Joel Klatt sees Michigan football surging in 2025 with strong defense, favorable schedule

USA Today5 days ago
Most pundits are entering 2025 with Michigan football ranked in their top 25, yet, not many have faith in the Wolverines. With an initial over-under set at 8.5, it's been beyond tempting for many to take the under.
But not Joel Klatt.
The preeminent Fox Sports college football color commentator broke down the maize and blue and his expectations on his podcast on Monday, and he shared his enthusiasm for the defense, the chances of offensive improvement, and the schedule as reasons for why the Wolverines will look much better than last season's output.
"Michigan went 8-5 a year ago, several close games coming off that national championship the year before," Klatt said. "Of the teams not in the playoff, Michigan had the best -- easily -- last month of the season of anybody in the country. They were unbelievable on defense. They get wins against Ohio State and against Alabama, despite scoring only 32 total points in those games. Their defense was No. 1 in the country in scoring defense and total defense in the last four. And those last four, by the way? Not a cupcake schedule. They played three teams that were the top 15 -- Indiana, Ohio State, and Alabama. They gave up two total touchdowns over the last three and a half games.
"If they get any offensive contribution from Bryce Underwood or whoever plays quarterback, this team should be drastically better. This was an eight-win team with an offense that couldn't throw the ball at all.
"And then you actually have the schedule and the Big Ten. They actually have a decent schedule. They don't have to play Penn State, they don't have to play Oregon, they don't have to play Illinois, they don't have to play Indiana, and they don't have to play Iowa. So, what do they have? A huge game in Week 2 against Oklahoma that's on the road. If -- and I know that's a big if, because Norman's not an easy place to play -- if they were to beat Oklahoma, nothing looks daunting on the schedule. They have games at Nebraska, at USC, Washington before the huge game against Ohio State at the end of the year.
"I think this is a bounceback year for Michigan. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they go and win that game in Norman. I really don't. Look out for Michigan. I think that's a bounceback. I think that's a buy for next year -- Michigan is a buy."
The big thing for Michigan will be can it take the show on the road? At no point in 2025 will the Wolverines have two home games in a row, alternating between home and away throughout the season, minus the two straight road games at Northwestern and at Maryland before hosting Ohio State.
So, it's simple: if Michigan can play well on the road, as it had from 2021-23, then it will be good. If not? Then it could be another long season.

Penn State's offensive line is built for a playoff run in 2025

The offensive line has been an up-and-down unit for Penn State in recent years, but that's about to change. Heading into the 2025 season, the Nittany Lions return four out of five starters, a level of continuity that's rare in college football. This group is experienced, physical, and finally built to push around elite defenses. When you have that kind of chemistry in the trenches, everything else opens up. The quarterbacks stay clean and the running backs find lanes. The whole offense breathes easier. For a team that wants to make a legit playoff run once again, having a veteran line is exactly the foundation you want. Drew Shelton has been tested on the edge and continues to improve every year. Nick Dawkins and Vega Ioane also provide critical depth and flexibility. If injuries hit, the drop-off won't be major. That's what makes this line so scary. These aren't just big bodies; they're leaders who know how to win in the Big Ten. What separates this O-line from past Penn State units is balance. These guys aren't just built to run block or pass protect, they can do both at a high level. You saw glimpses of it last season when they controlled the line of scrimmage in big games, but now the expectation is domination week to week. In short-yardage situations, this group can lean on people. In passing situations, they can give Drew Allar the time he needs to go through his reads and take deep shots. There's no glaring weakness. Every guy on this line plays with an edge, and they've been through enough together to trust each other when the pressure hits. If Penn State's offensive line stays healthy and plays to its potential, this team can absolutely win the Big Ten and make a push for the College Football Playoff. Success for this unit means keeping Drew Allar clean, helping Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen hit 1,000 yards again, and setting the tone every Saturday. A disappointing year would mean inconsistent protection, missed blocks in key moments, or lack of push in short-yardage. But right now, everything is pointing in the opposite direction. This offensive line isn't flashy and that's exactly why it works. It's built to dominate in silence and take Penn State where it's trying to go.

How to Watch Claressa Shields vs. Lani Daniels Live

Claressa Shields puts up her undisputed heavyweight title on the line against IBF light heavyweight champion Lani Daniels this Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. It's the kind of high-stakes bout that fans won't want to miss -- especially if you're planning to catch the action from home on a good screen. Shields, considered by many as the "GWOAT" of boxing, is the most decorated female boxer in history and the only boxer to hold all four major titles in three different weight classes. She enters this heavyweight fight at a perfect 16-0 with three knockouts. A heavy favorite going in, defeating Daniels would also mean Shields will remain undefeated in her home state. But Daniels is no slouch. Daniels hails from New Zealand and is on a seven-match winning streak. Her overall record is 11-2-2 with one knockout. Upsetting Shields would give Daniels her first title win outside of her home country. She won both the IBF heavyweight and IBF light heavyweight titles in 2023 in Auckland and Whangarei, New Zealand, respectively. The fight and full match card will stream on DAZN on Saturday, July 26.
