was passing through the city on tour – have travelled to Birmingham to pay their respects to Osbourne. Iqbal said that he had been moved by accompanying fans in a line to sign a book of condolences, and that Osbourne had put 'Birmingham on the map. He put Aston on the map.' In June, Osbourne and Black Sabbath were given the Freedom of the City ahead of their Back to the Beginning gig, a mammoth, all-star show paying tribute to Osbourne as he and Black Sabbath gave their final live performance. The event raised more than £1m for local charities fundraising for children's causes and treatment of Parkinson's, which Osbourne was diagnosed with in 2003. Evoking David Bowie's death just days after the release of his final album, Blackstar, in 2016, Osbourne died 17 days after the performance, at home in Buckinghamshire. Thousands of fans are expected to attend the event: Birmingham council has encouraged mourners to turn up early, and roads will close from 7am. A book of condolences will remain open at the Birmingham Museum and Art gallery, where the exhibition Ozzy Osbourne (1948-2025): Working Class Hero remains open. In 2011, Osbourne told the Times what he hoped for from his funeral. He didn't care about the music, he said. 'But I want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest.'
