UNC baseball ace named finalist for National Pitcher of the Year award
All year long, one pitcher for North Carolina has dominated over all others. Undefeated ace Jake Knapp, already named ACC Pitcher of the Year, is now one of five finalists for the National Pitcher of the Year from the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Knapp joins Gabe Craig from Baylor, Jacob Morrison from Coastal Carolina, Zan Taylor from UNC Wilmington, and Dylan Volantis from Texas. Three of the five finalists for the NPOY award hail from the Carolinas.
Knapp finished his 2025 campaign with a 13-0 record and a 1.98 ERA. In 14 starts and 15 appearances, he threw 95.1 innings, allowing 21 earned runs on 63 hits with 85 strikeouts. Opposing batters hit .186 against the star pitcher.
Knapp was tied with Zane Taylor for the third lowest ERA in the nation, just a hundreth over Evan Dempsey from FGCU. The Tar Heels ace also led all of college baseball with 13 wins on the season, tied with Ricky Ojeda from UC Irvine; however, Ojeda lost a game, Knapp hasn't.
It is clear why the graduate right-hander is one of the best in the business, and he is getting the necessary recognition on the team, conference, and national levels. The winner of the prestigous award will be announced on June 13th, just a week and a half away.
The inception of this award was in 2009, and since then, no UNC baseball pitcher has won the award. Knapp has a chance to not only be recognized as the best, but he can make UNC history in the process.

SafeSport issues permanant ban on high-profile gymnastics coach in latest chapter of 9-year-old case
DENVER (AP) — The gymnastics coach for a one-time Olympic alternate received a lifetime ban Thursday from the U.S. Center for SafeSport. Qi Han, whose case dates to at least 2016 and who had been under a temporary sanction for the past two years, was listed as permanently ineligible, subject to appeal, on the center's disciplinary database. It said he was found to have committed emotional misconduct, physical misconduct and violated USA Gymnastics policies and bylaws. Han, a former gymnast on the Chinese national team, and his wife, Yiwen Chen, opened Everest Gymnastics in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2004. The gym quickly gained prominence within USA Gymnastics. In 2016, Han served as the coach to Olympic alternate Ashton Locklear. Locklear told The New York Times in 2018 that Han physically and emotionally abused her and at one point threw a cell phone at her. Han denied the allegations. Several other athletes who trained at Everest came forward over ensuing years, describing similar experiences with Han. As of Thursday night, Han was still listed as the co-owner and head coach at Everest. Emails sent by The Associated Press to multiple addresses at the gymnastics club were not immediately returned. Details from Han's accusers started coming out the year before the SafeSport Center opened in the wake of extensive abuse committed by former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. The Times reported that USA Gymnastics handed Han's case over to the center shortly after it opened in 2017. In explaining the lengthy amount of time it took to resolve the case, the center said in a statement that it involved more than 80 witnesses, thousands of pages of evidence and transcripts and allegations that span decades. The center said it stood by the fairness and thoroughness of the process but also 'remains committed to increasing efficiencies in our process to help resolve cases more quickly.' The center's interim CEO, April Holmes, portrayed the latest development as a sign the center is making sports safer. 'We know it is not easy to come forward, so we thank those who shared their stories and helped bring resolution to this case,' Holmes said. Clemson's Dabo Swinney reveals 'secret sauce' he has for Bill Belichick's UNC squad this year
It's a new look in the ACC for college football as Bill Belichick becoming the North Carolina Tar Heels new head coach shakes things up in one of the country's top conferences. Dabo Swinney, the longtime Clemson Tigers head coach, described the conference as playing the "New England Patriots," which includes former Patriots coach Bill O'Brien coming on as Boston College's new leader on the sidelines. Swinney and Belichick had a joint interview with ESPN's Rece Davis, where he admitted not being too worried about the accomplished NFL coach joining the college ranks. In fact, Swinney joked that he has some "secret sauce" to beat the Tar Heels when they see each other on Oct. 4 on the road. Ryan Allen, Clemson's specialists coach, was Belichick's former punter on the Patriots. "We're going to lean on him heavy to figure out how to defeat y'all's punt block team or whatever else," Swinney said of Allen. After the Tigers take on the Tar Heels, they will have to see O'Brien's Eagles the following week. "We play the New England Patriots this year," Swinney said. "We go to North Carolina, and then we go to Boston College to play Bill O'Brien. So, I feel like I'm playing the whole Patriots organization in about a two-week span there." While a Belichick-led UNC squad poses a new challenge for the ACC, Clemson has handled them nicely since Swinney took over in 2018. The Tigers have beaten the Tar Heels 14 times over that span, including their last matchup in 2023 – a 31-20 victory for Clemson. Meanwhile, Belichick is hoping to snap UNC's losing streak against Clemson, which sits at six games. In their last 10 matchups, the Tar Heels are 1-9. Clemson went 10-4 last season in Swinney's 16th season as head coach, reaching the expanded College Football Playoff. They ended up losing to Texas, 38-24, in the first round to end their season. The Tigers return quarterback Cade Klubnik, who had a career year under Swinney in 2024. They also added Tom Allen from Penn State on defense in the transfer portal.
