The Voice of OFWs: DJ Meow, from airwaves icon to community leader

Qatar Tribune18-05-2025
Darlene Regis
He has an energy-infused, masculine DJ voice you've likely heard before — a familiar and warm presence on the airwaves that has become instantly recognizable across Qatar's Filipino community. You can catch him on Pinoy Heart Radio (PHR), spot him at media conferences, and see him in action during outreach programs and community events. He is a household name in the Filipino diaspora, popularly known as 'DJ Meow' — but behind the mic is Romeo Esmeria Villegas Jr., a man driven by passion, purpose, and people-first advocacy.
DJ Meow has been a cornerstone of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Qatar for over 16 years. As the PHR Founding Chairman, his passion for broadcasting and commitment to community service, creates a platform that resonates with the modern heroes in the Middle East and around the world.
Why 'DJ Meow'?
Where does the moniker come from? 'It's simple,' he laughs. 'It's from my name — RoMeo. I added a 'W' and it became DJ Meow. It's quirky, catchy, and easy to remember!'
From Tambo Pamplona to Qatar's Airwaves
Born in Manila, grew up in Bicol, and lived in Tambo Pamplona, Camarines Sur, DJ Meow's journey is a testament to humble beginnings and unwavering determination. 'I am the youngest in a brood of four,' he shares. 'Despite our financial challenges, I worked while studying to support my education, juggling jobs and studies that opened doors to opportunities abroad.'
His perseverance paid off, leading him to Qatar, where he initially worked for an MEP company for eight years. 'The transition wasn't easy,' he admits. 'The cultural differences and strict work environment were challenging. But I endured, learned, and grew.'
OFW by Day, DJ by Night
While many recognize DJ Meow as the voice behind PHR's broadcasts, his primary profession is as a Document Controller and trainer.
'Managing records and ensuring document accuracy is my day job,' he explains. 'Being a DJ is my passion and a way to serve the Filipino community.'
'In 2013, we organized our very first Typhoon Relief Operation in Laguna for over 200 households, and as of now, we have completed 44 outreach programs — both here in Doha and in the Philippines,' he says.
'It started over 12 years ago as a small platform for Filipino voices and has now grown into a vital community hub,' he adds.
Service with Recognition
DJ Meow's contributions have not gone unnoticed. He's received multiple recognitions, including the Outstanding Leadership Award, Trainer of the Year, Plaque of Inspiring Change Award and Honors from the Philippine Embassy in Qatar, UFOQ, and AFJQ. 'These recognitions motivate me to continue serving our kababayans,' he says.
Under his leadership, PHR was nominated for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas under the Office of the President of the Philippines.
Exclusive Interview with Qatar Tribune
What inspired you to start Pinoy Heart Radio?
I wanted to create a platform where Filipinos could feel at home, share their stories, and support each other. PHR was born out of that desire.
How do you balance both careers?
It's all about passion and purpose. I work all day and serve the community at night.
What are some memorable events you've led?
Feeding programs, free medical missions, concerts like Parokya ni Edgar and Gloc 9, and outreach during Philippine Independence Day.
What's your favorite moment on air?
When listeners send messages saying our shows uplift them or our charities helped their families. That's the real reward.
What message do you have for fellow Filipinos in Qatar?
Never give up. Help others even when you know they can't help you back. That's true service.
Looking Ahead
As DJ Meow continues to juggle his roles, he remains committed to his mission. 'I'm just happy with what I'm doing right now,' he says. 'If I can make someone's day better through music or kindness, then I've done my part.'
His legacy? 'Just to be remembered as a simple, friendly person who used his voice and heart to uplift others,' he concludes.
Whether through airwaves, events, or acts of service, Romeo Villegas Jr. – DJ Meow – has built more than just a name. He's built a bridge between hearts in Qatar and the Philippines, one broadcast at a time.

From contenders to crowd favorites: Meet MYK – Qatar's rising OPM trio

Darlene Regis They came. They sang. They conquered hearts. The Filipino music scene in Qatar is bursting with homegrown talent, and at the center of it all is MYK – a powerhouse vocal trio, setting Filipino community events ablaze with soulful performances and charismatic charm. Whether a heartfelt ballad or an electrifying OPM hit, this all-Filipino group delivers performances that captivate the crowd. Comprised of Marlon Mercado, Yousef 'Yoe' Domingo Adil, and Kelvin 'Kebong' Sarmiento, MYK is fast becoming a household name among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Qatar. Get to Know the Men Behind the Mic In an exclusive interview with Qatar Tribune, MYK opened up about their humble beginnings, the spark that brought them together, and the dreams that continue to fuel their journey. From personal stories to backstage wins, the interview sheds light on what drives their passion for music. Born from Competition, Fueled by Chemistry Before they became a trio, Marlon, Yousef, and Kelvin were competitors in a 2023 singing contest in Qatar. But instead of rivalry, what emerged was a rare blend of musical synergy and onstage magic. 'People saw a natural chemistry between us when we were invited to co-host the next season,' they shared. 'That's when MYK was born!' The group reflected on their individual journeys: 'We took different paths to get to Qatar, but we were all driven by the same goal – to seek better job opportunities abroad. As they say, the grass is greener overseas, and Qatar offers a promising environment for personal and professional growth.' 'Each of us brings a unique vocal texture and style to the group, and while we're currently focused on vocals, we complement each other well on stage,' they shared. Marlon, from Batangas, is dubbed the RNB and Balladeer Prince of Doha and also works as a gym instructor. He often performs his own renditions, such as 'Babalik Ka Rin' and 'Please Don't Ask Me' alongside Maestro Dexter Tumang. Kelvin, from Pampanga, is the group's charming spirit, known for his spontaneous humor and strong vocal leads. His humorous moments, often captured in viral reels, give fans a good laugh. Yousef, from Misamis Occidental, balances his career as a jewelry advisor by day and a music artist by night. In 2022, he joined the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in California, USA, representing Qatar and gaining international recognition. He later won the first season of Qatar's Royal Clash competition. The Big Break On July 11, 2025, MYK made their biggest splash yet – opening the 'Sarili Nating Mundo' concert for Filipino icons KZ Tandingan and TJ Monterde at the Qatar National Convention Centre. Their 30-minute pre-show set didn't just warm up the crowd – it ignited it. Their performance was a highlight of the night as they delivered OPM with a punch of soul, sincerity, and stage presence as seasoned pros. From their cover of Beyoncé's 'Listen' to original Filipino love songs, MYK delivered powerhouse vocals, emotional depth, and undeniable chemistry. 'It was our first major performance as MYK and being given that platform meant a lot to us. Despite the jitters, everything clicked once we hit the stage. The audience's applause made all the hard work and rehearsals worth it,' the group recalled. From Covers to Originals Starting with cover songs – from OPM classics to international hits – MYK has carved a musical niche rooted in emotional storytelling and community connection. 'We naturally gravitated toward genres like pop and ballad, which we all love,' they shared. But now, the trio is stepping into uncharted territory with original music. 'As OFWs, we draw inspiration from shared experiences – stories of hope, dreams, friendship, and even heartbreak. We aim for our music to connect emotionally, especially with those living and working far from home. Influences and Inspirations When asked who inspires them, they all answered in unison: Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. 'It was a huge honor to front act for her 2023 Qatar concert–a surreal moment that motivated us to grow as performers,' the group recalls. 'Her vocal mastery left a lasting impact on us.' MYK cites performances at Philippine Independence Day and other cultural events as career-defining highlights. The group also serves as the resident trio of Sinag Digital Media Studio – a community talent platform they've had the privilege of hosting. 'One of our most memorable milestones was hosting Sinag Sessions, which featured Filipino artists in Doha – from vocalists to instrumentalists and bands,' the group shared. 'It validated not just our music but our ability to connect and inspire. Working with talented artists who share our passion motivates us to keep growing,' they added. What's Next? The trio is dreaming big: A full album, more original songs, and a potential tour back home in the Philippines. 'We're currently working on our first original single, and we're excited to share that it will be released soon on major music platforms,' they revealed. The group is also looking forward to releasing more original tracks on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, among others. 'We're working hard behind the scenes, and we can't wait to bring our music to more people,' they said. 'We hope to inspire others to keep dreaming.' The group is also open to collaborations and excited to share the stage with other artists in the OPM diaspora – locally and internationally. Proudly Pinoy, Loudly Local MYK proudly represents Filipino talent in Qatar. Their mission? To inspire fellow Pinoys to follow their dreams and take part in enriching the vibrant Filipino cultural tapestry in Qatar. 'To all aspiring artists: It's never too late to pursue your passion. Keep showing up, keep believing in yourself, and don't be afraid to take that first step. Your passion has the power to inspire not only yourself but also the community around you. We're cheering for you!' From competitors to collaborators, from community gigs to concerts – MYK isn't just a group of singers. They're a movement. A powerful reminder that talent knows no borders, and passion doesn't need permission. Photo Credits: Elmer Diaz and Joel Garcia
