61 illegal immigrants nabbed in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Immigration Department detained 61 undocumented migrants, including 20 women, during Ops Kutip operations at two separate locations yesterday.
State Immigration director Nur Zulfa Ibrahim said the operation was conducted on the second floor of the Komtar complex here and the first floor of the Penang Sentral Bus Terminal in Butterworth.
'A total of 226 foreigners were inspected during the operation, and we arrested 41 men and 20 women, aged 20 to 50, for various offences under the Immigration Act.
'Those arrested included 35 men and 13 women from Myanmar, seven Indonesian women, five Bangladeshi men, and one Pakistani man,' she said when contacted by Bernama today.
She added that the operation would continue periodically as part of efforts to combat the presence of iullegal immigrants in Penang.

His body was found on Wednesday at a partially-opened apartment block in Bangsar. Firefighters were called in to remove the remains. Police launched a large-scale search on Wednesday at the apartment block in Bangsar, focusing their search on areas still under construction. Around 30 policemen were deployed to conduct the search, along with the building's contractors, leading to the discovery on Wednesday afternoon. The search was focused there after police traced Johnson-Doyle's last known whereabouts. It is estimated that the distance between the pub, where he was last seen, and the apartment block is around 650m. Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood previously said that police received a report on Johnson-Doyle's disappearance on June 2.

Malaysian senior citizen killed in road accident in Narathiwat, Thailand
NARATHIWAT (Thailand): (Bernama) A Malaysian senior citizen died after the vehicle he was driving skidded into a ditch in an accident along the Narathiwat-Pattani Highway near Yi Ngo District in Thailand's southern province on Thursday (June 5) afternoon. Yi Ngo District Police Chief, Naravi Binwaearong, said his department received a report of the accident at 3pm local time. "Police officers who arrived at the scene found that the victim had been taken to Yi Ngo Hospital and was confirmed dead a few hours after the accident,' he said when contacted today (Thursday). He said the victim, aged 68, was from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, and had been driving alone at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigations found that the accident was caused by a burst tyre on the four-wheel drive vehicle the victim was driving. Zairil Withdraws Defamation Suit After Activists Retract Unfounded Allegations
GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari today withdrew his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution, following their retraction of allegedly defamatory remarks made during the 2023 Penang State Election. Zairil confirmed the withdrawal at the Penang Sessions Court, stating that all parties acknowledged the allegations were unfounded. 'The case has reached its conclusion at the Penang Sessions Court today. Both defendants have retracted their statements and expressed sincere regret over the matter. 'As a result, I have agreed to withdraw my suit against them. May this serve as a lesson to always verify your facts before making unfounded allegations and irresponsible claims,' Zairil said in a statement posted on Facebook. In a joint statement, Ravinder and Khoo acknowledged that their allegations were unfounded and expressed regret for any embarrassment, inconvenience, or reputational harm caused to Zairil as a result of their statements and any ensuing misunderstandings. 'The parties are unanimously of the opinion that bringing the matter to a close is in the best interest of all concerned. Khoo and Ravinder have removed the recording from their respective social media accounts and further undertake not to republish the same,' the statement read. According to the statement, on Aug 5, 2023, a recording was uploaded by Khoo on her X account, depicting an interaction between herself and Ravinder during a civil protest against the Penang South Reclamation project. The same recording was subsequently shared on Ravinder's Facebook page on Aug 22, 2023. The recording referenced Zairil's role as a member of the Penang government and alleged that a familial connection influenced the appointment of the project delivery partner for the reclamation project.
