Lionel Scaloni's reigning world champions fell behind in the first half, courtesy of Luis Diaz's brilliant solo goal.
The match became heated in the second period, with a series of flashpoints occurring in the final 20 minutes.
Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez was sent off on 70 minutes for a high challenge on Kevin Castano.
The horror kick left Castano bleeding from his head.
In the aftermath of the incident, Messi engaged in a war of words with long-time rival James Rodriguez.
Having battled for several years while playing for their countries, they were also on opposite sides of the El Clasico Real Madrid-Barcelona divide.
The pair tried to cover their mouths during the conversation, although Argentine outlet TyC Sports claim to have made out some of their words.
They claim that Rodriguez, 33, responded to Messi's initial comment by asking: "But why?"

The outlet then alleges that Messi said: "Yes, yes. You said we were helped in the final.

'Do you want me to send you off' - Lionel Messi reaches boiling point with referee as Inter Miami woes worsen
Messi is believed to have been referring to Argentina's 1-0 victory over Colombia in last year's Copa America final.
Back in March, Rodriguez reflected on the match: "Due to external factors, I think we couldn't have been champions.
"The referee had a big influence and didn't award us one or two penalties."
The former Everton and Real Madrid star, who now plays for Club Leon in Mexico, refused to be drawn on his exchange with Messi after last night's match.
Asked about the subject, the attacking midfielder said: "What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch."
Reflecting on the incident, one fan joked on social media: "Forget the Enzo red card. Messi just traumatized James Rodriguez on live television with his words."
While a second wrote: "Yeah… he said some harsh words to James and it pains me cause James seems like a genuinely nice guy."
Shortly after his exchange with Rodriguez, Messi was surprisingly substituted, despite 10-man Argentina needing a goal.
The move proved to be an inspired one, as his replacement Exequiel Palacios set up Thiago Almada's equaliser just a few minutes later.
After the 1-1 draw, boss Scaloni revealed: "Leo wasn't going to come off, but he ended up coming off near the end.
"He told me it was better for him to come off, and so we decided to change him.
"The good thing we always showed, with 10 men and without Messi, is that we kept looking, not giving up on a ball. That makes us very satisfied."
Just prior to going off, Messi had been involved in an altercation with Daniel Munoz.
The former Barcelona star appeared to throw an elbow at the Crystal Palace man.

Final event of Michael Johnson's revolutionary £9million Grand Slam Track embarrassingly CANCELLED

The four-time Olympic gold medal winner launched the venture last year Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE LAST event of Michael Johnson's new athletics league in Los Angeles has been cancelled due to cash woes. The pilot season of the Grand Slam Track was due to climax in California on June 28-29 following race meetings in Kingston, Miami and Philadelphia. It is a surprise move to finish the inaugural series prematurely, especially when British stars Zharnel Hughes, Daryll Neita and Matthew Hudson-Smith were all planning to run. And it throws into doubt the whole business model for the GST for next year, especially as they pay top athletes $100,000 (£74,000) for winning each Slam. It began in the Jamaican capital in April but races took place in front of largely empty stands. Johnson wanted to focus on the US TV market this time but there is a chance he might look to Europe for the 2026 edition with London a favourable destination. Sources close to the event say the ongoing riots in the city which are against Donald Trump's controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policy were not the overriding factor in the decision to cancel. Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medal sprinter, hoped to "revolutionise the track landscape" with the venture. Johnson has been critical of the Diamond League for failing to bring in new audiences. Olympic legend and third fastest woman of all time demolishes parents at school sports day He said last year: " love this sport and owe everything I have to this sport. "It's been a shame for me to watch [the Diamond League] over the last couple of decades since I retired not be able to continue to provide the same amazing moments to people, outside of just the Olympics. "Over three billion people are watching the sport once a year during major championships and have an expressed interest to continue watching the sport if there was a place to do so. "So I see [Grand Slam Track] as a real opportunity from that perspective."

Gordon aiming to end career on high with Hearts and Scotland at World Cup

Craig Gordon is aiming to end his illustrious career on a high by having a good season with Hearts and helping Scotland to the World Cup. The veteran goalkeeper, who will turn 43 in December, has signed on for another year at Tynecastle in a bid to help his boyhood club improve on a disappointing campaign. He also has his sights set on a swansong in North America where the World Cup will be held next summer and believes the current squad have enough to reach the biggest stage of all. The national team haven't qualified for the tournament since 1998, and Gordon believes it would mark the perfect end to a storied career. Hearts will take on newly promoted English Premier League side Sunderland to mark his testimonial year on July 26. Speaking about his decision to keep playing for another year, he said: 'As last season wore on, towards the end, when things started to calm down a bit and we were down to one game a week, the workload was still manageable. 'For most of the first part of the season, I thought that would be my last season, but as the season progressed I still felt good and decided I still had another year left in me. 'So, it was a good decision, I think. I am excited again to get back to pre-season and ready to go again. 'It wasn't a great season for anybody at the club, so there was always that in the background, but personally for me I didn't think it was too bad, I had some good moments throughout the season and I think not having that good last moment, to be able to go out on a high, I am still really motivated to get out there and do as best as I can and be the best goalkeeper I can be. 'So there was that, and with Scotland as well the World Cup is going to be decided over the next six games within four or five months of the season starting, so it's not that far away. 'That was all the reasons I needed to keep going and keep giving it my very best.' Gordon first signed for the Jambos in 1999 and made his professional debut while out on loan at Cowdenbeath as a teenager in 2001. In a career that has spanned 24 years, he has also played for Sunderland and Celtic, winning three Scottish Cups, five Premiership titles and five League Cups while helping the Hoops to a historic quadruple treble between 2017 and 2020. He has also earned 81 Scotland caps and insists he is motivated as ever for further success domestically and at international level. He said: 'I am motivated on both fronts. There have been a lot of changes at Hearts, and there's a new management team coming in. Also, we have six games with Scotland, and I believe in that squad. 'I think we can beat anybody on any given day, so we have got great ability there and the chance to get ourselves to a World Cup. 'It will be difficult, there are other good teams in the group, but I still think we have that opportunity and it's an exciting time at Hearts with the new manager and a host of new players. 'So there is a lot to be positive about on both fronts.' SFA chief delivers update on Steve Clarke's Scotland future

Read more: Maxwell was recently asked by Sky Sports if he expects the upcoming qualification campaign for the World Cup to be Clarke's last as head coach. "Steve is absolutely desperate to get us to a World Cup," he said. "We've got a squad that, when fully fit and firing, is very much capable of getting us to a World Cup. "It's the final piece in the jigsaw for Steve and the players." Clarke previously admitted that there is a '75 per cent' chance he won't renew his deal following the next World Cup. Maxwell was quizzed on whether the SFA will offer the boss an extension: "That's a conversation for the time," he answered. "We've been very clear throughout this that we'll have those discussions when the time is right. "There's always an element of that [planning ahead for a new head coach] if I'm doing my job properly. "There's always an eye on who's available because managers come and go for a variety of different reasons. "There's always an eye on who's available, but the focus at the moment is on Steve and the team and making sure they get to USA, Mexico and Canada next year." Scotland kick off their World Cup qualification campaign against Denmark in Copenhagen this September.
