Spelling Bee champion Faizan Zaki's grandmother watches event live from Khammam, India
His win not only brought pride to Allen, Texas, where he currently lives, but also sparked celebrations in Khammam and Hyderabad, the two cities that shaped his family's roots.
Although Faizan was born and raised in the US, his ties to Telangana run deep. His paternal hometown is Khammam, where his grandmother — now 83 — still lives. His mother, Dr Arshia Quadri, hails from Hyderabad and is an alumna of Gandhi Medical College.
'Faizan has visited Khammam and Hyderabad several times, the last being in July 2023,' said his father, Anwar Zaki, who has been living in the US since 1997. 'This year, we skipped the trip because of the intense preparation for the competition, but we plan to visit again soon.'
Faizan's uncle, Javeed Anwar, who is settled in Dubai, shared how the whole family back in India, Dubai, and the US were glued to the TV for three days.

It's not just spelling—it's about understanding roots, origins, pronunciation rules, and exceptions,' his father added.
This methodical and high-pressure regimen meant that trips to Hyderabad and Khammam have been few and far between in recent years. 'It's been hard not to visit family, because the commitment this competition demands is huge. Hopefully, now that it's done, we can spend more time in India,' his father said.

Gurgaon: Several CBSE-affiliated schools, led by the Haryana Progressive Schools' Conference (HPSC), have requested the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to reconsider its decision to make the APAAR ID mandatory for student registration and the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) for the 2025–26 academic session. The appeal comes in response to CBSE's circular dated July 30, 2025, which outlines the requirement of APAAR IDs as part of the data submission process for students appearing in Class X and XII board examinations. Schools argue that the directive, though well-intentioned, is currently unfeasible due to a host of administrative and technical issues. According to CBSE's circular, the Board will conduct three rounds of examinations in 2026—main exams for Classes X and XII in Feb/March, a second examination for Class X in May, and supplementary exams for Class XII in July. Careless crossing and poor visibility, railway tracks in Ernakulam turn death traps
Kochi: Railway tracks in Ernakulam are becoming death traps as people throw caution to the wind. As many as 38 people died on railway tracks between Kalamassery and Cherthala this year so far, according to data collected by railway authorities. Of these, 24 died within the city limits, between Kalamassery and Ernakulam North stretch. Among these, eight deaths were reported in the Kalamassery area itself. According to railway officials, several factors contribute to this. These include high curvature of tracks, people crossing tracks while speaking over phones, bushes growing on both sides of tracks making the arrival of trains unobservable to pedestrians and suicide attempts. There have also been incidents where passengers sitting on footboards or standing near train doors accidentally fell onto railway tracks resulting in deaths. "One of the main causes of the high run-over rate in the city is people crossing tracks while using mobile phones. Identifying the exact reasons for such incidents is often challenging, as bodies are mostly found in bad condition and there are no witnesses. The officials also noticed that many consume alcohol and use narcotic substances behind the overgrown bushes and cross tracks carelessly, leading to accidents.
