World on brink of climate breakthrough as fossil fuels ‘run out of road', UN chief says

The Guardian22-07-2025
The world is on the brink of a breakthrough in the climate fight and fossil fuels are running out of road, the UN chief said on Tuesday, as he urged countries to funnel support into low-carbon energy.
More than nine in 10 renewable power projects globally are now cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. Solar power is about 41% cheaper than the lowest-cost fossil fuel alternative, and onshore wind generation is less than half the price of fossil fuels, according to a report from the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Costs have been driven down by the increasingly widespread use of the technologies, a huge focus on low-carbon manufacturing in China, and burgeoning investment in the sector, reaching $2tn last year – which was $800bn more than went into fossil fuels, and an increase of 70% in the last decade.
The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said: 'We are on the cusp of a new era. Fossil fuels are running out of road. The sun is rising on a clean energy age.'
Guterres said countries seeking energy security against geopolitical threats and lower costs for consumers amid a global cost-of-living crisis, must choose renewables. 'The greatest threat to energy security today is fossil fuels. They leave economies and people at the mercy of price shocks, supply disruptions and geopolitical turmoil,' he said. 'There are no price spikes for sunlight. No embargoes on wind.'
Energy demand is still rising fast, however, driven by the demand for cooling as temperatures rise beyond bearable levels in many countries, and by the soaring demand for power for IT datacentres, including for AI. If even a proportion of this increase is devoted to fossil fuels it will become impossible to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, as countries have vowed to do.
The secretary general called on big technology companies to commit to sourcing 100% of their electricity demands from low-carbon generation by 2030.
Nearly every country is now obliged to come up with a new national plan on greenhouse gas emissions under the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Guterres said it made economic sense for countries to use those plans, due in September, to funnel support into low-carbon energy, and reduce the billions in subsidies that still go to fossil fuels.
'This transformation is fundamentally about energy security and people's security. It's about smart economics,' he said, in a major speech in New York, which was delayed from last month by Israel's attack on Iran. 'We have passed the point of no return [to fossil fuels].'
Francesco La Camera, director general of Irena, said: 'The cost-competitiveness of renewables is today's reality. New renewable power outcompetes fossil fuels on cost, offering a clear path to affordable, secure and sustainable energy.'
Fossil fuel interests are still strong in many countries, however. In the US, incentives for clean power have been cut by Donald Trump, who is seeking to boost coal, gas and oil. In China, new coal-fired power stations are still being planned, despite the country's strong showing on renewables, and in March, India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, celebrated the country's billionth tonne of coal production.
La Camera said: 'Progress [on renewables] is not guaranteed. Rising geopolitical tensions, trade tariffs, and material supply constraints threaten to slow the momentum and drive up costs.'
There are concerns over the supplies of the critical minerals needed for renewable energy components, and infrastructure is also an issue, according to the report by Irena published on Tuesday and a separate report published by the UN at the same time. Although renewable generation is increasing rapidly around the world, investments in electricity grids are failing to keep up. For every $1 invested in generation, only about 60 cents is invested in national grids. For the energy transition needed, the investments need to be roughly at parity.
Guterres's speech marked a change in tone from the UN secretary general, who has raised the alarm in increasingly stark terms over the climate crisis in recent years. He warned in the Guardian in 2022 that the world would be 'doomed' if climate talks failed; in 2023 he said 'the era of global boiling' had arrived; last year he called fossil fuel companies 'the godfathers of climate chaos'.
This fresh intervention takes a notably more upbeat tone, focusing on the economic benefits of a shift to clean energy.
Bill Hare, chief executive of the Climate Analytics thinktank, said investors and governments should take note: 'Any investment in new fossil fuels now is a fool's gamble, while joining the race to renewables can only bring benefits – not just jobs and cheaper energy at stable prices, but energy independence and access where it's needed most. Developing regions like Africa have huge energy access needs, and even bigger renewable resources. What they need now is international finance to share in the renewables revolution.'
Kaysie Brown, associate director at the E3G thinktank, called for countries to bring forward strong national climate plans ahead of the UN's Cop30 summit in Brazil this November. 'The world now has both the technical solutions and the economic imperative to accelerate the clean energy transition – a transition essential for global stability and shared prosperity,' she said. 'But unlocking this opportunity demands bold leadership and deeper cooperation.'

My clever new fridge saves me hundreds on food AND electricity bills – it even has a cool Ring doorbell perk

Jamie Harris Published: Invalid Date, FRIDGES and freezers are getting in on the smart stuff these days - and they can save you a heap of money in the long-run too. The latest flash model from Samsung has done just that for me, both on food and my electricity bill. 5 5 There are a number of mind-boggling techy features your everyday fridge can't do too. Some are better as party tricks to show off to friends but the majority of them have turned out to be super handy in my house. The exact Samsung model I'm trying is the 621L Bespoke AI Series 9 Side-by-Side Fridge Freezer with AI Home (RS90F64EDTEU). So what's so special about it? Read on in my review below to find out. Samsung Side-by-Side Fridge Freezer review The fridge door has a little display which is your portal to a number of apps. More and more fridge freezers are adopting these sorts of screens - and at one point they were quite big. This one is small and unimposing, allowing you to access things like Spotify and YouTube. It's touch screen and voice powered, so you can essentially do away with having an Alexa or similar digital assistant in your kitchen, especially as the speaker can go pretty loud. The voice assistant is Samsung's own, Bixby, so you'll have to say "Hey Bixby" to summon anything. Samsung reveals genius way to help you save money on food using AI in your FRIDGE For the most part, I just use the touch screen - but there's one special trick that's very much Bixby's. And that's the ability to open the doors for you. At first, I dismissed this as a bit of a gimmick (and was what I referred to as a "party trick" earlier). However, truth be told, there have been times when I've been cooking, I have my hands full with items and suddenly this feature has come in handy. The handles do have sensors on them too that automatically opens the door for you when you simply hover your hand over it - I also thought was just plain lazy initially but I've grown to make that the norm all the time now. A minor annoyance to mention, sometimes when I opened the fridge door my elbow passed the sensor for the freezer door causing it to open too. 5 Saving money on food and more What I really care about is saving money and I'm shamefully aware that my food waste could be a whole lot better. Sometimes you forget, other times you have no idea what to do with that one ingredient. Well, Samsung's SmartThings helps you cut food waste, thereby reducing how much I spend on shopping. You can log items via the app on your phone - which is available on both Android and iOS, not just Samsung's handsets - or tap them in on your fridge screen, along with their use-by dates. While it's very manual, I've resorted to treating it as my shopping list app as opposed to just using my phone's notes feature as I did before. The fridge will also suggest recipes based on the ingredients logged for some easy ideas, crafted by the likes of Jamie Oliver and more. There are other ways the fridge helps you save money too. For instance, it learns your usage patterns so that energy is optimised at the right times. You can even tell it when you're on holiday so it'll go into an energy saving mode. The screen will tell you exactly how much electricity the fridge has used too (last month it was just shy of £10). And as there is a water and ice dispenser, the tech tells you when it's time to change the filter too. Inside When it comes to the primary function, keeping your food chilled and frozen, the inside is perfectly ordinary. In the fridge there are five shelves, as well as two fruit and veg compartments at the bottom. And there are four shelves with two storage draws along the bottom of the freezer. Another thing to note is that it's pretty quiet as a fridge freezer goes, despite being a pretty big appliance. 5 Ring doorbell trick My favourite trick of all, arguably, is the simplest. And that's integration with Ring doorbell. SmartThings is compatible with hundreds of smart home brands, not just devices made by Samsung, which is a rare treat. Once you've linked your Ring doorbell into the SmartThings app it means the fridge screen will alert you when someone is at the front door. You can even answer the call there and then, so another reason not to have another smart hub sitting around your kitchen. Samsung Side-by-Side Fridge Freezer: conclusion At £2,239, the 621L Bespoke AI Series 9 Side-by-Side Fridge Freezer with AI Home doesn't come cheap. But it's worth noting you get five year warranty for parts and labour, as well as 20 year warranty on digital inverter compressor. You can also knock up to £100 off if you recycle an old appliance with Samsung when making the purchase. But for £2,239 you get a premium, slick and feature-packed appliance that should save you hundreds - if not thousands - in the long run with those food and energy management features.

Beyond the F40 and 250 GTO, there's a world of Ferrari to discover. We highlight 5 forgotten Ferrari models that are now surprisingly undervalued and deserve more love. Like every other automaker, Hyundai recognizes that China is an important market. Claiming the vehicle as 'a new starting point,' the company recently revealed the electric Elexio SUV, which has shown impressive capabilities in early safety testing. Hyundai acknowledged that China is a 'must-fight place' for global companies, and the Elexio may help it compete with more established homegrown brands in the country. The automaker is targeting a CLTC driving range of 435 miles (roughly 320 miles using EPA testing) and says the SUV offers fast-charging, advanced technologies, and more. Early crash tests show the new SUV to offer above-average safety, with Hyundai citing its 'God's Hand' high-strength steel plating as a major factor in the tests. It features 360-degree body reinforcements and floor beams for better structural rigidity. Low-temperature battery evaluations found that the Elexio lost less driving range in low-temperature conditions, and it had no trouble operating in ultra-cold conditions. The Elexio is a bit smaller than the Tesla Model Y and will be offered in two configurations, including single- and dual-motor options. The single-motor powertrain offers 214 horsepower, and the dual setup has 312 hp. Both configurations will use LFP batteries from BYD's battery subsidiary, FinDream. Source: Image: Hyundai Hyundai also touted the crossover's ride quality, saying it has 'the highest suspension configuration in its class.' It features advanced dampers and hydraulic bushings, and the automaker said it reworked the suspension system more than 300 times before settling on the configuration. The Elexio is known as the Ioniq 5 of China, so it's unlikely that we'll see it on American streets anytime soon. It's built in China through Hyundai's partnership with BAIC and is expected to have a reasonable starting price of under $20,000. Hyundai plans to launch the vehicle in the third quarter of this year. About the Author Chris Teague View Profile
