Turkey taking crypto transaction steps to prevent laundering

Al Arabiya24-06-2025
Turkey is taking steps to prevent the laundering of criminal proceeds from illegal betting and fraud through cryptocurrency transactions, Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on Tuesday.
On his X account, he reposted an article by state-owned Anadolu news agency saying Turkey was preparing to introduce transfer limits and mandatory waiting periods for withdrawals on crypto assets.
It said the new steps will include waiting periods of 48 to 72 hours for crypto withdrawals where the travel rule - requiring the verification of information on the sender and recipient of a transaction - is not applied.
'We are taking new steps to prevent the laundering of criminal proceeds obtained from illegal betting and fraud through cryptocurrency transactions,' Simsek said.
'Administrative, legal, and financial sanctions will be imposed on non-compliant platforms,' he added.
The daily limit on the transfer of stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, will be capped at $3,000, with a monthly limit of $50,000, Anadolu said.
The travel rule is a set of guidelines designed to prevent money laundering, that mandates virtual asset service providers to obtain and disclose precise details pertaining to the sender and recipient of a virtual asset transfer.

Türkiye, Syria Sign Defense Cooperation MoU after Ankara Talks

The defense ministers of Türkiye and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on military training and consultancy after talks in Ankara on Wednesday, Türkiye's defense ministry said. The neighbors had been negotiating a comprehensive military cooperation agreement for months, after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December. Also, speaking at a news conference in Ankara with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, of undermining the country's efforts to reestablish itself after more than a decade of civil war. He said Israel had 'fueled certain difficulties' in Syria and warned that Israeli security "cannot be achieved through undermining the security of your neighbors." 'To the contrary, you should make sure your neighboring countries are prosperous and secure. If you try to destabilize these countries, if you take steps to that end, this could trigger other crises in the region.' Most recently, hundreds were killed in clashes in the southern province of Sweida between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side and fighters from the Druze minority on the other.

Pakistan offers assistance as 6.1 magnitude quake flattens buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed deep concern at a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that flattened buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province, saying that Pakistan stands ready to offer any assistance to Ankara. Türkiye's disaster management agency said the quake was recorded at around 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT) on Sunday evening and was felt as far away as Istanbul. An 81-year-old woman passed away shortly after she was pulled from the rubble in the town of Sindirgi, which was the epicenter of the quake, Türkiye's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. He said 16 buildings had collapsed in the province due to the tremors, injuring around 29. None of the injured were critically wounded, Yerlikaya said. 'Deeply concerned by the earthquake in Turkiye's Balıkesir province,' Sharif wrote on social media platform X. 'I convey my heartfelt sympathies to my dear brother, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and assure him that Pakistan stands ready to extend all possible assistance.' Türkiye's disaster management agency said the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6 magnitude, and urged citizens not to enter damaged buildings. President Erdogan issued a statement following the earthquake, wishing all affected citizens a speedy recovery. 'May god protect our country from any kind of disaster,' the Turkish president wrote on X. Türkiye sits on top of major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent. In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Türkiye and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of Syria.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Turkiye's Balikesir province, killing 1 and collapsing buildings

ISTANBUL: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkiye's northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, killing at least one person and causing more than a dozen buildings to collapse, officials said. At least 29 people were injured. The earthquake, with an epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that were felt some 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the north in Istanbul — a city of more than 16 million people. An elderly woman died shortly after being pulled out alive from the debris of a collapsed building in Sindirgi, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told reporters. Four other people were rescued from the building. Yerlikaya said a total of 16 buildings collapsed in the region — most of them derelict and unused. Two mosque minarets also tumbled down, he said. None of the injured were in serious condition, the minister said. Television footage showed rescue teams asking for silence so they can listen for signs of life beneath the rubble. Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency said the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6, and urged citizens not to enter damaged buildings. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement wishing all affected citizens a speedy recovery. 'May God protect our country from any kind of disaster,' he wrote on X. In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkiye and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces.
