Elegance of the Edwardians on display at Buckingham Palace

Malay Mail21-04-2025

LONDON, April 21 — A rare exhibition is exploring the glamorous lives and fashions of two royal couples who reigned over Britain during the Edwardian period as the country tipped ever closer to World War I.
The Edwardians: Age of Elegance, at the King's Gallery in Buckingham Palace, brings together more than 300 works from the Royal Collection that will be on display until November 23.
The centrepiece is the coronation gown Queen Alexandra wore on August 9, 1902, made of silk embroidered with thousands of gold sequins and designed by the French house Morin Blossier.
Alexandra, daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and sister of King George I of Greece, married Edward, then Prince of Wales, on March 10, 1863, in the chapel of Windsor Castle.
She was 18 years old. He was 22.
Alexandra was to remain the princess of Wales for almost 40 years until Edward succeeded to the throne on the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, in 1901.
Under Edward VII began the Edwardian period.
The royal couple ushered in a new generation after the austere last years of Victoria's long reign, when she largely withdrew from public life, mourning the death of her beloved husband, Albert.
'Pure drama'
For her coronation as the new queen, Alexandra decided against wearing the traditional white or cream robes, which had an ecclesiastical feel.
'She wanted that moment to be a moment of pure drama,' said curator Kathryn Jones.
Realising that electric light was to be 'used for the first time in Westminster Abbey ... she chooses a gold fabric so that she shimmers with thousands of tiny spangles', Jones told AFP.
The dress is fragile and has not been on public display for some 30 years.
Conservators have spent more than 100 hours preparing it for the exhibition.
'It's a powerful example of Edward and Alexandra's attempts to balance tradition and modernity as they stood on the cusp of the 20th century—a shining moment of glamour before the world was at war,' Jones says on the exhibition's website.
Edward's gold coronation mantle is also on display, along with two thrones commissioned for the event.
Photography was still in its infancy but it allowed thousands of pictures of the new queen to be seen around the world, turning her into fashion icon and symbol of elegance of the times.
Alexandra was a keen amateur photographer herself and some of her snapshots taken with a portable Kodak camera are on display.
Two massive portraits of the couple greet visitors arriving at the King's Gallery.
One room depicts their lavish lifestyle through paintings of opulent receptions, concerts, regattas on the Isle of Wight, lavish costume balls, garden parties and their residences at Marlborough House in London and Sandringham in Norfolk.
As collectors, they amassed textiles, artworks, tableware, paintings, furniture, sculptures, plants, and rare books.
There is a copy of Oscar Wilde's Poems with a rare handwritten note by the author.
Edward also discovered a passion for Faberge and ordered several miniature figures of his favourite animals.
Visitors can admire paintings and water colours by such artists as Frederic Leighton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John Singer Sargent, as well as bronze sculptures by Alfred Gilbert.
Several rooms are dedicated to the royal couple's travels across five continents.
The exhibition also includes works collected by Alexandra and Edward's son, who became George V and was crowned in June 1911, with his wife Mary.
By then, times were changing, and instability and political turmoil roiled Europe and the British Empire.

Can't get your hands on a Birkin? Here's your chance to own THE original Birkin

It's nearly impossible to walk inside an Hermes store and come home with a new Birkin bag. But if you wanted to get your hands on the original Birkin bag – the prototype made for actress Jane Birkin – it is going up for auction. It will be sold as part of a Paris Fashion Icons sale, which Sotheby's is holding July 10. The bag will be on view at Sotheby's in Manhattan through Tuesday and then transported – representatives would not say how, citing security concerns – to Sotheby's Galleries in Paris, where it will be on view from July 3-9. There is no public estimate for how much the bag might fetch. 'At this stage we will communicate it privately to potential bidders,' said Morgane Halimi, the global head of handbags and fashion for Sotheby's. 'Obviously it is a one-of-a-kind piece, completely apart from any other handbag, or any other Birkin. We are breaking records with Birkin bags on a regular basis at auction. "We foresee it to be as unique as the Diana jumper or a worn jersey from the NBA. It has value because of what it is and what has happened because of that bag.' This is the original bag made in 1984 for Jane, who was an icon of French cinema. The story behind the bag has become something of a fashion legend. Jane was on an Air France flight to London from Paris and had been upgraded to first class. The basket bag she carried, her signature for decades, was in poor shape. As she boarded the plane, the contents started to spill out: wallet, keys, business cards, diapers, cigarettes, glasses. Read more: Birkin handbag maker faces class-action lawsuit in the US over 'refusal' to sell Her seatmate happened to be Jean-Louis Dumas, then the CEO of Hermes, the luxury house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermes. Jane and Dumas talked about how she needed a bag that could fit all of her necessities and they began to sketch out an idea on an airsickness bag. Their concept had two handles like a tote, and somewhat resembled a shrunken version of the Haut A Courroies luggage that Hermes made. Her custom bag became the prototype of the Birkin, which was named after her. The bag became desirable partly for its rarity. 'There are a limited number of them created each year,' Halimi said. 'There is the craftsmanship: you can repair it and restore it and cherish it. And then in a world of fast fashion and seasonal trends, it's not going to be out of style anytime soon. If you are offered one to buy at Hermes, you feel like part of this small club.' The Birkin has become a fixture in pop culture since its inception, name checked in many song lyrics and appearing as a plotline on a 2001 episode of Sex And The City that included the memorable line: 'It's not a bag, it's a Birkin!' This original bag is different in several ways from the commercially available Birkins. Its size is unique, with a height of just under 14 inches and a depth of just under 16 inches; its strap is not removable; the hardware is made of brass; the inner zipper is from a different manufacturer; the studs on the bottom are a different shape. And one more detail: a nail clipper that Jane had hung on the outside of the bag is included. She was known for not being precious with her Birkins. She covered some in stickers for political causes and frequently hung trinkets off them. A 2022 file picture shows Catherine Benier at her boutique in Paris. The Birkin prototype was purchased at auction by Benier in 2000. She decided to sell it after seeing how many people came to visit it. Photo: The New York Times On social media, fans have taken to posting their own charm-laden bags or phones, which some call 'Birkinifying'. Over the past year, imitations – or homages – to the bag have gotten notice online, including the Boatkin. The original Birkin, though, has remained a subject of intense fascination. It was exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art as part of the show Items: Is Fashion Modern? that ran from 2017 to 2018, and again in 2020 at London's Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the exhibition Bags Inside Out . Sotheby's displayed it in the company's Paris galleries in October 2024, and at Sotheby's Maison, Hong Kong in April 2025. Thousands of people came to see the bag at the Sotheby's showings, Halimi said. Jane, who died in July 2023, owned five Birkin bags over the course of her life, one of which sold for around US$160,000 (approximately RM677,000) in a 2021 auction. This prototype, which has the added value of being the original, was sold by Jane at a charity auction for Aids in October 1994. It went to auction again in May 2000, at Poulain-Le Fur, and was purchased by Catherine Benier, a prominent collector and the owner of the Les 3 Marches de Catherine B vintage shop in Paris, for an undisclosed price. Read more: Like the famous bag named after her, Jane Birkin is a style icon 'Acquiring the first Birkin from Hermes was a dream of mine as a collector,' Benier wrote in an email. She said she had read about the 1994 auction but didn't participate, and was determined to win the 2000 auction when she heard about it in advance. 'I got the bag after fierce bidding between myself and other foreign bidders… It's the jewel in my collection.' Benier kept the bag stored, but the crowds who visited it last fall influenced her decision to sell. 'A collection is only worth it if it's shared,' she wrote. She expects the bag to set records, but would not specify a desired number. 'Twenty-five years ago when I acquired it, it was already the most expensive bag in the world,' she wrote. 'All these elements fuel the legend of the first Birkin bag, so certainly a price exists, but what is it? This bag is the object of a lifetime, it's a legend, an icon. Does a legend have a price? Certainly.' – ©2025 The New York Times Company This article originally appeared in The New York Times.

Deschamps counting on PSG players and backing Dembele for Ballon d'Or

STUTTGART: Didier Deschamps expects the Paris St Germain players to be ready after their Champions League success when France take on Spain in the Nations League semi-finals, with the manager also backing Ousmane Dembele for the Ballon d'Or. PSG secured their first Champions League trophy with Saturday's 5-0 hammering of Inter Milan, with France's Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Lucas Hernandez and Dembele all involved for the winners. Marcus Thuram and Benjamin Pavard also played for the losing side, and there has been little time to recover before today's game in Stuttgart. "They are here, so I am counting on them," Deschamps told reporters. "I found them very happy on Monday evening, of course, with a certain fatigue as well. Then, there were Benjamin and Marcus on the other side. The feelings and emotions were not the same. "Ideally, when there is a peak like that, of course, you always have to come back down, but now, we need to quickly get back up because the match is close." Dembele was named Champions League player of the season, and much of the talk since Saturday's final has been about the Ballon d'Or award, with many seeing the PSG forward as the main rival to Spain and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. "Of course I am for Ousmane, since he is French and with the season he is celebrating," Deschamps said. "Obviously, this Nations League can bring some elements of response, the Club World Cup too. If I have to choose, I tell you Ous, one hundred per cent, of course. "If you ask me about the Spaniards, I don't think they will tell you the same thing. But obviously, Ousmane, with the season he is having, deserves it." While Kylian Mbappe left PSG for Real Madrid at the end of last season without winning the Champions League, and ended this season without a league title in Spain, he was the top scorer in La Liga and remains an important part of Deschamps' plans. "You know his season as well as I do. He is now in very good shape and with a much better footballing and physical potential," Deschamps said. "Nothing changes, Kylian will have a central position." Germany and Portugal meet in the other semi-final on Wednesday in Munich, and the final on Sunday will also take place at the Allianz Arena, the scene of PSG's Champions League triumph. - REUTERS
