Oscar-winning period romance with unrecognisable A-lister streaming for free

Daily Mirror4 days ago
A must-watch romantic comedy has just landed on BBC iPlayer.
An Academy Award-winning period drama starring an unrecognisable A-lister is now streaming for free.

BBC iPlayer has just added Shakespeare in Love to its library, ready for theatre and romcom lovers to devour.

Released in 1998, the star-studded film features Oscar winners Gwyneth Paltrow, Colin Firth and Ben Affleck. It also stars Dame Judi Dench in a role that almost completely disguises the acclaimed actress.

For those who missed the hit romantic drama, it follows young playwright William Shakespeare (played by Joseph Fiennes) as he is battling writer's block.
While looking for a new muse, William meets his ideal woman, Viola (Paltrow), and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet.

Dame Dench plays Queen Elizabeth I, donning the hair, makeup and 16th century garments to fit the royal part. Despite being on screen for around eight minutes, Dench's performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The drama's accolades didn't stop there, as Shakespeare in Love also took home the Best Picture prize, alongside the Best Costume; Best Original Music; Best Screenplay, and Best Art Direction awards. Paltrow also bagged the Best Leading Actress gong, which remains her only Oscar win to date.
Directed by John Madden, the period drama has an impressive 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. The critics' consensus reads: "Endlessly witty, visually rapturous, and sweetly romantic, Shakespeare in Love is a delightful romantic comedy that succeeds on nearly every level."

Casual moviegoers similarly rave about the nineties hit, with one viewer writing: "Incredibly heart-warming and wildly entertaining, this movie has something for everybody, and it is so much fun to watch. I definitely recommend it for romance and comedy fans!"
A second said: "I absolutely love this movie, it's a timeless classic and an absolute must see. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll fall in love with the characters.
"It's quoted almost daily in my household, and rightfully so! If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend this movie!"
Meanwhile, a third penned: "Simply put, this is a fun film that never lacks for comedy. Everyone in this film portrays their parts with elegance. And as if to top the entire film off, Dame Judi Dench plays a rather fantastically entertaining Queen Elizabeth I."

Hollywood icon says 'it's happening' as she confirms reboot for 'one of the greatest shows ever'

Hollywood legend Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about the anticipated Murder, She Wrote reboot A Hollywood icon said, "It's happening", as she confirmed a reboot for "one of the greatest shows ever". ‌ A Murder, She Wrote movie was confirmed back in September 2023, with Orange Is the New Black duo Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum on writing duties. ‌ The pair, who worked as staff writers on season five of the hit US comedy-drama, are also on board to executive produce the film, which has been commissioned by Universal Pictures. Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal are producers. ‌ A year later, it was reported that Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis was in early talks to play lead character Jessica Fletcher, who was famously brought to life by Angela Lansbury in the original series. Speaking at the Freakier Friday premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday (July 22), Jamie confirmed that the film reboot "is happening" and that she's "very excited". ‌ "Oh, it's... happening. We're a minute away, but yeah, very excited. Very excited. But I'm tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting," she told Entertainment Tonight. The original Murder, She Wrote series ran for 12 seasons, as well as four TV movies, between 1984 and 1996. ‌ It followed Jessica Fletcher, a mystery writer and amateur detective who helped solve murders in her fictional town of Cabot Cove and other locations. As well as Angela Lansbury, the series also starred Tom Bosley, William Windom, Ron Masak, Will Nye and Louis Herthum. ‌ Angela won four Golden Globes out of ten nominations for her portrayal of Jessica, earning her the record for the most Golden Globe nominations and wins in the Best Actress in a Television Drama Series category. She also achieved the most Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, with the show also bagging two major wins at the prestigious event. ‌ Murder, She Wrote was a ratings hit during its broadcast, becoming a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule for almost a decade, making it one of the most successful and longest-running TV shows in history. Fans instantly fell in love with the show, with many continuing to share their praise on social media today. "Murder, She Wrote is one of the greatest shows ever," one person wrote on IMDb, with another adding: "This cherished television series will forever be dearly missed, but Jessica will forever live on." Jason Sudeikis films Ted Lasso with Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple in Kansas City

On Monday, production kicked off on the highly anticipated next installment of Ted Lasso, which is being filmed in none other than Kansas City - star Jason Sudeikis 's real-life hometown. In images, obtained by several of the show's fan-favorite cast members, including Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, and Jeremy Swift, were all seen reprising their iconic roles on location at a sunny soccer field. The stateside pivot marks the first time Ted Lasso has filmed in the U.S. after three Emmy-winning seasons set across the pond. Additional scenes are still expected to shoot in London, where the fictional AFC Richmond made their unlikely rise. While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, Sudeikis was seen in his character's signature mustache and sweater combo. Temple rocked a tied-up yellow shirt with a soccer ball on it, black studded miniskirt and 'KC' baseball cap. Waddingham also opted for a casual ensemble, which consisted of a navy 'Kansas City' tee and pants. The cast's sighting comes after Apple TV's head of development, Matt Cherniss, told Deadline he has 'high hopes for season four of Ted Lasso.' He said in July: 'I have high hopes for season four of Ted Lasso, we're just getting down that road. I don't know what more can be said about Ted Lasso that hasn't already been said, and we're so excited that it's coming back. 'I don't think I want to say anything about the direction that the show is going, only that I think if you love Ted Lasso you're gonna love the next season.' Four months earlier, Sudeikis confirmed there will be a season four of Ted Lasso while appearing on Travis and Jason Kelce's New Heights. The actor teased: 'Ted's coaching a women's team, so there, that's it.' Lasso, the American football-turned soccer coach played by Sudeikis, had coached fictional Premier League side AFC Richmond in the first three seasons of the show. In response to Sudeikis' revelation for season 4, Travis asked if that meant Lasso would be returning to his native US. Sudeikis playfully replied: 'That's too many questions,' before noting he didn't actually know the answer himself. Sudeikis added that coming up with a new season was both 'exciting' and 'daunting.' He said: 'Because we told the story we wanted to tell, but there's more there and it is a neat group of people to work with.' The former SNL star, 49, noted that 'the universe kept just saying things' after Hollywood emerged from the actors' and writers' strike in 2023. '... Whether [it was kind folks at airports, or on the internet, or friends of my folks or just other people in the industry... and I was just like, 'Ok, I hear you.'' The series' co-creator, Bill Lawrence, gave life to a possible fourth season of the show in August, when he suggested the decision ultimately came down to Sudeikis. He told Collider: 'As fans, we'd all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we're all down with it.' The show's return comes after earning 20 Primetime Emmy Awards in its first season, and winning seven including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis. Players: Once again, the fortunes of a soccer team appear to be central to the show's plotline Since premiering in 2020, the series has received 61 Primetime Emmy Awards nods. It's also received a Producers Guild of America Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Writers Guild of America Awards, as well as nominations for five Directors Guild of America Awards. It has received two Golden Globe Awards, seven Critics' Choice Television Awards, and three TCA Awards. At this time, no release date for Season 4 of Ted Lasso has been revealed.
