Specializing in checkout-free payment systems, Metropolis Technologies has rapidly emerged as a significant player in AI-driven urban infrastructure. With over 4,000 locations, the company is the largest parking network in North America. It services more than 50 million customers a year, adding 20,000 members daily and processing over $5 billion worth of payments, according to the company. Leveraging computer vision and machine learning, Metropolis has modernized parking infrastructure, automating vehicle recognition and payment processes, and eliminating traditional barriers like tickets and payment kiosks.
Its business has grown rapidly in part through acquisitions. It completed a $1.5 billion acquisition of 100-year-old SP Plus Corporation in May 2024, North America's largest parking network operator. The deal involved Metropolis closing $1.8 billion in Series C financing, making it the largest venture-backed M&A deal last year.
In January, it made an acquisition on the tech side of its business model, buying Oosto, formerly known as AnyVision, for $125 million. Oosto specializes in facial recognition and threat detection technologies, serving sectors like retail, health care, and gaming, an acquisition aimed to enhance Metropolis's AI capabilities beyond parking solutions.
"Oosto has built an unparalleled reputation for delivering AI that performs seamlessly in the real world," Metropolis co-founder and CEO Alex Israel said in a release. "During customer visits, we were deeply impressed by Oosto's ability to execute flawlessly, even in the most complex environments — whether it's a bustling transit hub, a high-security venue, or a casino floor."
Metropolis opened an office in Nashville in November 2024 due to the potential for growth in the local tech sector, making it a co-headquarters with Los Angeles. Co-founder Travis Kell was appointed CFO in October 2024 as well.
Despite the successes, Metropolis' technology isn't perfect. At San Antonio International Airport – the company's flagship airport location – veterans entitled to free parking claim they were incorrectly charged by its ticketless payment system, which uses AI to recognize license plates. The company issued refunds but faced criticism for customer service slipups, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
The company is working through the issues while adding new features. A feature called Passes was introduced in October 2024 to give customers unlimited drive-in, drive-out access to garages for a set time. In the future, its technology could be applied to drive-throughs, gas stations, car washes and other car-related services.

Singapore's Big-Rig Battery Station Is a Test Case For Crowded Cities

Singapore's first charging and swapping station for big rigs can replace batteries in under five minutes, simultaneously solving two big hurdles for the city's electrification ambitions — space limitations and grid strain — and serving as a test case for other high-density metropolises around the world. The 1,550-square-foot station takes up one-sixteenth of the space needed to charge 30 heavy trucks through the traditional plug-in method. It uses much less electricity — just 1,600 amps, compared with the 6,000 amps of power required to fast-charge 30 vehicles, according to EcoSwift, the company behind the project.

Figma more than triples in NYSE debut after selling shares at $33

Figma's stock more than tripled in its New York Stock Exchange debut on Thursday, a day after the design software company sold shares at $33 in its IPO. The big opening pop is the latest indication that the tech IPO market has reopened following a multi-year lull that began in early 2022, when inflation was soaring and interest rates were on the rise. So far this year, online bank Chime, stablecoin issuer Circle and artificial intelligence infrastructure provider CoreWeave have hit the market, along with health-tech companies Hinge Health and Omada Health. Figma's first trade at $85 valued the company at about $50 billion. The stock, trading under ticker symbol FIG, was halted after it soared past $112. In 2022 Adobe agreed to acquire Figma for $20 billion, but the deal fell apart in 2023 after U.K. regulators said the tie-up would likely harm competiiton. Led by 33-year-old CEO Dylan Field, Figma makes web-based software that allows people to collaborate on slide decks, digital whiteboards and designs for apps and websites. Field told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday that regardless of what happens with the market debut, the company has to "stay focused, stay on mission, listen to our customers and really keep our priorities in mind." "The most important thing to remind myself of, the team of, is share price is a moment in time," said Field, whose stake in the company is worth over $4.5 billion based on the opening price. "We're going to see all sorts of behavior probably today, over the weeks ahead." Figma boasts more than 13 million monthly users, two-thirds of whom are not designers. As of March 31, more than 1,000 clients were paying Figma over $100,000 annually, according to the prospectus. Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Uber are all customers. In its filing of preliminary results for the second quarter, Figma said it generated $9 million to $12 million in operating income on $247 million to $250 million in revenue, with sales growing about 40% year over year. Last week Figma said in a filing that it would price shares at $25 to $28 each. On Monday it issued another update, calling for a range between $30 and $32, before ultimately pricing $1 above that range. The offering raised $1.2 billion, with most of the proceeds going to existing shareholders, including venture capital firms Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital. Founded in 2012 and based in San Francisco, Figma ranked 45th on CNBC's 2025 Disruptor 50 list of private companies. Lynn Martin, president of the NYSE, told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on Thursday that plenty more deals should be on the way. "I think given that Figma did so well with their pricing last night, and there is so much demand that has persisted still in the order book this morning for this company, I think this will open the floodgates," Martin said.

Spingence partners with Cooler Master to advance AI in manufacturing

Spingence Technology and Cooler Master have joined forces to accelerate advancements in AI-driven manufacturing solutions. Spingence is engaged in providing AI solutions for precision manufacturing, while Cooler Master specialises in thermal solutions. Both companies are based in Taiwan. This collaboration aligns with Cooler Master's "CM AI Dual-Engine Initiative," which focuses on enhancing intelligent manufacturing processes and operational transformation by utilising Nvidia AI technologies. According to Spingence, the collaboration seeks to implement solutions across quality inspection, digital simulation, and agentic AI deployment at the enterprise level. The initiative aims to enhance both quality and operational efficiency. As the primary technical partner for Cooler Master's initial AI Factory phase, Spingence has deployed the Nvidia Metropolis platform. This involves integrating Nvidia TAO and AutoML capabilities to rapidly develop and refine high-precision AOI defect detection models. These models are operational on production lines through Nvidia Dynamo-Triton, allowing automated inspection of 20,000 to 40,000 products monthly. Products such as Nvidia GB200, GB300, and Hopper benefit from improved defect detection rates and consistency at final inspection stages, said Spingence. Spingence is also supporting Cooler Master's smart manufacturing roadmap by launching a digital twin modelling initiative using Nvidia Omniverse libraries. This facilitates highly realistic equipment model development, enabling virtual simulations of workstations and production workflows. The approach reduces deployment risks and lays the foundation for future agentic AI model integrations, said Spingence. Responding to Cooler Master's focus on intelligent operations, Spingence is leveraging its experience in on-premises AI deployments to integrate Nvidia Enterprise AI Factory's validated design with Nvidia NIM microservices. This infrastructure allows for rapid modular deployment across various applications, including knowledge summarisation, report generation, and task recommendations. In November 2024, Spingence unveiled a new Edge AI division to address the growing need for real-time data analysis within enterprises. The company introduced two key products, Edgestar and Visionstar, to enhance decision-making across industries. Edgestar provides a large language model platform tailored for enterprise needs, overcoming memory constraints during large-scale training. Visionstar delivers real-time visual recognition and anomaly detection by integrating visual language models into existing surveillance frameworks.
