Sabah, Sarawak creative firms get RM7.4m boost, over 1,200 jobs created under govt fund
He said the approved applications covered various categories, including feature and short films, documentaries, marketing, scriptwriting and post-production, creating over 1,245 jobs.
'As of this month, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has also received 36 applications for the Borneo TV Programme Fund and 24 for the Post-Production Fund. All applications are evaluated transparently and with integrity by a committee comprising professional panellists and ministry representatives,' he said.
He was speaking at the presentation of Creative Content Fund letters of acceptance to Sabah's creative industry players in Sabah here yesterday night.
Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Finas chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, Finas chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Information Department director-general Julina Johan.
Fahmi further said that under the DKK, 14 local production companies have been offered the Borneo TV Programme Fund, including six from Sabah.
He said the six Sabah companies received approvals amounting to RM1.15 million, expected to create over 200 new jobs.
'As for the Post-Production Fund, nine companies received offers, one of which is from Sabah. For Sabah, one project was approved with a value of nearly RM240,000, adding value to the post-filming process,' he said.
He added that the total amount approved for the seven Sabah companies under the Borneo TV Programme Fund and the Post-Production Fund stood at RM1.39 million.
Fahmi said various success stories have emerged through government grants and incentives, including the film 'Blood Brothers: Bara Naga', which grossed RM73.6 million, 'Bleat!' which made a mark at Cannes, and most recently, 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2', which opened in Indonesia with over 200,000 viewers in its first week.
Fahmi added that the Communications Ministry, through Finas, has agreed to collaborate with Borneo TV via the Borneo TV Programme Fund, with content produced by its recipients to also be aired on the Borneo TV platform.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the DKK has opened vast opportunities for the people of Sabah to showcase their stories, culture and heritage through various mediums such as films, documentaries and television programmes.
'Sabah possesses extraordinary sociocultural diversity – with more than 30 ethnic groups and over 200 sub-ethnicities. This makes the state one of the richest regions in terms of oral, visual and narrative culture, which deserves attention as a source of authentic content,' he said.
He added that Sabah's natural beauty gives it a distinct advantage to be translated into creative content capable of attracting both local and international audiences.

"We urge all Asean member states to continue supporting diplomatic efforts and trust-building mechanisms to prevent further escalation and strengthen mutual understanding. "Peace is always the foundation of prosperity," he added.

RTS Link's immigration complex reaches major milestone

(MRT Corp pic) PETALING JAYA : MRT Corp marked a key construction milestone for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link with the completion of the project's immigration, customs and quarantine complex at Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahrutoday. The complex includes co-located clearance facilities for both Malaysian and Singaporean authorities, a first in Southeast Asia. MRT Corp said the project will now move into its final phase, which includes interior fittings and facade installation, set to begin in September. 'Today's event reflects our shared commitment to delivering a project of national importance,' its CEO, Zarif Hashim, said. Other key updates on the RTS Link project include structural works completed for the marine viaduct, the Bukit Chagar station, and the Wadi Hana depot. Interior works at the Wadi Hana depot are on track for completion by December. The power supply there was activated two months ahead of schedule. MRT Corp also said Bukit Chagar station's roof façade installation is under way. The next major milestone is the dynamic testing of the RTS train system in May 2026. This test will run the train along the full route, from the Wadi Hana depot through all the stations to validate operations and readiness. 'With these key components advancing steadily, we remain on course for operations to begin on Dec 31, 2026,' said Zarif. 'MRT Corp is fully committed to delivering a safe, future-ready and high-performing asset. 'This is a reflection of the trust placed in us by the government. This was made possible through the unwavering support of the transport ministry, the Johor government and all partner agencies who have worked tirelessly to keep this project on track and aligned with its national purpose.' The RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru with Woodlands North in Singapore. Once launched, the link will operate with eight driverless train sets, each comprising four cars and capable of carrying more than 600 passengers a trip. The RTS Link will have an overall peak capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction.

Median monthly wage for formal sector hits RM3,000 in Q1 2025

PUTRAJAYA : The median monthly wage for Malaysia's formal sector rose 5.5% to RM3,000 in March, up from RM2,844 a year earlier, according to the Employee Wages Statistics (Formal Sector) Report for the first quarter of 2025, released by the statistics department today. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the increase reflected the country's continued economic growth and the impact of the revised minimum wage policy, which he said had positively influenced the labour market. In a statement, he said that as of March, the formal sector workforce stood at 6.8 million, comprising 55.1% men and 44.9% women. The median wage for male employees remained at RM3,000, while female employees saw a 6.5% increase to RM2,982. The highest year-on-year wage growth was recorded among workers under 20, whose median wage rose 13.3% to RM1,700, largely driven by the reimplementation of the minimum wage policy in February. However, a slight drop was observed in the number of workers aged 20 to 24. Uzir said the mining and quarrying sector posted the highest median wage at RM8,800, although it accounted for just 0.6% of total formal employment. The agriculture sector remained the lowest, with a median wage of RM2,200. Geographically, Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest median monthly wage at RM4,445 in March 2025, followed by Selangor at RM3,300. At the other end of the spectrum, Sabah posted a median wage of RM2,000, while Kelantan and Perlis recorded the lowest at RM1,800. Uzir said 27.4% of Malaysian formal sector workers earned below RM2,000 per month as of March, down 3.8 percentage points from 31.2% in the same month last year. He said a percentile analysis revealed that workers in the bottom 10th percentile earned RM1,700 or less, while those in the top 10th percentile earned at least RM11,000 per month. 'This reflects an income gap where the top 10% earn six times more than the bottom 10%,' he said.
