John Cleese says he's without a house or a car following multiple divorces
John Cleese has admitted that he is without a house or a car following multiple divorces and recently gave a flat to his current partner to 'make her feel secure'.
The Monty Python star was married to psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger for 16 years before their split in 2008. In their divorce, Eichelberger received a £20m settlement resulting in Cleese travelling the world with 'The Alimony Tour' to earn back some of his net worth.
It was not the first time Cleese turned to the stage to pay his alimony. He previously took his 'A Ludicrous Evening with John Cleese ... or How to Finance Your Divorce' tour to Scandinavia. He said at the time that he was unhappy at being forced to go back to work.
Cleese has now been married four times, having also been wed to Connie Booth between 1968 and 1978, and to Barbra Trentham between 1981 and 1990. The Life of Brian actor married Jennifer Wade, a 53-year-old jewellery designer, in 2012.
Speaking to The Times, Cleese opened up on how the divorces have impacted him financially: 'The third wife got two properties, one was in London and one was in New York, and we had to sell the other three. I've actually given the flat behind Peter Jones to Jennifer, so I don't have a house, I don't have a car,' said the 85-year-old comedian.
Explaining the decision to give the flat in Chelsea to his fourth wife Cleese added: 'I [did it] to make her feel secure. I think the greatest, saddest thing about our world is how many women feel unsafe, that's not a good society.
When asked to explain what he meant, Cleese replied: 'Emotionally, they [women] don't feel very secure. And I think if they have a property, they know that I can't kick her out … it's taken anxiety away from her that I think she wasn't totally aware of.'
This is not the first time that Cleese has shared his situation following his divorce from Eichelberger.
Talking about his third wife in 2024, Cleese told Saga: 'Can you believe when I met her, I had a beautiful house in Holland Park and no mortgage and when I broke up with her, I had a flat in Sloane Square and a full mortgage? How they figured out she was worth $20m, I have no idea.'
In the same interview, Cleese also touched on the decision to give the flat to Wade, noting that it made 'a huge difference' to her, 'but I'm surprisingly poor,' he said.
'I never thought it was necessary to own a great deal. The most important thing is to have enough money to have some really good food, buy clothes twice a year and have nice holidays.'

With ‘Dogma's' re-release, director Kevin Smith's prayers for his cult classic have been answered
For more than a quarter century, director Kevin Smith has tried to resurrect 'Dogma,' his religious satire about two fallen angels looking to get back into heaven. Recently, his prayers for the 1999 comedy were finally answered. On Thursday, the movie got a theatrical re-release across 1,500 AMC Theatres screens in honor of its 25th anniversary. Technically, the milestone was last year. But the second coming of a movie that brought us one of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's best on-screen collaborations and an A-list comedic ensemble — including George Carlin, Chris Rock, Janeane Garofalo and Alan Rickman — not to mention the meme-worthy, winking 'Buddy Christ,' warrants a long-awaited hallelujah. 'It's got a good legacy to it,' Smith said of the film. 'It's become the 'umbrella film' for me. The umbrella film is the movie that no matter what you do, even if you make s— that people don't like, they won't crucify you — pun intended — because you made a movie that they like.' Though the sparkling period of Smith's career is largely defined by 1994's 'Clerks' and 1997's 'Chasing Amy,' his fourth film, 'Dogma,' steeped in irreverence and hilarity centered around his former Catholic faith, is still considered one of his classics. The movie debuted at Cannes in 1999. He returned to the renowned film festival last month, when the comedy played in the Cannes Classics section, just days before sitting down with The Times on camera to discuss 'Dogma's' whirlwind re-release. In the interview, the director, writer and actor recounts how the movie was saved by filmmaker and actor Alessandra Williams, who raised money to buy the film from Miramax earlier this year, decades after it was acquired and shelved by disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein sold Smith's film, along with a trove of others, to Williams to help pay for his legal defense, Smith said. In collaboration with Iconic Events, the film has since been remastered in 4K for its screening tour and is being shown in select AMC theaters. Smith is well-seasoned when it comes to touring his old films, pairing the screenings with Q&As and stand-up performances throughout the live presentations. It took little time for him to book a sold-out, 20-city tour aimed at getting fans fired up to come see 'Dogma' once again under much different (and safer) circumstances. 'Even with getting people aware of the movie this time around, it's not as fraught with peril as it was back in the day,' Smith said, referring to the death threats, protests and 400,000 pieces of hate mail he said the movie garnered from Christian extremists who denounced what they believed to be the film's mockery of their faith. 'You Jews better take that money you stole from us and start investing in flak jackets,' Smith said while closing his eyes and reciting one of the letters from memory. 'We're coming because we're coming in there with shotguns. Signed, Your Brothers in Christ.' Though the controversy of the film has definitely waned, the inspiration behind the film remains steadfast, Smith said. 'To me, it plays like a kid really trying to celebrate his faith after having grown up in a church where every Sunday, everyone seemed to be mourning it. So I think [people hopefully see it] for what it is. It's a love letter to spirituality.'

‘Monty Python And The Holy Grail' To Get 50th Anniversary 4K Blu-Ray Release
Happily someone high up at Sony Pictures has not only remembered that timeless comedy classic Monty Python And The Holy Grail is 50 years old this year, but they've also decided to celebrate this half-century milestone by granting the film a 4K Blu-ray release. And not just any 4K Blu-ray release, either; this one's going to appear as a limited edition steelbook release accompanied by hours of special features – including a brand new 50 Years of Monty Python And The Holy Grail tribute documentary. 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail' celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new 4K Blu-ray release ... More complete with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound. The film will be presented on 4K disc in its 1.66:1 original aspect ratio using a new 4K master bolstered by the Dolby Vision high dynamic range format, breathing new life into Monty Python's unique take on the King Arthur myth and its cast of classic characters. Hopefully the likes of The Black Knight, the Knights Who Say 'Ni', Tim the Enchanter, Brave Sir Robin and, of course, the legendary White Rabbit will have never looked better. It's not just the film's picture quality that's getting a new lick of paint for the 4K Blu-ray release, either. The film will also be presented on the 4K disc with a Dolby Atmos sound mix, to make sure you don't miss a word of The Frenchman's taunting or the Bridgekeeper's cunning riddles. Purists will be pleased to hear, though, that the original English Mono track is going to be provided as an option on the disc too, delivering the same audio experience cinemagoers got when the film was first released back in 1975. The film will be accompanied on the 4K disc by two special features: A slightly shorter 'near-theatrical' version of the film (presented in HD resolution) previously only available on an old VHS release of the film, and the 'Tis But A Tribute – 50 Years Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail' documentary, in which more than 25 comedians share their memories of, affection for and continued fascination with the film. Sydney Sweeney had a fashion marathon in New York City yesterday, stepping out in five different outfits to promote her upcoming psychological thriller Echo Valley. Stylist Molly Dickson put together the looks, which included a show-stopping ball gown and chic blazer minidress. Sweeney started the day in a nautical-inspired look by Coperni. She wore a black vest with a structured sailor-style collar over a pleated white skirt. Black knee-high boots, a leather handbag, and oversize sunglasses completed the ensemble as she departed her hotel en route to Good Morning America. The bright-red silk design featured a sculpted neckline and peplum waist, adding dramatic volume to the flared skirt. She completed the look with diamond studs from Kwiat. Later that night, the actress made another outfit change, stepping out in an off-the-shoulder red cocktail dress with ruched detailing and a high slit, paired with matching pumps. Outside of her acting work, Sweeney recently confirmed her split from former fiancé Jonathan Davino and spoke candidly about embracing single life. 'I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it,' she told The Times.
