Police to interview The Crown actor Khalid Abdalla over Gaza protest

The Guardian04-03-2025

The Crown actor Khalid Abdalla has said he has been summoned to attend a 'formal interview' by the Metropolitan police in connection with a pro-Palestine protest.
Abdalla, who played Dodi Fayed in the Netflix series based on the royal family, said on social media he had received the letter in relation to a Palestine Solidarity Campaign protest on 18 January.
'It remains to be seen if this will result in charges,' he wrote on Instagram.
Abdalla, who has also starred in films including United 93, The Kite Runner and The Day of the Jackal, said: 'The right to protest is under attack in this country and it requires us all to defend it.
'While there is an alarming rise in attempts to censor voices that stand up for Palestine, even as it faces open calls for ethnic cleansing, it will not work.'

The Palestine Coalition said it 'condemns' the Met's decision to issue letters to a range of activists.
The group claimed the police alleged in the letters that the recipients had 'breached conditions imposed by the police to limit the right to protest' against the conflict in Gaza.
The protest's chief steward, Chris Nineham, and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign director, Ben Jamal, have already been charged with offences arising from the same protest, along with others. The MPs Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell had also been interviewed under caution by the police, the group said.
Dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrators were arrested in central London on 18 January on suspicion of breaching protest conditions. One of the conditions prevented those participating from entering a specific area around Portland Place.
Thousands of people had gathered to protest against Israel's actions in the 15-month conflict in Gaza, a day after a ceasefire deal was agreed with Hamas.
The Guardian previously reported that Abdalla had addressed the rally. He told the crowd: 'Tomorrow phase one of the ceasefire begins. It remains to be seen if the ceasefire will hold or if the blood shed since it was announced augurs what it will become.
'But still we will have cause to celebrate whatever its shape for the respite in this genocide, for the return of the hostages, for the release of prisoners.'
A Metropolitan police spokesperson said: 'As part of our ongoing investigation into alleged breaches of Public Order Act conditions on Saturday, January 18, we have invited a further eight people to be interviewed under caution at a police station.
'While we are aware of names being attributed to those who have been invited for interview, we do not confirm the identity of anyone under investigation.'

West Lothian Film Festival announces partnership with breast cancer support charity based in Bathgate

Breast Friends and Family emerged as the winner from 30 nominated organisations West Lothian Film Festival has confirmed that its first official charity partner is Breast Friends and Family. The announcement follows more than five months of public voting and 2,164 individual ballots cast, and the partnership will run for the next three years. ‌ Nominations opened in October last year and the public were invited to nominate and vote via social media for local causes they felt deserved recognition and support. ‌ There were 30 organisations in the running, with Breast Friends and Family emerging as the winner after securing more than 700 public votes. Breast Friends and Family aims to support patients through a breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Based on Glasgow Road in Bathgate they provide practical, emotional, and peer support for breast cancer patients across West Lothian. From its office, affectionately known as The Heart, the charity distributes treatment support bags, runs wellbeing sessions, and offers a vital sense of solidarity to those facing diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. West Lothian Film Festival has attracted 306 films — an unprecedented increase from last year's 82 submissions. All submissions are currently in the hands of the 20 strong volunteer judging panel. Festival Director Christopher McPhillips said: 'Every nominated charity had something meaningful to offer West Lothian, and we're grateful to have celebrated them all over the past five months. With 747 votes, Breast Friends and Family clearly resonated with our community, representing compassion, strength, and unity. ‌ 'The people of West Lothian chose them as their charity of choice, and we're proud to use our platform to support and celebrate the incredible work they do. While it's been an honour to spotlight 30 brilliant organisations, we're equally proud to now walk alongside Breast Friends and Family as our official partner for the next three years.' As part of the three-year charity partnership, the festival has committed to: full marketing and promotional support, volunteer days from the festival team, and a dedicated Breast Friends and Family showcase day at each edition of the festival from 2026 to 2028. Hazel Orr of Breast Friends and Family said: 'We were delighted to be nominated. The 30 nominated charities are all worthy charities and community groups, so we knew we faced some strong competition. ‌ 'On first meeting Christopher, we realised that this could be a fantastic opportunity for Breast Friends and Family, with so many ways he could help promote our charity through the film festival as well as his business associates and connections. It made us think about how we connect with our followers through social media, through our own Facebook and Instagram platforms and how we could encourage our followers to like, vote and share posts. 'We grabbed the opportunity offered by the film festival and Condor Entertainment, to go along on one of their media days, to record an interview about how the charity came about and what it provides. ‌ "We loved sharing the finished result. And, we took advantage of the leaflets and posters provided by Artos Digital and Clear Colour, not just taking them to our events but sharing with work colleagues, neighbours, family and friends, at every opportunity. 'Thank you, Christopher, and the West Lothian Film Festival for this fabulous opportunity, thank you to the 2000+ people who voted and to those who voted for Breast Friends and Family. There's also an online fundraiser been set up by the film festival for Breast Friends and Family:

The Clarkson's Farm star , 26, took to Instagram to share that he had to go to the hospital for a scan after hurting his foot after playing a game of football on Tuesday evening. Kaleb said he was in a lot of pain as he shared a video of his swollen ankle as he hobbled around his farm before heading to hospital for an X-ray the next morning. ‌ He then took to his Instagram story to reassure fans that he would still be going to the Three Counties Show at the weekend. He said, "I may be hobbling around as I've fractured my ankle, but I'll still be at the 3 Counties Show on the Sunday. I'll be doing talks throughout the day, and Hawkestone Cider will be there. So, do pop along and say hello. I'll be there - don't you worry! I'm looking forward to it." ‌ The news comes just days after the fourth season of Clarkson's Farm dropped on Prime Video. A fifth series is already in the works, but Jeremy admitted that the show might go on a break after then The fomer Top Gear presenter told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Whatever happens we'll definitely take a short break as the crews are all worn out. We've been filming here two or three days a week, every week, for five years. Everybody could do with a rest." Clarkson's Farm has proved to be a big hit since it first aired in 2021, with Kaleb soaring to fame as one of the main figures on the show. As a result, he recently embarked on a UK tour and has written a book. Whilst Kaleb was away on his live speaking tour, Jeremy was assisted by glamorous new farmhand Harriet Cowan. Clarkson then dismissed claims that Kaleb had been "replaced" on Clarkson's Farm. ‌ The 65-year-old presenter continued: "What happened is this, he went away on his speaking tour, for a couple of months because he imagined that after four years, I'd be able to manage on my own. I didn't – I made a complete mess of everything and had to bring in a young girl called Harriet. Harriet is brilliant and looked after the fort until he got back. That is it – that's the story!" Ever since former Top Gear star Jeremy, decamped to Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds, fans have been gripped by the trials and troubles the star has faced as he tried to earn a profit from his farm which is all documented in his hit series. He is aided by farm hand Kaleb, 26 - who often proves he is more informed on farming practices than his motor head boss.
