Freddie Mercury's brutal Princess Diana snub at Live Aid that raised eyebrows
Princess Diana charmed millions of people across the world, including celebrities - but Freddie Mercury seemingly had no interest in schmoozing with royalty.
In 1985, thousands of people gathered at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid: a charity concert to raise money for those struggling with the famine in Ethiopia.
The concert, which was broadcast to more than one billion people around the world, was also attended by royal couple Princess Diana and the then Prince Charles, who watched on from the royal box.
One of the day's most anticipated performances came from iconic rock band Queen, who have since gone on to perform for royalty many times. Band members Brian May and Roger Taylor went on to headline the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee concert in 2022, and both received OBEs throughout their career.
However, during Live Aid, the late Freddie Mercury had no such desire to mix with the royals, opting not to join Taylor and May in the royal box to watch the performance in the company of Charles and Diana.
In an interview with The Express, Freddie's close friend and long-term assistant, Peter Freestone, revealed that Freddie simply had 'better' things to do backstage at Live Aid than mingle with the royals.
He said: "Even at Live Aid, you see Brian May and Roger Taylor in the royal box. Freddie didn't go. He was more interested in being with friends backstage, talking with Elton John, hanging out with his people. His friends were always the most important to him."
Despite choosing not to spend his time with Charles and Diana, there has long been a rumour that Freddie Mercury did have a level of friendship with Diana, with the pair allegedly having a wild night together at a gay bar in South London.
According to urban legend, Freddie and Diana struck up a friendship and bonded over their love of the sitcom The Golden Girls, along with celebrities like Rupert Everett and Kenny Everett.
Kenny's friend Cleo Rocos said: "The group spent the afternoon drinking champagne in front of reruns of The Golden Girls with the sound turned down and improvising show dialogue with a much naughtier storyline."
The evening quickly got wilder, with Diana allegedly wanting to tag along with the rest of the group as they planned to party the night away at a famous South London gay bar, the appropriately named Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
According to Rocos, they disguised the princess as a man in a baseball cap, sunglasses and army bomber jacket, as she said: "When we walked in ... we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it."
Despite the years of rumours over the wild night, Peter Freestone debunked the claims as he told Express: "No, not at all. Maybe Diana went with Kenny but Freddie wasn't there. He never met her."

Freddie Flintoff reunites with 'superhero' medics who treated him after Top Gear crash
The former cricketer and presenter said he will be "eternally grateful" to the team of healthcare professionals who treated him following his Top Gear crash in 2022 Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff has returned to the hospital where he was treated after his devastating Top Gear crash to thank the team of 'superheroes' who cared for him. The former cricketer and presenter, 47, suffered severe facial injuries when he flipped a three-wheel car whilst filming an episode of Top Gear in December 2022. He later revealed that he thought he 'was dead' and remembered being 'frightened to death'. Freddie was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, southwest London, where he underwent surgery and has since returned to the hospital. It comes after Top Gear host admitted he 'never got along' with Jeremy Clarkson as he made a bold statement. Upon Freddie's return to St George's, he said: "I just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff at St George's. I came here probably the lowest I've ever been, in need of help and the expertise, the love, the compassion they showed me was incredible." He added: "I'll be eternally grateful - absolute superheroes." Freddie met with maxillofacial surgeon Jahrad Haq, who was on call the day that the presenter came in with his injuries. Haq said: 'A lot of injuries are managed at a more junior level before escalating, so I knew this one was serious. Of all the trauma cases I've seen in over 20 years, this was among the most complex.' In the Disney+ documentary Flintoff, which came out earlier this year, the surgeon explained that Freddie's injuries included broken and lost teeth, and that elements of his upper jaw bone were fractured and displaced. Haq said that Freddie "lost a really significant portion of his upper lip - the skin and some of the underlying muscle - and also his lower lip'. Freddie, meanwhile, said he didn't think he would be able to get through the situation, explaining: "This sounds awful: part of me wishes I'd been killed. Part of me thinks 'I wish I had died.' I didn't want to kill myself. I don't want to mistake the two things. But I was thinking: 'This would have been so much easier.'" The sports star said his "biggest fear" was that he no longer had a face after he found himself being dragged along the track during the crash. He said: "I thought my face had come off. I was frightened to death." Following the crash, BBC Studios released a statement referring to an independent investigation held in 2023. It said: "[The review] found that while BBC Studios had complied with the required BBC policies and industry best practice in making the show, there were important learnings which would need to be rigorously applied to future Top Gear UK productions." Since the crash, Freddie has been working as a cricket coach for the England Lions, something which his family said has been vital to his recovery. His wife, Rachael, explained: "When Andrew needed it most, cricket was there for him… It sounds a bit weird saying it, a bit over the top to say, but I do think cricket saved him. It gave him a reason for being, again."

The news comes as it was reported that Prince Harry will 'never be forgiven' by two major royals despite reconciliation hope . Speaking about Diana's death in 1997, Eliza said: "As a child, I realised the enormity of the loss for my father and family. It was only later that I came to understand the significance of the loss of her as a figure in the world." In 2023, Amelia married her long-term boyfriend Greg Mallett in a mountain-top ceremony in Cape Town, surrounded by her siblings. And last year, the twins turned out to support older cousin William at a fundraiser for the London Air Ambulance. Meanwhile, Kitty read psychology at the University of Cape Town and has modelled for brands including Dolce & Gabbana, for which she has been a muse, and Bvlgari. She also scored invites to the wedding of her cousins William and Harry, and her Instagram account shows her at fashion shows in cities such as London and Milan.
