Baseball: Ichiro attends opening of Japan-linked Hall of Fame exhibit
The exhibit, titled "Yakyu/Baseball: The Transpacific Exchange of the Game," features artifacts and stories about a game that became the most popular sport in Japan less than 50 years after the country established diplomatic relations with the United States, the museum said.
Ichiro, the first Asian-born player elected to the hall, will be formally inducted as a Class of 2025 member this weekend in Cooperstown, New York.
The former Seattle Mariners icon is scheduled to take part in Saturday's parade with fellow Class of 2025 members CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner, and will make a speech at Sunday's induction ceremony.

Sumo: Yokozuna Hoshoryu back on tour after big toe injury
KOGA, Japan - Yokozuna Hoshoryu joined the Japan Sumo Association's regional tour on Thursday after recovering from a left big toe injury that forced his withdrawal from July's Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. The Mongolian-born grand champion ended the 15-day meet with a 1-4 record, continuing his difficult start at the exalted rank. He also pulled out at 5-5 in March in Osaka on his yokozuna debut, before going 12-3 in May. Back in action in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture, Hoshoryu appeared in a morning sparring session against various opponents, including rising star Kusano, before facing his fellow yokozuna Onosato in a bout. He was wearing split-toe "tabi" socks on his left foot as he continues to nurse the toe, which was both fractured and dislocated. "The foot has got significantly better. I hope it continues to do so day by day," said the 26-year-old, who revealed he wore a cast to protect the injury for around five days after the July tournament. "I had discomfort even before the tournament. I didn't know (at the time) there was a crack." Eager to make an impactful return at the Autumn meet in Tokyo in September, Hoshoryu is searching for the best way to bear the weight of responsibility that comes with being at the top of the sumo pyramid. "I got injured because my desire to win the championship was too strong. I want to get my usual self back," said the two-time Emperor's Cup winner who will remain with the tour until the Aug. 31 finale. "I was unconsciously thinking (about the pressure of being a yokozuna). That was my problem."

Football: South Korean superstar Son signs with Los Angeles FC
TOKYO - South Korean superstar Son Heung Min has joined Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC from England's Tottenham Hotspur, both clubs said Wednesday. The agreement between LAFC and Spurs for the 33-year-old striker is worth around $26 million, a record for the top-flight league in the United States and Canada, according to sports channel ESPN. Son moved to Tottenham in 2015. In the 2021-22 season, he became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot.
