Hannah Hampton received social media abuse after viral interview

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has expressed regret over revealing she threw Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll's water bottle, containing penalty notes, into the crowd during the Euro 2025 final shootout. Hampton, who saved two penalties in England's 3-1 victory over Spain, stated she has received significant online hate since disclosing the incident. The hate comments notably appeared on a social media tribute Hampton posted for her grandfather, who passed away shortly before the tournament. Spain's Cata Coll has since disputed Hampton's account, suggesting it was not her bottle or that the notes were not as crucial as implied. Hampton clarified her actions were not disrespectful and acknowledged the challenges of public life and online scrutiny, despite her belief at the time that it was Coll's bottle.

Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll hits back at England star Hannah Hampton's claim that she threw her cheat sheet into the CROWD during Euros final penalty shootout

Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll has responded to Hannah Hampton's claim that she threw her 'cheat sheet' into the crowd during the Euros final penalty shootout. England won the shootout in Switzerland two weeks ago, with Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles and Chloe Kelly all converting from the spot as the Lionesses retained their European crown. Hampton saved two penalties from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati, while Salma Paralluelo missed. England goalkeeper Hampton stated during an interview that she noticed that Coll's cheat sheet for the penalty shootout containing information about England's players was on her water bottle so she picked it up and threw it to the fans. However, that claim has now been disputed by Coll, who wrote on X: 'Okay, okay, calm down, calm down. At least if it were true...'. Speaking to talkSPORT, Hampton said: 'The Spanish keeper had it (the penalty information) on her bottle, so I thought when she was going in goal, I'd just pick it up and chuck it into the English fans so she can't have it. 'I don't ever put it on a bottle because anyone can do that so I put it on my arm.' An incredulous Sam Matterface replied: Picked up her bottle and threw it?' And Hampton replied: 'Yeah, it wasn't hard. When she's gone in the goal, it's on its own isn't it? It's in the towel.' When Coll returned to her towel, she was visibly confused to find a replacement bottle – which Hampton had put there – but no notes, and was left searching for her original one. 'She was walking back to take the penalty and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, and I was just trying not to burst out laughing, being like, "I don't know what's happening!".' Matterface added: 'This is happening at the key moment in a penalty shootout for the title of European champions?' to which Hampton replied: 'Yeah, you've got to do something, haven't you?'. Hampton was amongst five Lionesses to be nominated for the Women's Ballon d'Or, with Lucy Bronze, Kelly, Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson also being shortlisted.

Hannah Hampton: I threw Spain keeper's bottle to wreck penalty preparations

The England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has revealed that she threw her Spanish counterpart's water bottle into the crowd during the Euro 2025 final penalty shoot-out. 'The Spanish keeper had it on her bottle,' Hampton told talkSPORT. 'So I thought, when she was going in goal, 'I'll just pick it up and throw it into the English fans so she can't have it.' ' The move stopped Cata Coll from looking at her notes — which were printed on the bottle — showing where to dive for each of England's penalties. The Lionesses won the penalty shoot-out 3-1, with the 24-year-old saving two penalties, from Aitana Bonmatí and Mariona Caldentey. 'She saw my bottle there instead, mine's blank but it has the same sponsors and stuff, so I just put mine there, chucked hers in with the fans and she had an empty bottle,' Hampton said. 'She was walking back and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing.' Hampton, who plays for Chelsea, had opted to write her notes on her arm instead. 'I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that [throw it into the crowd], so that's why I put it on my arm,' she said. 'It wasn't hard, when she's in the goal it's on its own, isn't it? You just pick it up.' Coll did, however, still manage to save two of England's penalties. She stopped Beth Mead's second attempt, after the forward had to retake the first penalty of the shoot-out. Coll then saved from the England captain, Leah Williamson, but it was not enough to stop the Lionesses retaining their title. This was Hampton's first major tournament as England's first-choice goalkeeper, taking over from Mary Earps after the 32-year-old announced her international retirement in May, and she played a huge role in keeping her side in the tournament. She also saved two penalties in the quarter-final shoot-out against Sweden to help her side through, with Sarina Wiegman's team ensuring that the goalkeepers were well briefed in the eventuality of penalties. 'Before the games we as a 'keeper group have meetings and we analyse every penalty that each individual from the opposing team has had,' Hampton said. 'I think Alexia [Putellas] had 46 penalties we had to sit there and watch, but [they did the same for] all the players, even if they've only taken one penalty back in 2019.' After her efforts this summer, Hampton is one of five members of England's Euro 2025-winning squad to have been nominated for the Women's Ballon d'Or. Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly have also been nominated.

Hannah Hampton threw Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll's notes into crowd during 2025 Euro final penalty shoot-out

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton revealed that she threw penalty notes belonging to her Spanish counterpart, Cata Coll, into the crowd during the European Championship final-deciding shoot-out. The 24-year-old explained in an interview with TalkSport that she discarded the water bottle which belonged to Spain goalkeeper Coll, and contained notes detailing penalty statistics, into the contingent of English fans, while instead writing her own notes upon her arm to ensure Coll could not do similarly. 'The Spanish keeper had it (penalty notes) on her bottle,' Hampton said. 'So I thought when she was going in goal I'll just pick it up and chuck it into the English fans so she can't have it.' She added: 'I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that, so I put it on my arm. Hampton saved two spot-kicks while Salma Paralluelo fired her penalty wide as England defended their European title with a 3-1 victory over world champions Spain in the shoot-out. The game had finished 1-1 after goals from Alessia Russo and Spain's Mariona Caldentey. 'It wasn't hard, when she's gone in the goal it's on its own isn't it? You just pick it up,' the England international said. 'When she saw my bottle in there instead, mine's blank but it has the same sponsors and stuff so I just put mine in there, chucked hers in with the fans and she had an empty bottle. 'She was walking back and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing.' The Chelsea goalkeeper had played a pivotal role in keeping England in the tournament just ten days earlier, saving twice in the 3-2 penalty shoot-out quarter-final win over Sweden despite Sarina Wiegman's side missing four of their kicks. Hampton described that shoot-out as 'traumatic' for the England squad, and explained how head coach Wiegman stepped up her team's penalty preparations for the final two rounds of the tournament in Switzerland. 'From then on Sarina was saying 'you're taking penalties every day whether you like it or not',' Hampton said. 'We were (doing so) before in the small-sided games, we'd have a penalty for each at the start of the games but afterwards it was about taking two or three then after training, Anna (Moorhouse) and Khiara (Keating) faced about 100 penalties a day.' Hampton was one of five England players listed in the 30-player shortlist for the Women's Ballon d'Or on Thursday, and emerged as Wiegman's No 1 following the international retirement of Mary Earps in May.
