Paytm founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma posted WhatsApp messages in which the fraudster introduced himself as "Vijay Shekhar Sharma" and asked him to save his "new phone number"
Titled 'Impersonating myself to me", Paytm founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma on Wednesday shared what appeared to be a humorous exchange between him and a scamster, who was allegedly trying to pose as him to extract sensitive information about the company's funds.
In a lengthy note on his X, Sharma posted a chain of WhatsApp messages in which the fraudster introduced himself as 'Vijay Shekhar Sharma" and asked him to save his 'new phone number". The encounter left internet users in splits, but spotlighted that not even those like him are spared when it comes to scamsters using sophisticated manoeuvres, advanced techniques, fake profiles, malicious links and impersonation.
In this case, however, no harm was caused as Sharma took it in his stride and used the situation for comic relief. In one of the messages, the alleged fraudster urged him to check and report back on the company's available funds.
The impersonator also demanded that he share the number and contact details of the finance head of the company, and went so far as to ask him to forward a suspicious .exe file—disguised as a GST document—to the finance executive.
Notably, the Telecom Department on Wednesday introduced the 'Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI)' that enables enhanced intelligence sharing with banks, UPI service providers and financial institutions, a step it believes would mark a major step towards tackling cyber fraud and financial crime.
According to DoT, this will enhance cyber protection and validation checks in case of mobile numbers flagged with this tool, when digital payment is proposed to be made to such numbers.
FRI allows for swift, targeted, and collaborative action against suspected frauds in both telecom and financial domains, an official release said.
'…Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced sharing of 'Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI)' with stakeholders — an output from a multi-dimensional analytical tool developed as part of the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to empower financial institutions with advance actionable intelligence for cyber fraud prevention," the release added..
It is pertinent to mention that Airtel, earlier this month, launched a fraud detection solution that will identify and block malicious websites across all communication Over-The-Top (OTT) apps and platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, email, and others in real-time.
The service is currently available in Haryana circle, with a nationwide roll-out planned soon.

Trump Slaps Tariffs, India Hits Back: From McDonald, Coca-Cola To iPhones, A Nationalist Boycott Storm Brews

New Delhi: A wave of calls to ditch American brands is sweeping across parts of India. From McDonald's and Coca-Cola to Amazon and Apple, household names from the United States are finding themselves at the centre of a boycott campaign, Reuters reported. The push comes as business leaders and supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi rally against Washington's steep new trade duties. India's vast consumer base has long been fertile ground for U.S. companies. McDonald's outlets are dotted across the country. Coke and Pepsi dominate beverage shelves in both small-town stores and urban supermarkets. Apple store openings attract long queues. Starbucks offers discounted treats to crowds of loyal customers. WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, has more users in India than anywhere else in the world. Domino's runs more outlets here than in any other country. Now, anger is simmering after former U.S. President Donald Trump slapped a 50% tariff on Indian goods. The decision has unsettled exporters and sparked tension between New Delhi and Washington. While there is no clear sign of sales declines, the rhetoric against American imports is getting louder, both online and on the streets. Manish Chowdhary, co-founder of Wow Skin Science, posted a video on LinkedIn urging shoppers to back Indian farmers and startups. He called for 'Made in India' to become a global obsession and cited South Korea's global reputation for food and beauty products. 'We have lined up for products from thousands of miles away. We have proudly spent on brands that we do not own, while our own makers fight for attention in their own country,' he said, as cited by the news agency. Rahm Shastry, CEO of DriveU, a service that provides drivers on call, added his voice on LinkedIn. 'India should have its own home-grown Twitter/Google/YouTube/WhatsApp/FB like China has,' he wrote. Indian companies already challenge foreign brands at home, particularly in retail and food. Still going global has remained an uphill climb. In technology, though, Indian IT firms such as TCS and Infosys serve clients across continents. Speaking in Bengaluru on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi called for greater self-reliance. 'Indian technology companies make products for the world but now is the time for us to give more priority to India's needs,' he said, without naming any firm. Even as boycotts gathered steam, Tesla opened its second showroom in the country on Monday in New Delhi. The launch drew both Indian commerce ministry officials and U.S. embassy representatives. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch staged rallies nationwide on Sunday. The group urged shoppers to switch to Indian alternatives and circulated a WhatsApp list of domestic brands, from soaps to cold drinks. 'People are now looking at Indian products. It will take some time to fructify. This is a call for nationalism and patriotism,' said group's Co-Convenor Ashwani Mahajan. On social media, the group's 'Boycott foreign food chains' graphics display logos of McDonald's and other international restaurants. In Lucknow, 37-year-old Rajat Gupta sat at a McDonald's on Monday, sipping a cup of coffee worth Rs 49. He brushed off the protests. 'Tariffs are a matter of diplomacy and my McPuff, coffee should not be dragged into it,' the report has quoted him as saying.

Poor implementation of PCMC's pay and park facility irks citizens

Pune: Citizens and activists have voiced concern over poor implementation of PCMC's pay and park facility reintroduced earlier this year after its failed launch in 2021. Last month, the civic body also announced the launch of a 'WhatsApp-based booking' option for reserving parking slots at 10 locations across the city. However, the service is yet to become available for citizens. Currently, citizens can make online payment for parking through WhatsApp at only two locations — Nashik Phata and Empire Estate Bridge. Santosh Chavan, a resident of Nigdi, said, "I tried to find a spot for parking near Pimpri Camp Market on Sunday using PCMC's online facility, but the WhatsApp number shared earlier was of no use. It offered no option to reserve a slot or even locate nearby parking spaces. It feels like the announcement was made, but nothing has actually been implemented on the ground. " You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune Another resident, Vinay Kumar from Punawale, said the municipal corporation has failed to promote the facility, due to which many people are still unaware that there is an arrangement for parking vehicles. "People park their vehicles anywhere on the road because they don't know that there are dedicated parking spots," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emergency Generators in Santo Domingo: (Prices May Surprise You) Emergency Generator | Search Ads Search Now Undo Launched in 2021, the pay and park project faced criticism for poor execution and was shut down within two years due to poor public response. To address the flaws, civic officials studied parking models implemented in Bengaluru and Coimbatore and revamped the plan to reintroduce the project again earlier this year. It was decided that the scheme would be implemented in a phased manner to ensure success, with only ten sites selected initially instead of a citywide launch. Activist Maruti Bhapkar criticised the civic body for failing to promote its own scheme or involve citizens before launching it. "There is a clear disconnect between public and civic officials on the issue, which has led to a sharp rise in illegal roadside parking across the city. Even outside PCMC headquarters, there are large number of illegally parked vehicles," he said. Bhapkar further added, "The policy will only succeed when municipal officials take citizens into confidence and work on a long-term solution, instead of experimenting with different models on a trial basis." Bapusaheb Gaikwad, the joint city engineer, said, "It is true that the service has not received a very good response so far, but we are working on awareness initiatives to make it reach more people." He admitted that the WhatsApp booking facility was not yet functional. "The concessionaire has made only three functions available on WhatsApp, and very soon the other functions, like online booking, will also be made available for citizens. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said "Central GST authorities have not issued any notices based on UPI transaction". The minister was replying to a question on whether the government has issued GST notices to small traders and street vendors in the country, including Karnataka, without assessment of their business activities. The notices were sent by State GST field offices.
