Browns' Shedeur Sanders set for surprise preseason opportunity
Browns' Shedeur Sanders set for surprise preseason opportunity originally appeared on The Sporting News The Shedeur Sanders era in Cleveland is set to begin in an unconventional way. Sanders' NFL journey hasn't exactly followed a smooth path. After sliding to the fifth round of the draft, he entered camp with something to prove. And now, after a solid showing in OTAs and training camp, he's getting his first unofficial shot. According to insider Mary Kay Cabot, Sanders is expected to start Friday night's preseason opener on the road against the Panthers. With Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel both sidelined by hamstring injuries, the opportunity has fallen to Sanders. It's not the way most quarterbacks get their start—but it's a chance Sanders has been waiting for since being drafted by the Browns. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has kept the quarterback competition wide open, with veteran Joe Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders all in the mix. And while Sanders has mostly worked with the third and fourth-team units, he's made the most of those reps—flashing the arm talent, athleticism, and confidence that made him a star at Colorado. Friday's game won't just be a test of Sanders' mechanics—it'll be a look at how quickly he can process plays, manage a huddle, and handle pressure at the NFL level. He's expected to get extended run, and with other quarterbacks nursing injuries, a strong outing could fast-track his place in the pecking order. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp For Sanders, this is more than just filling in—it's an early audition for something bigger. Coaches have reportedly taken notice of his poise and work ethic. Now he'll have the stage to show it under the lights. It may just be preseason, but for Sanders, this moment means everything. It's a real shot to change the narrative—and it starts Friday night.

Ex-Miami Heat security worker stole and sold $2M in NBA gear, including LeBron James Finals jersey: feds
A former Miami Heat security worker stole millions of dollars worth of franchise memorabilia — including a LeBron James game-worn NBA Finals jersey — and sold it on the black market, federal officials announced. Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, snatched over 400 game-worn jerseys and other items when he worked for the Miami Heat from 2016 to 2021 and later as an NBA security employee from 2022 to 2025, prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida alleged. Current Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo has appeared in the NBA Finals twice. NBAE via Getty Images Advertisement Over a three-year period, Perez, also a retired 25-year-veteran of the Miami Police Department, allegedly sold $2 million worth of gear that he lifted from the team's equipment room, according to prosecutors. Perez is accused of pedaling the stolen jerseys at a steep discount. That 2013 James Finals jersey was auctioned at Sotheby's in 2023 and raked in $3.7 million — making it the third most expensive jersey in the auction house's history, ESPN reported — but it was originally sold by Perez for merely $100,000, the feds alleged. Advertisement The jersey was from Game 7 of the 2013 Finals in which James torched the San Antonio Spurs for 37 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in the championship-clinching game. LeBron James' 2013 Game 7 NBA Finals jersey was amongst the many items allegedly stolen by Perez and resold on the cheap. AFP via Getty Images When police officials raided Perez' home on April 3, they found hundreds more pieces of memorabilia, including more game-worn jerseys, stashed in his Miami-area home, according to the release. Many of the stolen items were intended to be displayed in a future Miami Heat museum, the team told federal investigators. Perez is charged with transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce.
