Hannah Hampton threw Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll's notes into crowd during 2025 Euro final penalty shoot-out

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton revealed that she threw penalty notes belonging to her Spanish counterpart, Cata Coll, into the crowd during the European Championship final-deciding shoot-out.
The 24-year-old explained in an interview with TalkSport that she discarded the water bottle which belonged to Spain goalkeeper Coll, and contained notes detailing penalty statistics, into the contingent of English fans, while instead writing her own notes upon her arm to ensure Coll could not do similarly.
'The Spanish keeper had it (penalty notes) on her bottle,' Hampton said. 'So I thought when she was going in goal I'll just pick it up and chuck it into the English fans so she can't have it.'
She added: 'I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that, so I put it on my arm.
Hampton saved two spot-kicks while Salma Paralluelo fired her penalty wide as England defended their European title with a 3-1 victory over world champions Spain in the shoot-out. The game had finished 1-1 after goals from Alessia Russo and Spain's Mariona Caldentey.
'It wasn't hard, when she's gone in the goal it's on its own isn't it? You just pick it up,' the England international said. 'When she saw my bottle in there instead, mine's blank but it has the same sponsors and stuff so I just put mine in there, chucked hers in with the fans and she had an empty bottle.
'She was walking back and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing.'
The Chelsea goalkeeper had played a pivotal role in keeping England in the tournament just ten days earlier, saving twice in the 3-2 penalty shoot-out quarter-final win over Sweden despite Sarina Wiegman's side missing four of their kicks.
Hampton described that shoot-out as 'traumatic' for the England squad, and explained how head coach Wiegman stepped up her team's penalty preparations for the final two rounds of the tournament in Switzerland.
'From then on Sarina was saying 'you're taking penalties every day whether you like it or not',' Hampton said.
'We were (doing so) before in the small-sided games, we'd have a penalty for each at the start of the games but afterwards it was about taking two or three then after training, Anna (Moorhouse) and Khiara (Keating) faced about 100 penalties a day.'
Hampton was one of five England players listed in the 30-player shortlist for the Women's Ballon d'Or on Thursday, and emerged as Wiegman's No 1 following the international retirement of Mary Earps in May.

Community Shield: TV details, Liverpool team news, referee, Diogo Jota tributes

Liverpool and Crystal Palace will pay tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva ahead of Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley. This will be Liverpool's first competitive game since the tragic events of last month, when the siblings passed away in northern Spain, although the Reds have honored Jota throughout the summer and ahead of every preseason game. Wreaths were laid on the pitch by Phil Thompson and Jon Uriarte, Athletic Bilbao's club president, ahead of Monday's double-headed friendly at Anfield. Similar tributes are planned for this weekend by the FA, which has confirmed that wreaths will be placed on the pitch before Sunday's game, while a period of silence will be held. The Reds will also mark Jota's devastating death next week ahead of the Premier League clash against Bournemouth. Meanwhile, Liverpool will wear its new Adidas away kit for the first time on Sunday. The FA's official media release describes the off-white shirt as "ecru." It will be worn along with black shorts. The game will be broadcast by TNT Sports in the UK, and audiences in the United States can watch on ESPN. The Community Shield will kick off at 3 pm local time; that's 10 am ET and 7 am PT. Referee Chris Kavanagh will be in charge of proceedings in the capital, with VAR also in operation, as will goal-line technology, semi-automated offside technology. Unusually, both teams will be able to make six substitutes, but name nine on the bench as is the case with Premier League games. Should the game finish as a draw after 90 minutes, then it will go straight to penalties, bypassing extra-time. Sunday is Liverpool's first Community Shield since it beat Manchester City at the King Power Stadium in 2022 and the 25th time playing in the annual curtain-raiser. Palace, in contrast, has never played in a Community Shield before. Should the Eagles win on Sunday, Oliver Glasner would become the first Austrian to win the competition, while Arne Slot would be the first Dutch coach to lift the trophy if Liverpool triumphs. The Reds will be without Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley for the encounter, while Eddie Nketiah, Cheick Doucoure, Caleb Kporha, and Matheus Franca are missing for Palace.

German soccer club defends pulling out of buying Israeli player Shon Weissman over his Gaza posts

DÜSSELDORF, Germany (AP) — The chairman of Fortuna Düsseldorf has defended the German soccer club's decision to pull out of signing Israeli player Shon Weissman after fan backlash over his contentious social media posts about Gaza, and said it's 'absurd' to accuse the second-division team of antisemitism. Düsseldorf announced Tuesday that it would not sign Weissman from Spanish team Granada despite having been in advanced negotiations. Fans had opposed the planned signing of the 29-year-old Weissman because of his social media posts expressing support for Israel's conduct in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Weissman's Instagram account was set to 'private' on Saturday. In the social media post on Tuesday announcing the decision, the club did not say why it had called off the transfer. But Fortuna issued a statement on Friday saying Weissman's 'statements on social media and the subsequent handling of them were not consistent with our values.' Chairman Klaus Allofs defended the club's decision before the team's match against Hannover on Saturday, but acknowledged that a faster process to reach the decision would have been preferable. 'I wouldn't say it was a mistake. We tried to sign a player and I think that's legitimate,' Allofs said. 'It's also part of our values, that we don't limit ourselves with prejudices and rule things out from the start.' Allofs said the club deliberately waited to consult with Jewish community members in Düsseldorf before deciding against the signing. Asked about accusations of antisemitism, Allofs said: 'It's absurd, to put it bluntly.' Israel's air and ground campaign has killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine. Hamas-led militants triggered the war when they stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 people. Shortly after those attacks, Weissman sat out Granada's Spanish league game at Osasuna over security concerns. Authorities had been worried about a potentially hostile atmosphere created by Osasuna supporters angered by Weissman's social media posts. ___ AP soccer:
