Spelling Bee champion Faizan Zaki's grandmother watches event live from Khammam, India
His win not only brought pride to Allen, Texas, where he currently lives, but also sparked celebrations in Khammam and Hyderabad, the two cities that shaped his family's roots.
Although Faizan was born and raised in the US, his ties to Telangana run deep. His paternal hometown is Khammam, where his grandmother — now 83 — still lives. His mother, Dr Arshia Quadri, hails from Hyderabad and is an alumna of Gandhi Medical College.
'Faizan has visited Khammam and Hyderabad several times, the last being in July 2023,' said his father, Anwar Zaki, who has been living in the US since 1997. 'This year, we skipped the trip because of the intense preparation for the competition, but we plan to visit again soon.'
Faizan's uncle, Javeed Anwar, who is settled in Dubai, shared how the whole family back in India, Dubai, and the US were glued to the TV for three days.

'My 83-year-old mother watched the event live from Khammam. It's a proud moment for all of us,' he shared.
Faizan's win at the Scripps Bee, held in Oxon Hill, Maryland, came after years of persistent effort. He finished as runner-up last year—a rare feat in itself. What sets Faizan apart is the fact that this was his seventh consecutive year participating in the Bee, having started as a toddler at the age of two, when most kids are just learning to pronounce basic words.
'On school days, Faizan dedicated at least four hours each day to prep, while weekends saw his routine stretch beyond eight hours. The grind involved extensive work with coaches, diagnostic sessions to identify tricky word patterns, and exhaustive sessions revising obscure words. It's not just spelling—it's about understanding roots, origins, pronunciation rules, and exceptions,' his father added.
This methodical and high-pressure regimen meant that trips to Hyderabad and Khammam have been few and far between in recent years. 'It's been hard not to visit family, because the commitment this competition demands is huge. Hopefully, now that it's done, we can spend more time in India,' his father said.

Reconsider APAAR ID mandate, facing glitches, say schools
Gurgaon: Several CBSE-affiliated schools, led by the Haryana Progressive Schools' Conference (HPSC), have requested the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to reconsider its decision to make the APAAR ID mandatory for student registration and the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) for the 2025–26 academic session. The appeal comes in response to CBSE's circular dated July 30, 2025, which outlines the requirement of APAAR IDs as part of the data submission process for students appearing in Class X and XII board examinations. Schools argue that the directive, though well-intentioned, is currently unfeasible due to a host of administrative and technical issues. According to CBSE's circular, the Board will conduct three rounds of examinations in 2026—main exams for Classes X and XII in Feb/March, a second examination for Class X in May, and supplementary exams for Class XII in July. Schools are required to submit accurate personal and academic data of all students, along with their APAAR IDs. However, school heads and education bodies have raised serious concerns regarding the mandatory requirement of the APAAR ID, citing data mismatches and procedural delays. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo HPSC president Suresh Chander highlighted that nearly 10% of students are facing Aadhaar data mismatches involving name, date of birth, or address, which prevents successful APAAR generation. Aadhaar corrections typically require supporting municipal documents such as birth certificates, which can take over a month to procure. Once submitted, Aadhaar centres are reportedly taking 3 to 4 months to process corrections due to a heavy backlog, putting students and parents in a difficult position with tight registration timelines. Moreover, the process is complicated by the interlinked nature of multiple govt records. A small error in any document can bring the entire registration process to a halt, leaving students unable to register within CBSE's deadlines. Careless crossing and poor visibility, railway tracks in Ernakulam turn death traps
Kochi: Railway tracks in Ernakulam are becoming death traps as people throw caution to the wind. As many as 38 people died on railway tracks between Kalamassery and Cherthala this year so far, according to data collected by railway authorities. Of these, 24 died within the city limits, between Kalamassery and Ernakulam North stretch. Among these, eight deaths were reported in the Kalamassery area itself. According to railway officials, several factors contribute to this. These include high curvature of tracks, people crossing tracks while speaking over phones, bushes growing on both sides of tracks making the arrival of trains unobservable to pedestrians and suicide attempts. There have also been incidents where passengers sitting on footboards or standing near train doors accidentally fell onto railway tracks resulting in deaths. "One of the main causes of the high run-over rate in the city is people crossing tracks while using mobile phones. Identifying the exact reasons for such incidents is often challenging, as bodies are mostly found in bad condition and there are no witnesses. The curvature of the tracks further exacerbates the problem, preventing people from seeing approaching trains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Additionally, in many stretches, there is insufficient space for people to stand safely when they notice an approaching train," said an official with the railway protection force in Ernakulam. Even applying the emergency brake to avoid hitting a person on the track is often unsuccessful as the train stops 200-250m ahead of the intended spot. Such incidents often give sleepless nights to the loco pilots who witness the incidents. "What we now notice is that several people, especially migrant workers, cross the tracks while speaking over the phone or using headsets. In such situations they fail to hear the horns. There are numerous curves in the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. These curves often have limited visibility, reducing the reaction time for loco pilots as our attention will be on signals and tracks. Additionally, some individuals mistakenly believe that standing on the narrow space near the track is safe. Others opt to take selfies or reels on the small gap as trains approach, leading to accidents," said a loco pilot, who recently approached RPF after a young woman ran towards a moving train near Aluva railway station, under the influence of narcotic substances. A senior loco pilot said migrant workers, who live in crowded places, prefer to stroll near the tracks and sit on them, making them vulnerable to accidents. The officials also noticed that many consume alcohol and use narcotic substances behind the overgrown bushes and cross tracks carelessly, leading to accidents.
