From contenders to crowd favorites: Meet MYK – Qatar's rising OPM trio

Darlene Regis They came. They sang. They conquered hearts. The Filipino music scene in Qatar is bursting with homegrown talent, and at the center of it all is MYK – a powerhouse vocal trio, setting Filipino community events ablaze with soulful performances and charismatic charm. Whether a heartfelt ballad or an electrifying OPM hit, this all-Filipino group delivers performances that captivate the crowd. Comprised of Marlon Mercado, Yousef 'Yoe' Domingo Adil, and Kelvin 'Kebong' Sarmiento, MYK is fast becoming a household name among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Qatar. Get to Know the Men Behind the Mic In an exclusive interview with Qatar Tribune, MYK opened up about their humble beginnings, the spark that brought them together, and the dreams that continue to fuel their journey. From personal stories to backstage wins, the interview sheds light on what drives their passion for music. Born from Competition, Fueled by Chemistry Before they became a trio, Marlon, Yousef, and Kelvin were competitors in a 2023 singing contest in Qatar. But instead of rivalry, what emerged was a rare blend of musical synergy and onstage magic. 'People saw a natural chemistry between us when we were invited to co-host the next season,' they shared. 'That's when MYK was born!' The group reflected on their individual journeys: 'We took different paths to get to Qatar, but we were all driven by the same goal – to seek better job opportunities abroad. As they say, the grass is greener overseas, and Qatar offers a promising environment for personal and professional growth.' 'Each of us brings a unique vocal texture and style to the group, and while we're currently focused on vocals, we complement each other well on stage,' they shared. Marlon, from Batangas, is dubbed the RNB and Balladeer Prince of Doha and also works as a gym instructor. He often performs his own renditions, such as 'Babalik Ka Rin' and 'Please Don't Ask Me' alongside Maestro Dexter Tumang. Kelvin, from Pampanga, is the group's charming spirit, known for his spontaneous humor and strong vocal leads. His humorous moments, often captured in viral reels, give fans a good laugh. Yousef, from Misamis Occidental, balances his career as a jewelry advisor by day and a music artist by night. In 2022, he joined the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in California, USA, representing Qatar and gaining international recognition. He later won the first season of Qatar's Royal Clash competition. The Big Break On July 11, 2025, MYK made their biggest splash yet – opening the 'Sarili Nating Mundo' concert for Filipino icons KZ Tandingan and TJ Monterde at the Qatar National Convention Centre. Their 30-minute pre-show set didn't just warm up the crowd – it ignited it. Their performance was a highlight of the night as they delivered OPM with a punch of soul, sincerity, and stage presence as seasoned pros. From their cover of Beyoncé's 'Listen' to original Filipino love songs, MYK delivered powerhouse vocals, emotional depth, and undeniable chemistry. 'It was our first major performance as MYK and being given that platform meant a lot to us. Despite the jitters, everything clicked once we hit the stage. The audience's applause made all the hard work and rehearsals worth it,' the group recalled. From Covers to Originals Starting with cover songs – from OPM classics to international hits – MYK has carved a musical niche rooted in emotional storytelling and community connection. 'We naturally gravitated toward genres like pop and ballad, which we all love,' they shared. But now, the trio is stepping into uncharted territory with original music. 'As OFWs, we draw inspiration from shared experiences – stories of hope, dreams, friendship, and even heartbreak. We aim for our music to connect emotionally, especially with those living and working far from home. Influences and Inspirations When asked who inspires them, they all answered in unison: Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. 'It was a huge honor to front act for her 2023 Qatar concert–a surreal moment that motivated us to grow as performers,' the group recalls. 'Her vocal mastery left a lasting impact on us.' MYK cites performances at Philippine Independence Day and other cultural events as career-defining highlights. The group also serves as the resident trio of Sinag Digital Media Studio – a community talent platform they've had the privilege of hosting. 'One of our most memorable milestones was hosting Sinag Sessions, which featured Filipino artists in Doha – from vocalists to instrumentalists and bands,' the group shared. 'It validated not just our music but our ability to connect and inspire. Working with talented artists who share our passion motivates us to keep growing,' they added. What's Next? The trio is dreaming big: A full album, more original songs, and a potential tour back home in the Philippines. 'We're currently working on our first original single, and we're excited to share that it will be released soon on major music platforms,' they revealed. The group is also looking forward to releasing more original tracks on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, among others. 'We're working hard behind the scenes, and we can't wait to bring our music to more people,' they said. 'We hope to inspire others to keep dreaming.' The group is also open to collaborations and excited to share the stage with other artists in the OPM diaspora – locally and internationally. Proudly Pinoy, Loudly Local MYK proudly represents Filipino talent in Qatar. Their mission? To inspire fellow Pinoys to follow their dreams and take part in enriching the vibrant Filipino cultural tapestry in Qatar. 'To all aspiring artists: It's never too late to pursue your passion. Keep showing up, keep believing in yourself, and don't be afraid to take that first step. Your passion has the power to inspire not only yourself but also the community around you. We're cheering for you!' From competitors to collaborators, from community gigs to concerts – MYK isn't just a group of singers. They're a movement. A powerful reminder that talent knows no borders, and passion doesn't need permission. Photo Credits: Elmer Diaz and Joel Garcia

OPM royalty reigns supreme in Doha

Darlene Regis Filipino music icons TJ Monterde and KZ Tandingan brought love, soul, and unforgettable music to the stage of the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) on July 11, 2025, for their much-anticipated concert, Sarili Nating Mundo (SNM) international tour. The event was produced by Al Marabe Events in partnership with Cornerstone Entertainment, with direction by actor-director John Prats. For a few hours, the Filipino community in Qatar was transported back home, thanks to this power duo who wear their hearts on their sleeves and sing with soul through their Original Pilipino Music (OPM). KZ was excited to finally perform in Qatar alongside her husband after earlier postponements. OPM Power Couple TJ Monterde, the 'King of Hugot,' and KZ Tandingan, 'Asia's Soul Supreme,' captivated a packed audience with their signature blend of heartfelt ballads and genre-defying vocals. The married couple shared the stage for both solo and duet performances, with songs reflecting their love story and musical chemistry. Their duet, especially their viral hit 'Palagi,' drew thunderous applause. As they poured their hearts into the song, another Filipino couple stole the spotlight when a man dropped to one knee and proposed to his partner, turning the performance into a celebration of love on and offstage. KZ catapulted to fame after winning The X Factor Philippines and made history with sold-out shows abroad, while TJ has carved out a niche as a renowned singer-songwriter. Qatar's Filipino Talent in Spotlight As the event's media partner, Sinag Digital Media said, 'It was truly a celebration of Filipino talent and community spirit.' The agency hosted the Online Press Conference at its studios and organised the pre-show segment. The official event hosts, Tasha Betita and Raymond Carasig of Sinag, kept the momentum going onstage, while Felipe Davila Catinoy reported on the long queue of excited fans awaiting entry. Additionally, Sinag's resident trio MYK — Marlon Mercado, YOE Adil, and Kebong Sarmiento—delivered a high-energy 30-minute singing performance as the concert's opening act. This collaboration reflects Sinag's belief: 'We shine brighter together,' as they look forward to more partnerships that celebrate creativity, unity, and cultural pride. Community Event Held at QNCC's Conference Hall, the venue accommodated thousands of fans with high-quality acoustics and elevated seating for an immersive experience. Not only Filipino fans stormed QNCC for the concert, but several expatriates were also spotted. Record-Breaking Concert Qatar concert Media Head Christian Joy 'Ceejay' Dulalia Rombano said the SNM Qatar leg was the first Filipino concert there to synchronize wristbands with the show, creating a visually captivating experience. Ceejay added it was the first event with a dedicated musical and lights director, led by John Prats, enhancing production quality. Notably, the concert featured the first-ever marriage proposal during a Filipino show in Qatar. It also stood out for its emotional storytelling, making it an unforgettable night for all. Show Highlights The night was filled with emotional highs. TJ serenaded fans with his 'Harana' cover and Bisaya song 'Kung Siya Man,' while KZ wowed with genre-bending renditions of classics, including a powerful solo of Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep.' Qatar Leg TJ and KZ arrived in Qatar on July 6, joined by director John Prats and his wife, actress Isabel Oli-Prats. Afterwards, they attended a press meet-and-greet and toured around Qatar. Off-stage, both couples were spotted enjoying some of Qatar's scenic spots, spending quality time together and having memorable date moments in the country's beautiful spots. Ahead of the performance at QNCC, they paid a courtesy visit to the Philippine Embassy in Doha. They were warmly received by Philippine Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Mardomel Melicor, who expressed gratitude for their contribution in promoting Filipino culture and OPM to both Filipino and non-Filipino communities in Qatar. Global Tour, Local Impact The Qatar leg was part of a world tour that included stops in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Singapore, and the UAE. But this particular show held a special place for the artists and their Filipino fans in the Middle East. 'Sarili Nating Mundo' The tour title, Sarili Nating Mundo (Our Own World), was inspired by a deeply personal song TJ wrote about his early married life with KZ. That song sparked sold-out stadium runs in Manila, including three consecutive nights at Araneta Coliseum, a first for a male Filipino solo artist. An Artist's Take When interviewed by Qatar Tribune, Michael Conjusta shared his thoughts on the TJ Monterde concert. Speaking as an artist, he gave a positive review from his VIP Gold seat. 'Though a bit far, I truly enjoyed it,' he said. 'The view made me feel like I had the whole venue captured.' He praised the venue's international standards, ample parking, and easy public transport access. The show started on time with impressive production. 'The audience loved it, and our front act, MYK Group, was awesome!' TJ and KZ delivered an unforgettable show. 'The production was almost perfect, setting a high standard for future concerts.' A Night to Remember As fans exited QNCC under the warm lights of Doha, many echoed the same sentiment: sulit ang ticket (the ticket was worth it). The SNM Qatar show was more than just a concert—it was a cultural celebration and a tribute to love, music, and the enduring spirit of Filipinos in Qatar and worldwide.
