Unemployed man pleads guilty to setting fire to MBJB tow truck
The accused, Wan Muhammad Nasrul W Ahmad, 31, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok.
According to the charge sheet, he committed mischief by using petrol to set fire to an MBJB tow truck at the vehicle storage depot at Lot 1, Johor Baru Waterfront, on August 15 at about 11.07 am, causing losses of RM24,000.
He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine.
When asked to play the CCTV footage of the incident, Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu informed the court that it could not be played at that time.
The court postponed sentencing to Wednesday (Aug 20) to allow the footage to be submitted and played.
Although Siti Fatimah did not offer bail, the court granted bail of RM7,000 with conditions, including monthly police reporting, surrendering his passport, and refraining from disturbing prosecution witnesses.
The accused told the court that, if given the chance, he wanted to apologise to MBJB and claimed he had his reasons for the act.
The court reminded him he could only appeal against bail, not sentencing.
Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Navina also led the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
According to case facts, an MBJB enforcement officer at the depot counter heard an explosion, ran outside, and saw the tow truck on fire.
CCTV footage allegedly showed the accused pouring petrol and igniting the rear of the truck before a police report was lodged.
Police later seized a grey aluminium container and a lighter at the scene.
Johor Baru Selatan OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident was believed to have been triggered by the suspect's dissatisfaction after his Perodua Axia was towed a day earlier.
The suspect, who had no money to pay the compound, allegedly set the truck on fire, causing an estimated RM10,000 in losses.
"Police apprehended the suspect on the same day at 1.06 pm and seized several items, including an aluminium container and a lighter,' he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 17).

Muslim men in Terengganu face two years in jail, RM3,000 fine for missing Friday prayers
PETALING JAYA: A hefty fine of up to RM3,000 and even up to two years in jail now await Muslim men in Terengganu who miss Friday prayers without a valid reason. Terengganu information, dakwah and syariah empowerment committee chairman Dr Muhammad Khalil said the punishments would only be imposed as a last resort if reminders were ignored. 'The installation of reminder banners in mosque compounds throughout the state is aimed at issuing a clear warning about the obligation to perform Friday prayers. 'Muslims should view the enforcement of this law as an effort to educate and uphold the dignity of religion, especially in fostering awareness among the younger generation,' he reportedly told Sinar Harian on Tuesday (Aug 19). Khalil said enforcement of the new change will be carried out through public reports alongside patrols and joint operations by the Terengganu Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) and local authorities. He said the new provision is part of the implementation of the state's previous amendments to the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment (Takzir) 2016, which was passed several years ago. 'Previously, enforcement action was taken only against those who missed Friday prayers three times consecutively, but with this amendment, action can be taken if it is missed even once,' he added.

JOHOR BAHRU: Local authorities in Johor have issued 2,058 littering summonses worth more than RM335,000 from the beginning of this year until July. Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon confirmed that the compounds resulted from enforcement actions carried out by the involved local authorities. He stated that the state government is serious about addressing the long-standing waste disposal problem, including establishing a Special Committee in collaboration with various agencies. 'Under the direction of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Johor Chief Minister, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, this committee was established to strengthen enforcement and combat illegal dumping,' he said in a Facebook post. Ling explained that various action plans have been drawn up, including intensifying awareness campaigns and anti-littering activities. He also confirmed that integrated enforcement would be carried out involving various agencies to ensure the public complies with the law and maintains environmental cleanliness. 'We hope that through these various approaches, the public will become more aware of the punishment that awaits them,' he added. 'This is in case they litter in public areas, which affects the environment and drainage systems,' he concluded. – Bernama

Prosecution of five teens related only to bullying, not to death of Zara Qairina
The AGC explained that the decision to charge the five teenagers under Section 507C(1) was based on a thorough review of the investigation papers. 19 Aug 2025 08:14pm Five teenage girls will be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court in Sabah this Wednesday over allegations of bullying Zara Qairina by issuing threats through communication. KUALA LUMPUR - The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) today clarified that the prosecution of five minors in Zara Qairina Mahathir's case was made under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code because it is related to bullying only and not to the death of the 13-year-old girl. In a statement issued today, the AGC explained that the decision to charge the five teenagers under Section 507C(1) was based on a thorough review of the investigation papers. "Therefore, the AGC reiterates that the charge under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code in this case is grounded on evidence and facts obtained from the completed investigation,' the statement read. The clarification follows a press statement by the lawyer representing Noraida Lamat, the mother of the Zara Qairina, who had requested a postponement of the prosecution process and proposed that the teens be charged under Section 507D(2), which carries a heavier penalty. Zara Qairina was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a religious school dormitory building in Papar on July 16, before being pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital. The AGC responded by stating that the argument raised by the lawyer, that if the teens plead guilty to the lesser charge, they could not later be charged under Section 507D(2) or a more serious offence due to the double jeopardy clause under Article 7(2) of the Federal Constitution, was speculative and not supported by concrete facts. The AGC also confirmed that an inquest will still proceed to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina's death. Yesterday, Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed that the five minors will be charged in the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, while the Kota Kinabalu Coroner's Court set Sept 3 to commence the inquest proceedings into Zara Qairina's death. Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the school dormitory on the morning of July 16 in Papar. - BERNAMA
