Father of five fined RM6,000 for threatening DBKL officer over balloon vendor incident
KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — A father of five was fined RM6,000, in default five months' jail, by the Magistrates' Court today after pleading guilty to threatening a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer over the balloon vendor incident in late March.
While meting out the sentence on 57-year-old clothing trader Mustafa Sulaiman, Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan stressed that public interest must prevail, noting the accused's remarks were akin to 'pouring fuel on fire'.
'The court hopes this sentence will serve as a lesson to the accused. For the first charge, he is fined RM2,000 or two months' jail in default; for the second, RM4,000 or three months in default,' she said.
Mustafa was charged with making a statement with the intent to incite others to commit an offence against DBKL officer Mohammad Shahli Zaini Mohd Zulkepli, 32.
The charge under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
He was also charged with criminal intimidation for sending a WhatsApp message to the same victim, threatening to cause death or injury, under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both.
Both offences were committed at the DBKL Enforcement Tower, Jalan Yaacob Latif, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, at 10.30 am on April 7.
Mustafa's lawyer, Dzafir Firdaus Ahmad Zubairy, pleaded for a minimal fine, citing that his client is the sole breadwinner for his wife, five children, and mother-in-law.
'This is his first offence, and he has no prior criminal record. The statement was made in a WhatsApp group and did not amount to incitement,' he submitted.
Deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa, however, pressed for a deterrent sentence, arguing that the WhatsApp screenshot clearly contained threats, incitement and elements of intimidation directed at a DBKL enforcement officer in the course of his official duties.
'The accused acted with malicious intent to undermine the reputation of the Mayor and to incite harm against DBKL enforcement personnel,' she added. — Bernama

Underground blast near sewer startles Bukit Minyak residents, no injuries reported, says Penang Fire Dept
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — People in the Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak area were startled today by an underground explosion near a sewer line, which released smoke into the air. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations, John Sagun Francis, said an emergency call was received at 2.46 pm, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found that the explosion had occurred near a sewer line and detected a gas odour at the site. Witnesses also reported seeing smoke. Firefighters conducted a size-up and measured the surrounding air quality, including pH levels,' he said in a statement today. The operation was supported by the Hazardous Materials unit from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station. Tests showed that the pH level of the liquid in the sewer was neutral. Further checks confirmed that the sewer line belongs to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and the company has been notified to take further action. Police sergeant killed in motorcycle crash on NSE near Kuala Kangsar
IPOH, June 7 — A police sergeant was killed while on his way home to Kedah after the motorcycle he was riding skidded at Kilometre 253.7 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) northbound near Kuala Kangsar yesterday. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said in the incident at about 7.24 pm, the victim Shamsul Ishak, 58, who was attached to the Special Branch of the Kedah contingent police headquarters sustained injuries to his left rib area. 'Further investigations found that when the victim reached the location of the incident, he was believed to have lost control (of the motorcycle) and veered off, crashing into the metal road divider, causing him to be thrown off. The victim, who was severely injured, was taken by ambulance to Taiping Hospital for further treatment. 'However, he was pronounced dead at around 9.24 pm in the hospital's emergency ward,' he said. He also said the victim was believed to have been on holiday and making his way back home to Alor Setar, Kedah after meeting with his friends across the state. He added that further investigations are still ongoing and the case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama
