KIOWA COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Sheriff's deputies in Kansas made an unexpected traffic stop on Friday when they pulled over a vehicle carrying none other than 1980s pop-rock icon John Waite and his band.
Sgt. Justin Rugg conducted the stop as the group was headed to Dodge City for a performance at United Wireless Arena. A longtime fan, Rugg couldn't hide his excitement.

'I'm not even on cloud nine, I'm on like cloud 12,' Rugg said after meeting the English rock singer, best known for hits like 'Missing You' and 'When I See You Smile.'
The Kiowa County Sheriff's Office shared the encounter in a lighthearted social media post, calling Waite a 'cool guy' and thanking him for taking a photo with the sergeant.
On his official Facebook page, Waite said they were 'pulled over for speeding' and called Rugg a 'good guy cop.'
Waite's band continued on their way, with deputies wishing them a 'rockin' time.'
His career began in the 1970s when he became the bassist and lead vocalist for The Babys, which later disbanded after Waite was 'pulled from the stage by an overzealous fan during an encore.' According to his website, Waite 'seriously injured his knee' in the incident.
Waite went on to launch a solo career through the 1980s before forming Bad English with former bandmates of The Babys, Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips; Journey guitarist Neal Schon; and drummer Deen Castronovo. The group would break up a few years later, relaunching Waite's solo efforts.

Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden's first live lead singer, dies at 69

Paul Mario Day, an English singer and Iron Maiden's first live vocalist, has died at 69. The band announced Day's death on social media July 30. "We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden's first ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul's family and friends," the heavy metal band wrote on Instagram and Facebook. "Paul was a lovely person and good mate," the statement continued. "Rest in peace Paul." A representative for the band, William Luff, confirmed Day's death, noting that "he performed live for a short time with the very first line up of Iron Maiden 50 years ago but never recorded any music or released a record with them." Day on lead vocals, Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance on guitar, Steve Harris on bass and backing vocals and Ron Matthews on drums made up the band's first lineup in December 1975. Harris is the only original Iron Maiden member to have remained after the band underwent several lineups throughout the years. Paul Di'Anno, Iron Maiden's first lead singer, dies at 66 Day was replaced in 1976 because, according to Harris, the band was looking to shake up its onstage presence, according to a 2004 Iron Maiden biography. Dennis Wilcock later replaced him. Once their recording career began, lead vocals were performed by Paul Di'Anno and, ultimately, Bruce Dickinson, aside from a brief hiatus with Blaze Bayley while Dickinson pursued a solo career. Di'Anno died in 2024, at 66. Day performed as the lead vocalist of British heavy metal band More from 1980 to 1982.

Nelly Korda, Charley Hull enjoyed filming Happy Gilmore 2 but Hull 'couldn't be an actress'

Charley Hull was born about a month after the original "Happy Gilmore" movie came out in 1996. Nelly Korda, who turned 27 on Monday, is two years younger than Hull. Both joined a host of golf stars – including fellow No. 1 Scottie Scheffler – in the comedy hit's sequel, which brings back Adam Sandler in the lead role. "Happy Gilmore 2" was released on Netflix July 25 and, according to Variety, 46.7 million viewers streamed the movie in just three days — making it the biggest U.S. opening weekend in Netflix history. Korda said she planned to watch the movie sometime this week while she's competing at the AIG Women's British Open in Wales. "It was so cool getting to meet Adam Sandler, getting to be part of that process, and actually seeing how difficult acting is from that point of view," said Korda. "That scene with Shooter was amazing to see just from my point of view, his acting, and how much it takes. "That scene took all day. It was like a 20-second scene. The appreciation for their lifestyle and their job definitely grew for me. For me, it was just so cool to be a part of, and getting to do it with Nancy (Lopez) is a lot of fun too." England's Charley Hull said the filming process was also long but "good fun." "Never thought I'd be in a movie, but there you go," she said. "Definitely safe to say I couldn't be an actress. Just filming that scene all day, I haven't got the patience." Other golf stars in the film include Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris from the PGA Tour, as well as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka from LIV Golf. PGA Tour legends Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and John Daly also joined in the fun.

Will There Be A ‘Happy Gilmore 3'? Here's The Bad News

Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 had a massive debut weekend on Netflix, so does that mean there are already talks of a Happy Gilmore 3? Happy Gilmore 2, which is new on Netflix, arrived on the streaming platform on July 25, more than 29 years after the release of the original Happy Gilmore film in February of 1996. Starring Sandler as the title character opposite original Happy Gilmore cast members Julie Bowen (Virginia Venit) and Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin), Happy Gilmore 2 finds Happy in a not-so-happy place. After marrying Virginia and having five kids together, Happy's life goes into a tailspin after a personal tragedy and he quits the golf game. But when a huge opportunity arises for Happy's daughter, Vienna (Sunny Sandler), to attend a prestigious but spendy private ballet school, the one-time hockey-stick-wielding professional golf sensation aims to make a comeback to provide for his family. However, a rich entrepreneur, Frank Manatee (Benny Sadfie) runs interference with Happy's plan when his new extreme sports-like golf league threatens the world of professional golf. Happy Gilmore 2 attracted massive viewership numbers on Netflix in its first three days of release, which was enough for the sequel to rack up 46.7 million views — which equates to 91.9 million hours viewed — to debut at No. 1 on Netflix's Top 10 Global Movies chart for the week of July 21-27. Naturally, a viewer response like that begs the obvious question of whether there will be a Happy Gilmore 3. Unfortunately for fans, Happy Gilmore franchise writer Tim Herlihy — who penned the Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 scripts with Sandler — told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday that right now, the answer is no as to whether the idea of a second Happy Gilmore sequel has been discussed. 'Not between me and Adam,' Herlihy, who did the interview with Sandler, told THR. 'I can say we haven't had one discussion about it. I haven't even thought about it in the privacy of my own brain. I'm sure some people in the world are talking about it. Never say never, I guess. We said we'd never do Happy Gilmore 2, and it's currently streaming on Netflix, so you never know.' As for other principals involved with the new film, the idea of a Happy Gilmore 3 film isn't on Happy Gilmore 2 director Kyle Newacheck's radar, either. 'I would be too forward to even think about it right now,' Newacheck told The Direct. 'The first one took [a] 29-year gestation period before they figured out what the second one is. I feel like whatever I come up with right now is going to be, not it, homie.' Adam Sandler And Tim Herlihy Were In A Happy Place Before 'Happy Gilmore 2' Was Even Released In his THR interview with Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler was naturally thrilled about the huge reception of Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix over the weekend, which was an extension of the good vibes he was getting before the film arrived on the streaming service. 'We couldn't be happier. It's something that I can't describe,' Sandler told THR. 'Just walking down the street, hearing people talk about it even before it came out — we were like, something fun is going on here. We went from 'This was nothing we ever thought about' to having one of the best times of our careers together feeling, the fun of it all.' While the idea of a Happy Gilmore 3 seems like a non-starter for now, it doesn't mean that other characters in Herlihy and Sandler's treasure trove of comedies aren't up for the sequel treatment. Herlihy told THR that the success of Happy Gilmore 2 'throws it open' regarding sequels for past characters from their films. 'Obviously, a lot of our older movies, we've lost cast members, like in this one, and sometimes it's hard to imagine doing it without them. Definitely not sure we want to just be in the business of doing sequels to movies,' Herlihy told THR with a laugh. 'But the response to this and the way people have embraced it definitely makes it more exciting, if we were to do that.' Also starring Ben Stiller, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny), Hayley Joel Osment, Sadie Sandler, Jackie Sandler, Margaret Qualley and John Daly — and featuring several and showbiz and pro sports star cameos — Happy Gilmore 2 is new on Netflix.
