Turkey taking crypto transaction steps to prevent laundering
On his X account, he reposted an article by state-owned Anadolu news agency saying Turkey was preparing to introduce transfer limits and mandatory waiting periods for withdrawals on crypto assets.
It said the new steps will include waiting periods of 48 to 72 hours for crypto withdrawals where the travel rule - requiring the verification of information on the sender and recipient of a transaction - is not applied.
'We are taking new steps to prevent the laundering of criminal proceeds obtained from illegal betting and fraud through cryptocurrency transactions,' Simsek said.
'Administrative, legal, and financial sanctions will be imposed on non-compliant platforms,' he added.
The daily limit on the transfer of stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, will be capped at $3,000, with a monthly limit of $50,000, Anadolu said.
The travel rule is a set of guidelines designed to prevent money laundering, that mandates virtual asset service providers to obtain and disclose precise details pertaining to the sender and recipient of a virtual asset transfer.

Pakistan offers assistance as 6.1 magnitude quake flattens buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed deep concern at a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that flattened buildings in Türkiye's Balikesir province, saying that Pakistan stands ready to offer any assistance to Ankara. Türkiye's disaster management agency said the quake was recorded at around 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT) on Sunday evening and was felt as far away as Istanbul. An 81-year-old woman passed away shortly after she was pulled from the rubble in the town of Sindirgi, which was the epicenter of the quake, Türkiye's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. He said 16 buildings had collapsed in the province due to the tremors, injuring around 29. None of the injured were critically wounded, Yerlikaya said. ISTANBUL: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkiye's northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, killing at least one person and causing more than a dozen buildings to collapse, officials said. At least 29 people were injured.
