New Delhi: An undertrial prisoner managed to escape from police custody at Amar Colony police station, sending
Delhi Police
into a tizzy. The incident occurred when the accused, who was brought in for questioning in connection with a robbery case, fled from the station while the officers on duty were reportedly distracted.
The inmate, identified as Meherban, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, was temporarily brought to Amar Colony police station for further investigation. Taking advantage of a lapse in security, he absconded from the premises. A police source stated that the escape happened when the personnel were preoccupied with other official work.
Immediately after the escape, multiple police teams were formed to trace the fugitive.
Raids are currently underway at various locations linked to Meherban's associates and known hideouts.
A departmental inquiry has been launched to investigate the security lapse. An officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP) is heading the probe, and accountability is expected to be fixed in the coming days.
This incident has once again raised concerns about recurring lapses in police custody procedures.

Notably, this is not an isolated incident, raising serious concerns over recurring lapses in police custody and prisoner management. In April this year, a man accused in a cyber fraud case managed to escape from police custody at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi.
He woke up to attend nature's call. When the escort constables took him to the toilet, he pushed them aside, removed his handcuffs, jumped out of the toilet window, and fled.
In 2024, a man arrested in connection with a murder case escaped from police custody. He reportedly jumped out of the window of a washroom at Lodhi Colony police premises, catching the escorting officers completely off guard.
Similarly, in 2021, a gangster allegedly involved in multiple murders escaped from police custody at Karkardooma Court. Earlier in 2019, an inmate of Tihar Jail slipped away from a Delhi Police team while being transported via the Dakshin Express near Agra.

Cyberfraud arrested in Katihar for Rs56L scam

Motihari: A notorious cybercriminal from Katihar was arrested on Saturday night by Motihari cyber police for allegedly defrauding a retired agriculture department employee of Rs 56 lakh. The accused, a BTech graduate, had been evading arrest despite facing over 21 cyberfraud cases in eight states. Motihari SP Swarn Prabhat said the accused posed as a CBI officer and threatened the elderly victim and his wife during a video call that showed a fake CBI office. They were accused of treason and threatened with death, forcing them to transfer large sums of money across multiple accounts in Feb 2025. The scam came to light after the victim, Dilip Kumar, lodged an FIR. A technical investigation traced the funds to the account of Katihar resident Akash Mukherjee. A police team raided his house in Katihar and arrested him. Officials said Mukherjee turned to online fraud after failing to secure a job. He later joined a cybercrime gang operating from West Bengal and opened a hardware shop to conceal his activities. Motihari police said they are using technology to track down cybercriminals and recently busted a transnational gang operating from Pakistan and Nepal. Thumba police arrest key links of drug racket with MDMA during hotel raid

Thiruvananthapuram: Thumba police arrested two individuals, who were identified as key links of a drug racket, with MDMA during a raid at a hotel in Attipra on Sunday. Police identified the arrested individuals as Ananthu, 29, of Panayil Veedu at Pangappara and Arya, 27, of Anjima Bhavan at Chadayamangalam. According to police, they stayed at various hotels across the state and sold drugs supplied to them from Bengaluru by others who are part of the racket. Police seized 10g of MDMA stored in several small packets that were concealed in the woman's hair during the raid. The duo had been staying at the hotel in Attipra for the past two days and the hotel staff, who became suspicious of the frequent visits of young men and women to their room, alerted the police. The accused were remanded after being produced before a court on charges under Section 22 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act-1985. "We have seized their mobile phones and the call details, chat history, etc., are being examined to find the other links in the racket. The racket brings drugs in huge quantities from Bengaluru for sale here. The accused will be taken into custody for detailed interrogation. We are yet to find out whether there are other NDPS cases registered against them in the past," said police. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
