James Van Der Beek was candid with kids over cancer battle
The former Dawson's Creek star - who has Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, six, and Jeremiah, two, with wife Kimberly - was diagnosed with stage 3 colo-rectal cancer last year and didn't want to hide the news from his broos because "they know" when he's not doing well.
Speaking on Today, he said: 'I'm far from an expert, but our approach was just to be as honest as possible, as honest to the degree of their understanding, right? Because they know.
"They can sense that Dad's having a tough day.
"They know if Dad's in pain. They know, and so by not telling them, I think you're confusing them even more."
James has found "a lot of beauty" in his health struggles because of the way his kids have responded.
He said: "I have kids making me tea. 'Dad, what do you need?' There's been a lot of beauty that's come out of it, but I would love to save everybody this journey, which is why I'm saying get screened."
The 48-year-old actor advised other parents in a similar situation to share the news with their children as they will be surprised by the resilience of youngsters.
He said: "When you tell them what you're doing, and you tell them the approach, they can see it and they can feel it, and I think it's also your journey is their journey."
At the moment, James is "feeling great" but views battling the disease as a "full-time job".
He said: "Today, I'm feeling great, yeah. It's been a journey. There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is – I call it a full-time job."
James has made a number of changes to his life, including practicing yoga and trying the keto diet and has learned to slow down.
He told Today.com: "[I've been finding] the beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job," he tells TODAY.com.
And he is happy he has continued to work, with a role in upcoming TV series Elle.
He said: "The greatest thing about work is a cancer doesn't exist between action and cut.
"It was fun to drop in and just have a blast because it's such a great cast, a great production, and everybody out there is really talented."

Freakier Friday was harder to make than Freaky Friday because the sequel focused on two adults instead of an adult and a teenager, Jamie Lee Curtis has said. The 66-year-old actress has returned as Tess Coleman alongside Lindsay Lohan's Anna Coleman for the Disney comedy, and Curtis has now explained that the original 2003 movie - which saw her character swap bodies with her teenage daughter - was easier to make than Freakier Friday due to the 'black-and-white' differences between adults and teenagers. She explained to 'In Freaky Friday, it's really easy - adult, teenager. Adults stand up like this, teenagers slump. It was so black-and-white, so clear. 'In this, it's a much more subtle shift, and we had to find it with words, and language, and body behavior, and mannerisms and stuff. So, that's way more challenging because it's not as easy to think that you're getting it right.' Curtis added the dynamic she has with her step-granddaughter Lily Davies (Sophie Hammons) - with whom she swaps bodies with in Freakier Friday - wasn't something she was used to, and compared it to her experience playing Donna Berzatto in The Bear's second season. She said: 'With Donna, I knew I was getting it right because I know her. I don't know a Lily. I really don't, so it was harder for me to make sure I was actually getting it right.' Controversial US comedian Matt Rife buys the Annabelle doll
US comedian Matt Rife and YouTuber Elton Castee announced over the weekend that they've purchased the home the infamous Annabelle doll resides in. The doll was made famous by The Conjuring movie series that was based on the work of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warren claimed the foll was possessed by an evil spirit. Annabelle resides in the Warren's former home in Connecticut on the east coast of the US. Rife will be the legal guardian of the Annabelle doll, and the entire haunted collection, for at least the next five years. He and Castee plan to open the Warren home — in Monroe, Connecticut — for overnight stays and museum tours. They're doing it so that people can experience and learn all about the building's haunted history, Rife said. 'If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted,' Rife said. Rife said The Conjuring films have always been his favourite scary movies. 'I'm incredibly honoured to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history,' he said. Tony Spera, the Warrens' son-in-law and co-director of the late couple's organisation, New England Society for Psychic Research, clarified to that he and his wife still own the Warrens' collection, including the Annabelle doll, and are only leasing them to Rife and Castee. 'We have no plans to ever 'sell' the artifacts,' he said in a statement. Ed and Lorraine Warren's paranormal investigations were turned into the horror movies The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun. Actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play Ed and Lorraine in the franchise. The Conjuring: Last Rites is the latest film in the series and will be released in September. In the three standalone films about Annabelle, the doll is given as a gift to a nursing student who noticed strange occurrences with the doll. The nurse and her roommate call the Warrens, who pronounce the doll 'demonically possessed,' remove it from the home and encase it 'in a glass box to contain the evil spirited entity', according to New England Society for Psychic Research. Ed Warren died in 2006 at 79, and Lorraine Warren died in 2019 at 92. The New England Society for Psychic Research did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rife's announcement comes less than a month after paranormal investigator and Annabelle doll handler Dan Rivera died on the Devils on the Run Tour, which features the Annabelle doll. Rivera, 54, was found dead in a Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, hotel room on July 13. According to E! News, a July 16 police report labelled his death as 'natural', but a final cause of death won't be determined until an autopsy is completed.
